Crazy Eights

Pocket eights saved Chino Rheem's tournament earlier. Now the've ended it. Rheem re-raised from late position to 2,000 after Craig McCorkell opened for 525. McCorkell responded by moving all in for about 8,000 total. Rheem called with {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} and found himself racing McCorkell's {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}. There was no help for Rheem this time as the board came {6-Spades}{j-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}. Rheem's gone.

Hamby Does It with Quads

After an early-position player limped into the pot pre-flop, Jared Hamby also limped. A player in middle position then raised all in for 1,900 total. The first limper folded, but Hamby called with {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}. It turned out he was up against {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. Hamby flopped quads, {3-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{9-Spades}, and would turn out to need them when the turn came {5-Diamonds} and river came {10-Diamonds} to give his opponent a full house. By collecting that pot Hamby moved to 7,200 in chips.

Outhred Ducks the Flush

We came to Alex Outhred's table to se him standing from his chair and saying, "Hold." Outhred was all in for 7,125 on a board of {5-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} with the nuts, {8-Clubs}{9-Hearts}. He was facing a dreaded flush draw, {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}. The board paired but did not flush, {7-Clubs} and {10-Clubs}. Outhred's straight did indeed hold up to give Outhred 16,000 in chips.

He's From Russia

We walked up to the table to see a board of {Q-Clubs} {4-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds} {10-Clubs} {Q-Hearts} spread out, and about 8,500 chips in the pot. Vanessa Rousso had checked, and Dmitry Motorov had moved all in for 8,000, enough to cover Rousso. She was in the tank when we spotted the hand in progress.

After a couple minutes of thinking it over, Rousso asked, "Where are you from?" but her opponent didn't respond. Finally, she tossed her last 5,000 into the pot to put herself at risk.

Motorov showed her {Q-Spades} {10-Spades} for the full-house-turned-quads. "Is that all?" Rousso asked, flinging her cards into the muck. "Did you know that I had jacks or no?" She stood up from the table and gathered her things.

Motorov finally spoke: "I'm from Russia," was the only thing he said, and Rousso headed for the rail.

Durrrr is a Fish Cake and Esfandiari is Out

Antonio Esfandiari was all in for his last 5,800 before the flop with {A-Spades} {Q-Spades}. Rodrigo Portaleone looked him up with {J-Diamonds} {J-Spades}, and The Magician seemed content to race for double or nothing in this spot.

He was, however, not so content with the board of {K-Diamonds} {J-Clubs} {5-Hearts} {6-Hearts} {A-Diamonds}. That gave Portaleone the winning set of jacks, moving him up to 17,000 and sending Esfandiari meandering toward the exit.

As he left, his table was chatting with Tom "durrrr" Dwan about an unusual bank robbery hypothetical he has been throwing around. This is the first we've heard of it as well, but it sounds like Esfandiari, durrrr, and Allen Cunningham are involved in an ongoing discussion about the likelihood the three of them could successfully rob a bank with one year to plan the heist.

"Durrrr thinks it's 87%!" Esfandiari yelled as he walked away. "What a fish cake!"

Spades Kind to Smith

Just before the break, Allen Cunningham opened for 500 pre-flop and was called by Dan Smith from the button. They both checked a flop of {2-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{q-Spades}. On the turn {6-Spades}, Cunningham bet 1,300 and Smith called. The river was a third spade, the {4-Spades}. Cunningham bet 3,000, then was faced with a tough decision when Smith moved all in for 9,500 total. Cunningham thought for quite some time, as player were starting to leave on break, before he called. Smith showed the nut flush, {a-Spades}{5-Spades}, and Cunningham mucked. Smith now has about 23,000 in chips.

Ferguson's Top Pair No Good

Chris Ferguson was in position for a heads-up flop of {a-Spades}{j-Hearts}{5-Clubs}. After his opponent checked, Ferguson took his usual deliberate time to also check. The turn was the {7-Spades} and brought a bet of 1,600 from Ferguson's opponent. Ferguson maintained his stoic visage before calling.

The river came {9-Hearts}. Ferguson's opponent checked, then called a bet of 2,100. Ferguson opened {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts} for top pair; it was most certainly no good against his opponent's flopped set of jacks, {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}. Ferguson is down to 8,000 as a result.
