A Legend in the Field

There are huge posters of former WSOP World Champions ringing the Amazon Room, but a bit of really bad luck prevented one of the game's greats from joining that illustrious group. Jay Heimowitz, who holds six World Series of Poker bracelets, is currently steering a short stack in today's Omaha Hi-Lo event.

When Stu Ungar won his first two World Championships in 1980 and 1981, Heimowitz made both final tables. And if it wasn't for one fateful hand, it might've been Heimowitz's picture up there as the 1981 champion. He held pocket Queens and was up against against Ungar's pocket Jacks. Both players had big stacks and the winner of that pot would have a dominant chip lead. But that year pocket Queens were a fateful hand that changed the fortunes of many players, and Ungar ended up with quad Jacks to eliminate Heimowitz on his way to his second title.

The previous year, Heimowitz finished third in the World Series Main Event--behind Ungar and Doyle Brunson. As Heimowitz modestly said, he had a "ringside seat to history." Although, with six bracelets, he's made a good bit of history himself. And short stack or no, one of the class acts of poker could make some more history over the next two days.

And Then, Jordan Morgan Goes For a Walk

After getting moved to a new table Morgan played a hand where he thought he had a flush draw. After calling the final bet on the river Morgan looked down at his cards...and realized he didn't have another heart in his hand for the flush. He mucked his cards, stood up, and left the table for over 10 hands.

But he just returned to his seat, and he's still our chipleader with 56,400

A Quick Turnaround

At 2:30 this morning it looked like Anoput Phimmasone would be able to sleep in today. He was nearly down to the felt with just 1,500. But he pushed and scooped, pushed and scooped, and by the time play ended a half-hour later he had a viable 9,000 stack. And in the 90 minutes or so since play resumed today he's nearly tripled his stack to 25,000.
