Another day, another $1,500

Lotsa chips - at the ready
Lotsa chips - at the ready
The big field events seem to be multiplying as we enter the 'dog days' of the WSOP. Today's offering, a $1,500 No Limit Hold Em event is sure to have a massive field, especially considering the Saturday start will attract the more traditionally employed. Join us here today at noon as we ask the question - Just who are these people??

The "Journey" Begins In Just Over 20 Minutes

With about 22 minutes remaining on the tournament clocks, the dealers and floor staff are making their final preparations. The 1979 classic "Any Way You Want It" by Journey is being played over the Amazon Room P.A.

The players have just been let in and as Tournament Director Jack Effel just announced, "It's going to be another great day at the World Series of Poker."

The board shows a total of 2,422 entrants (and climbing) currently registered for today's event, so stay with us as the action promises to be fast and furious.

Pump Up the Volume

It happens in every $1,500 NLHE tournament, almost like clockwork. The first five minutes of play are marked by a silence unusual to the Amazon Room. Many of these players today are playing in their first WSOP event, playing above their bankrolls, playing in a rare live setting rather than hiding behind their computer screens. Their nerves are palpable. However, as the tension of the first few hands melts away and people begin to relax, it's as if someone turned up the volume knob on a stereo system. People start talking. A few chuckles escape into the air.

And, of course the cry we'll hear every few seconds for the next several hours-- "Seat Open!"

Who's Here?

In today's amateur-heavy field thus far we've spotted pros Kevin "BeL0WaB0Ve" Saul, Jonathan Little, Eric "Rizen" Lynch, Jordan Morgan, Alex Jacob, C.K. Hua, Burt Boutin, Michael Guzzardi, and John Juanda.

Ken Einiger Eliminated

Ken Einiger just joined the ever-growing list of day 1 casualties. He got it all in before the flop holding {A-Spades} {7-Spades} against the {A-Clubs} {K-Clubs} of his opponent. Things went from bad to worse for Einiger when the flop came {Q-Clubs} {8-Clubs} {4-Clubs} leaving him drawing dead.

An Odd One, Starring John Juanda

The UTG player opened for 150, an EP player called, John Juanda reraised to 550 from the cutoff, the UTG player put in a third raise to 1,000, the EP player folded and Juanda called.

The flop was {K-Hearts} {J-Clubs} {10-Diamonds}. The UTG player bet 500 and Juanda called. The turn was the {J-Hearts}. UTG bet 500 again and Juanda called again. The river was the {8-Spades}. UTG bet 1,000 and Juanda folded.

After getting an early double-up prior to this hand, Juanda is now back down to 4,300.

Sabyl Landrum Doubles Up

On a board of {8-Hearts} {8-Clubs} {6-Clubs}, Sabyl Landrum was all in against a single opponent. The players showed:

Landrum: {J-?} {J-?}
Opponent: {7-Clubs} {9-Clubs}

The turn and river came a {K-?} and {6-?} respectively and Landrum doubled to just over 5,500.

Carlos Mortensen Eliminated

A middle-position raiser made it 150 to play. Action folded to a late-position player who raised to 750. Carlos Mortensen moved all in from the big blind for 2,025. The initial raiser passed but the late-position player made the call. The players showed:

Mortensen: {7-Diamonds} {7-Clubs}
Opponent: {J-Spades} {J-Clubs}

"The Matador" got no help from the {Q-Spades} {9-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {6-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} board and was eliminated.
