A Simmering Friday of Pot-Limit Hold'em

Friday is Pot-Limit Hold'em Day at the Rio, as Event #38, $2,000 PLHE, gets underway. It'll be a relatively quiet day at the Rio, in contrast to the big-field events this weekend.

Greg Hopkins won this event a year ago, topping a 599-player field to win $269,274; similar numbers should be here for the noon start today.

Small But Perfectly Formed

Good morning, and welcome back to the Amazon Room, slightly less seething today than it has been of late. So far we have a rather bijou field for today's event, a mere 462 runners registered so far, although that number should increase slightly before the break. In fact, the field is so compact today that the tables in the orange section were suddenly and unexpectedly closed a few minutes before players were admitted, and we are now confined to a single section of the room.

Bilney Busts Out

Within a few minutes of the legend, "Shuffle up and deal!" ringing across the floor, Sarah Bilney was spotted making an angry exit -- apparently her aces had fallen victim to pocket threes, which hit a gutshot on the turn when all the money went in.

Griffin Spikes a Ten

Rather luckier than Bilney has been Gavin Griffin. All in on a 7-6-7 flop with 7-10 against an opponent's 7-K, he actually had his coat on when he spiked a ten on the turn. The river was not a king, and he more or less doubles up.

Seats one to five on Table 47 must not be the most comfortable place to be right now -- the last four seats at the table are currently occupied by, in seat order, Jordan Morgan, Tony Phillips, Rolf Slotboom and Bill Chen.

This may not be the biggest field to grace the Amazon Room thus far, but it's still highly concentrated in pros, the likes of Humberto Brenes, Jeff Lisandro, Thomas Wahlroos, John Hennigan and Vanessa Rousso all making their presence felt.

I also spotted a few fellow countrymen (and women) upon my travels, Paul Jackson, Chris Moorman, Paul Foltyn, Nick Gibson, Live Boeree and recent Irish Open champion Neil Channing among those looking to take bracelet gold.
