Ferguson's Jacks No Good

Chris Ferguson is known for being a laidback, friendly guy. He's engaging in light banter with some of his table mates. One player suggested that the limit events at the World Series should start at Level 3, with short stacks and tall blinds, to turn the tournaments into a total craps shoot.

"That's the only way we could beat [Phil] Ivey," joked Ferguson. "If it was a craps shoot."

Shortly thereafter, Ferguson was in the small blind during a hand of hold'em and three-bet a late position raiser before the flop. That player called to a flop of {2-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {7-Spades}. Ferguson bet the flop, bet the turn {q-Clubs} then check-called a bet from his opponent on the river {Q-Hearts}. We never got to see Ferguson's hand; he mucked upon being shown {J-Clubs} {J-Spades}.

Check-Call Doesn't Work for Smith

A lot of the tables have rolled over to hold'em now, so we're getting a little more action as it's a game most players are most comfortable with. Gavin Smith was in the big blind for a recent hold'em hand and three-bet a player who opened from middle position. That player four-bet and Smith called.

The board came out {8-Clubs} {3-Spades} {9-Clubs} {3-?} {5-Hearts} with Smith check-calling on every street. At showdown, his opponent turned over {Q-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds}. Smith mucked.

Tough Start for Lisandro

Hold'em:

Jeff Lisandro is down to 2,800 in chips after being counterfeited in a hold'em pot. His early position raise was called only by the small blind, giving Lisandro position for the rest of the hand. His opponent check-called a bet on a flop of {A-Hearts} {K-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} and check-called again on the {4-Spades} turn.

When the river fell {4-Hearts}, both players checked. Lisandro turned over two pir, {K-Clubs} {Q-Clubs}, but he lost to his opponent's naked ace, {A-Spades} {2-Spades}, which made aces up using the board pair of fours.

Setback for Daniel

Omaha Hi-Lo:

"I didn't want to hit that queen," said Daniel Negreanu. He was at the river against a single opponent. The board was {4-Hearts} {K-Spades} {j-Diamonds} {q-Hearts} {7-Clubs}, with Negreanu betting the flop (he was called) and turn (he was raised). Negreanu called the turn raise, then check-folded to a bet on the river.

Negreanu flashed {Q-?} {Q-?} before folding. His opponent never opened his own four cards but later claimed to hold {9-?} {10-?} for a straight to the king.

Negreanu took the hit without much concern. He still has a very healthy 8,000 in chips.

Man Down

"Seat Open, 242!" We're not sure if that's the first elimination -- after all, there are 97 tables spread across two rooms -- but we haven't seen anyone else eliminated yet.

It helped that Table 242 is right in front of media row.

We All Can Use a Little Luck

Hold'em:

Phil Ivey already has two bracelets in the 2009 WSOP. But even he can stand some luck once in a while.

Ivey was the big blind and called a raise from a player in early position. Ivey called down all the way to the river where, with the board showing {Q-Diamonds} {10-Spades} {8-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} {J-Clubs}, he finally led out. His opponent called with {K-Hearts} {k-Spades}; that pair was no good against Ivey's queen-high straight, {A-Spades} {9-Spades}.

"You don't need luck too," said his opponent.

"Yes I do," replied Ivey. His stack is up to 5,200 after being blinded off for most of the first two levels.

A Couple of Hands of Stud

In the Amazon Room, Shannon Shorr scooped a 2,200-chip pot in the Stud Hi/Lo round with two pair, sevens and threes. He's up to almost 7,000 in chips.

Over in the Miranda Room, Ray Davis was all in against one opponent in Stud. Going into the river, Davis showed a pair of queens and a flush draw against his opponent's two pair, nines and fives.

"I bet I miss everything," said Davis. "Erick, I'll bet you $100 that I miss everything. You want to bet?"

Lindgren declined, and it was an excellent choice. Davis picked up a fifth club to go along with the four already in his hand to make a flush and take down the pot.

"You would have won, Erick!" said Davis with a laugh. "I guess I can't always miss everything."

Things That Drive People Insane

Razz:

"I remember when I worked for $100 a day and how much money it was," said Mike Matusow as Justin Bonomo was getting involved in a hand with two opponents. "And then when I gambled $80 of it away, how I wanted to commit suicide."

Bonomo may have wanted to commit suicide during the razz hand. He called a bet on fourth street showing x-x / 3-6 against x-x / 2-4 and x-x / 2-7. The player with 2-4 caught a seven on fifth street against a queen for the third player in the hand and a king for Bonomo. One bet was enough to win the pot at that point.

Matusow has about 3,500. Bonomo is on 2,700.

A Smattering of Pre-Dinner Chippies
