Sunday Triple Draw Lowball at the Rio

Deuce-to-seven triple-draw lowball returns to the Rio on Sunday when Event 40, $2,500 Triple Draw Lowball, begins play at noon. It's the "Kansas City" version of the game where the worst hand wins, and in this game the worst of the worst -- a hand otherwise known as "Number One" -- is 2-3-4-5-7. Aces count as high and straights and flushes are bad news.

This $2,500 event replaces last year's unusual $1,000-with-rebuys tourney in this poker variant, which drew 546 entrants and saw Rafi Amit win the bracelet and $227,005.

Pump It Up

Once in a Lifetime by The Talking Heads is blaring out of the PA system in the Amazon Room, which must mean it's time to open the doors and let the players take their seats. We'll be in the Blue section of the Amazon Room today, and judging by the fact that only 30 six-handed tables are in use, a large field is not expected.

A Few Rules to Note

Some of the more esoteric rules of triple draw differ from location to location. Tournament Director Jack Effel has given us two notable variations that are in effect today:

* If you want to draw five cards, you can get them consecutively. You do not have to draw four, wait for the draw to go all the way around, and then draw the fifth.

* Discards will immediately be killed and placed in the dead wood. Those cards will be shuffled back into the deck if needed. However, burn cards will stay down on the table for the duration of the hand.

Kansas City Lowball Bringin' 'em Out

Daniel Morgan, Raymond Davis, Terrence Chan, Robert Mizrachi, James Van Alstyne, John Juanda, and Mike "the Mad Professor" Caro are all here.

So are Jeff Lisandro, Billy Baxter, Sam Grizzle, Thor Hansen, Woody Deck, Steve Wong, John D'Agostino, Mike Wattel, Amnon Filippi, Greg Mueller, and Tom Schneider.

C'mon Dealer

A player just picked up 7-5-4-3-2 after the first draw. Not bad, except all were spades.

He discarded the 7 and drew one card. Got a 6. Ouch. Straights, like flushes, count against you here.

He tried again, picked up a second 5, and lost to a Q.

A Few More Familiar Faces

A few players have been slow to take their seats, but the field is starting to fill out. Chip Jett, Gavin Griffin, Daniel Negreanu, Nikolay Evdakov, David Chiu, Andy Bloch, Greg Raymer and Carlos Mortensen are all trying their hand at the insanity that is Deuce-to-Seven Triple Draw.

Flashing Prohibited; Prop Bets Encouraged

Stephen Pierce just asked how many times he can flash his discards before incurring a penalty. The floor, who witnessed his first flash, said, "This is your warning. We're very strict about exposed cards here. Next time is a penalty." The floor then made an announcment over the P.A. system to the same effect: "Do not flash your discards. This is not live action. This is a tournament. Even if it's heads up, do not flash your discards."

Meanwhile, Ray Davis and Gavin Griffin are seated on adjacent tables and are trying to figure out how to change their tournament stacks into cash for purposes of a prop bet. "This is boring," said Griffin. "We need a bet to liven things up."
