Dead Calm
It's a little bit eerie in here. At the moment, no one is playing poker in the Amazon Ballroom-- a rare sight indeed at the World Series of Poker. It's more than 30 minutes before the Day 3 restart of the $50,000 Players' Championship and the 38,000 square feet of this room is occupied only by a few dealers, a couple of floor supervisors, a hat trick of security guards, and a smattering of early-bird media. At 3 p.m., the 54 players who survived the first two days of play in this uber-elite event will gather around seven tables, spectators will flock to the rail, and the sound of clattering chips will rise like the volume being slowly raised on a stereo.
When the chips were bagged and tagged at around 2:30 this morning, Kirk Morrison held the chip lead with 741,000. He is closely trailed by 2006 $50K H.O.R.S.E. runner-up Andy Bloch and Mikael Thuritz with 697,500. Also still alive and kicking in this 8-game event are Chris Ferguson, John Juanda, Doyle Brunson, Scott Seiver, Phil Ivey, Erik Seidel, Cole South, and Daniel Alaei.
The plan is to play six 90-minute levels today. We might hit the money (at 16 players), we might not, although media row is setting the line around 20 players surviving Day 3.
Action will be underway in about half an hour. Stay tuned.
