Fan Friendly Chris Ferguson

Despite his currently playing in a $5,000 buy-in poker tournament, Chris Ferguson just took a moment to sign a couple of autographs for a spectator.

Though poker is not exactly an ideal spectator sport, one of the advantages of watching a live tournament is that fans are often afforded the opportunity to interact with some of the games biggest names.

Jonathan Little Eliminated

Jonathan Little
Jonathan Little
One of the first casualties of the day was young poker pro Jonathan Little, who was just eliminated from the tournament by Ken Churchill of Auburn, Washington.

Churchill limped into the pot from under-the-gun and when the action got around to Little, he made it 700 to go; Churchill was the lone caller. The flop came A-K-8 and Churchill check-called a 700 bet from Little.

The turn brought a queen, and again Churchill checked to Little who fired another 700 bet. Churchill then raised, making it 3,700 to go. Little responded with a re-raise of his own, and a big one at that, shoving his entire stack into the middle. Churchill made the call and turned over J-10 for the stone cold nuts; Little tabled K-Q for two pair.

Little failed to hit one of his four outs on the river and was consequently eliminated from the competition early in the second level. After the hand, Churchill told us "Now I've just got to pay attention and keep my nose clean," referring to the long grind that is Day 1.

Tough Table

Undoubtedly one of the toughest tables assembled here today is table 38, which currently features Kathy Liebert, Bill Edler and Kirk Morrison - all tremendous tournament poker players.

Edler and Liebert are both off to strong starts, each will a few thousand more chips than the 10,000 they started with. Morrison, on the other hand, has lost half of his starting stack and his currently sitting with 5,250 in chips.

The Field

We've just received word from the tournament staff that 142 total players entered today's main event.

Currently, 129 of those players remain, spread out across 15 tables according to the large projection screen TV set up in the middle of the poker room. The average chip stack is currently 11,007.

Schneider Doubles Up

On a board showing {6-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{8-Spades}{4-Spades}{6-Clubs}, Tom Schneider moved all in from the big blind and was quickly called by an opponent on the button.

Schneider turned over {6-Spades}{9-Spades} for trip sixes and his opponent, visibily distraught, tabled pocket queens, shouting "I knew it!"

Schneider stacked up right around 19,000 in chips after the hand.
