McCormick on Heaps

Level 14 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante

Three players saw a turn that made the board {4-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{a-Spades}{9-Spades}. The big blind bet 7,000 and both Austin McCormick on the button and Blake Jakel in the small blind stuck around for a {q-Clubs} river. Action checked toe McCormick and he bet 40,000. Jakel quickly mucked but the big blind called and flipped over {j-}{7-}.

McCormick could beat that with {10-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} for a straight.

Apter Value Owns Self

Level 14 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante

The {5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{3-Clubs} flop checked around three ways for a {9-Clubs} turn. Brett Apter bet 6,000 from the small blind and Kelly Wolfe called from early position. Apter bet 14,000 on the {7-Spades} river and Wolfe quickly called.

Apter showed {j-Spades}{9-Spades} for top pair but was outkicked by {k-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}.

Pierce Short Then Busto

Level 14 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante

Down to his last 10,000, John Pierce stuck it in from the big blind with {j-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} but was dominated by the {k-Diamonds}{j-Spades} of Jorden Helstern. The {8-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{q-Spades}{10-Clubs} didn't do anything for Pierce and he headed for the rail.

Just a few more players busting out would force a redraw, well in advance of the scheduled end of play.

Battle of Leaders Goes to Levin

Level 14 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Matthew Levin
Matthew Levin

Craig Welko checked in middle position and Matthew Levin bet 17,000, about half pot, from the hijack on {10-Spades}{2-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}. Welko called, bringing a {k-Diamonds}. Both players checked and Welko opened {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}. Levin had it beat with {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}.

PokerNews is in town to live report the $1,700 Main Event here at the World Series of Poker Circuit Ameristar St. Charles, but that is just on gold ring event that will have played out by the end of the series.

In Event #5: $400 Pot-Limit Omaha, 85 runners created a $28,050 prize pool. The top 13 got paid and among those to cash but fall short of the final table were Maurice Hawkins (10th - $658), Allen Kessler (11th - $658), Shawn Quinn (12th - $658), and Cory Bogert (13th - $630).

In the end, 44-year-old Jason Simon beat Jermaine Coleman in heads-up play to win the title for $8,563 and his first gold ring.

“I play Big-O cash games here almost every day,” he said after the win.

Day 2 only lasted a little over three hours and stacks were relatively close throughout. Simon was only a slight favorite when he reached heads up with Coleman. It was a cooler finish for Coleman though when both players flopped trip kings and after getting all of the chips in the middle Simon held up with his bigger kicker.

Welko Wakes Up

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante

Austin McCormick opened under the gun and a player in the cutoff shoved all in for 69,000. Craig Welko called in the big blind and McCormick folded.

Welko: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Opponent: {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}

The {6-Spades}{10-Clubs}{4-Hearts} board had the cutoff raising out of his seat but he paused at seeing the {7-Spades} turn as he picked up a straight draw. The river was a {9-Spades}, just missing him.

Apter Finds a Huge River Double

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante

Brett Apter raised to 8,000 in the small blind and Don Carlton made it 23,000 in the big. Apter shoved all in for 78,500 and Carlton was in there with a quick call.

Carlton: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Apter: {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

The {k-Spades}{6-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} board left Carlton dodging a heap of rivers, and the {q-Spades} paired Apter for a double.

Dub for Davenport

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante

A player in middle position shoved for 26,000 effective, almost double the pot, on {k-Clubs}{6-Spades}{j-Clubs}. David Davenport shook his head but shrugged and called it off from the cutoff with {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}. He was leading against {q-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}.

The {8-Clubs} turn brought even more cards for Davenport to dodge but the river was a {6-Diamonds}.

Unpaired Hand Holds for Pierce

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante

A player in the cutoff was all in for 34,000 and called in two spots, by John Pierce on his left and Greg Wood on his right. The {7-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{7-Spades} board got checked down and Pierce revealed {a-Spades}{q-Spades}. That beat the {5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} of Wood and the {a-Hearts}{9-Clubs} of the all-in player.
