Overheard At The Gaming Life Expo

There are several players here at the Rio who aren't playing today, instead they're mingling and meeting fans at the Gaming Life Expo. Phil Laak and Phil Gordon are playing a headsup video game match in the booth adjacent to where Antonio Esfandiari and Layne Flack are signing authographs. One fan told Antonio, "Good luck in the main tomorrow, I hope you're not at my table." Layne Flack quickly replied under his breath, "We must have different standards... I hope he IS!"

Joe Hachem Wins A Big Pot

After a player in late position raised to 600 Hachem and the two players in the blinds chose to call. The flop came {6-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{10-Clubs} and Hachem called the original raiser's 800 bet. The blinds folded and the turn brought the {2-Diamonds}. Hachem called a 1,800 bet, and when the {A-Hearts} fell on the river his opponent bet 2,500. Hachem raised it to 5,000, his opponent called, and Hachem showed pocket Deuces for the full house.

Fischman Catches Trips, Gets Paid Off

Scott Fischman
Scott Fischman
Two players limped for 400, Scott Fischman raised to 2,100 from the cutoff, the first limper called and the second limper folded. The flop was {K-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}. The limper led for 2,000 and Fischman called. The turn was the {10-Spades}. The limper checked, Fischman bet 3,500 and the limper called. The river was the {9-Diamonds}. The limper checked and Fischman bet 12,000 without hesitation, leaving himself less than 2,000 behind. As Fischman's opponent thought over his decision, ESPN descended upon the table and stuck a boom mike and a camera in his face.

After a lengthy think, he called and showed {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}, but Fischman tabled {Q-Spades}{10-Clubs}, having caught trip tens on the turn. His opponent was eliminated on the hand.

Fischman is up to 35,000.

ESPN's Norm Chad was walking through the Amazon Ballroom, when one table stopped him. A couple of players suggested that he get better jokes. Then they told him a few and told him he could use them or a future broadcast.

John Juanda Eliminated

Darryl Ronconi raises, John Juanda reraises with a short stack, and Ronconi puts him all in for about 2,000 more. Juanda shows 9-9, but Ronconi has A-A. The board bricks out for Juanda, and he is eliminated from the Main Event.

Juanda had a good World Series this year, with five cashes, a final table, and $136,593 in winnings.

Mary Jones Wins a Big Pot

And it might've been even bigger. After a {10-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} flop Jones bet 1,500 from the small blind and the UTG player called. The player on the button then raised to 4,500 and Jones re-raised to 10,000 straight. The UTG folded and after thinking it over the player on the button also chose to surrender. After he flipped over his cards and showed Jones he was folding A-K she turned over her cards and showed A-J for the flopped straight.

Jen Mason Busts a Player

The small blind is all in for 2,500 with {A-Diamonds}{5-Spades} against Jen Mason in the big blind with {J-Hearts}{J-Spades}. The board comes {K-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}, and Mason's pocket jacks hold up to win the pot. The small blind is eliminated, and Mason increases her stack to about 29,500.

Gold's Prospects

Jamie Gold's mother - Jane Gold
Jamie Gold's mother - Jane Gold
We recently had the chance to speak with Jamie Gold, last year's winner of the World Series of Poker, who has been walking around the Amazon Room today (Jamie is scheduled to play Day 1d), following the progress of two special players.

The first, and most important, player that Jamie has been receiving constant updates on (in fact, she called him seconds before we spoke) is his mother, Jane Gold. This is her first WSOP Main Event, but Jamie says that he has been working with her for over a month, teaching her the game of Texas Hold 'Em and trying to pass on whatever wisdom he can. "She's great, she's doing really, really great," Jamie said of her play today. Jamie said that over the last month his mother has been playing in local tournaments back home, nothing with too large of a field, and not only has she been holding her own, but has also won one as well. After nearly four hours of play this afternoon, Jamie Gold's mother, Jane Gold, is up to 42,000.

The second player that Jamie is checking on throughout the day is Jimmy D. Jamie has been mentoring Jimmy for the last year, an interesting development for those that remember last year's WSOP Main Event, where Johnny Chan sweated Jamie from the rail, as Chan had been mentoring Jamie. This is Jimmy's second WSOP Main Event, he played in last year's and placed in the money. Currently, Jimmy D is up to 27,000.

Watch out poker players playing in this year's World Series Of Poker Main Event; Jamie Gold has returned and he's brought two strong prospects with him.

As an aside, Jamie just let us know some more good news: his mother has just been sponsored by www.texasholdem.com. "She's gotta be the first mom to be sponsored, she's gotta be!" Jamie was very emotional and very happy over the sponsorship news.
