Hearts Break Moneymaker's Ladies

Chris Moneymaker, who now has to contend with Phil Ivey on his right, made a lead of 1,100 on a flop of {q-Hearts}{5-Spades}{k-Hearts}. The button player was the only other opponent in the hand. That player raised all in for 5,000 total. Moneymaker quickly called with {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}, a set of queens, and found himself up against a naked flush draw, {a-Hearts}{2-Hearts}. The {4-Hearts} that hit the turn filled Moneymaker's opponent's flush, and the {10-Spades} river did not pair the board.

That hand pushed Moneymaker down to 17,000. A few hands later he rivered a small set, {8-Hearts}{9-Spades}{10-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}, after he and his opponent checked the turn. Moneymaker's 2,000-chip bet with {4-Clubs}{4-Spades} was quickly called by his opponent, who had flopped a set of tens with {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}.

Moneymaker still has 12,500 to work with.

Razor Bumped

David Cairns opened the pot with an early-position raise, and John Phan moved all in for 2,250. Cairns called, and over went the cards:

Cairns: {J-Diamonds} {J-Hearts}
Phan: {A-Clubs} {10-Hearts}

Board: {4-Clubs} {4-Spades} {K-Diamonds} {J-Spades} {2-Clubs}.

That's pretty useless for Phan, and he and his ace-ten have both been mucked. Cairns is up to 19,500 courtesy of that little knockout pot, but the better news is that he's rid himself and the rest of his table of "The Razor".

Dwan's Stack Shrinks

Tom Dwan was very interested in finding out which table Phil Ivey's at. That may be because things aren't going well for Dwan at his own table. He's down to 3,250 after tangling with Veronica Dabul. Dabul was in the big blind and called Dwan's pre-flop raise from the cutoff. She then checked to "durrrr", who bet 725 on a flop of {7-Spades}{3-Spades}{5-Hearts}. Dwan insta-mucked the moment that Dabul raised to 2,500.

Dabul is up to 25,500.

No Sweat for Hachem

Life is pretty good right now for former Main Event champion Joe Hachem. He was sitting in the cutoff in a recent hand and three-bet to 1,525 after a middle-position player opened for a raise. That player then four-bet to 3,8000. Hachem made the call to a flop of {7-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{k-Spades}. Hachem's opponent led out for another 3,800, then was faced with a big decision when Hachem raised all in for 11,300 total. The player thought through his decision for quite a while before finally calling with {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}. Hachem had that hand easily beat with {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}. The turn and river blanked out {9-Clubs} and {8-Clubs} to ship the double-up to Hachem. He's up to 33,500.

Maridu Meets Her End

Maria Mayrinck
Maria Mayrinck

"That was the cutest little pot ever."

That's what Maria "Maridu" Mayrinck said to us as she meandered toward the rail, so we had to get the rest of the details.

"Set of deuces," she said pointing at herself, "against a set of queens," with a point back towards her former table. "Well," she added, "he made quads on the river."

With a shrug, Maridu was gone.

Double Dip

Double dipping -- playing in two (or more!) tournaments at the same time -- has become very popular at the World Series of Poker the last few years. No surprise, then, that the seat next to Jordan Morgan is empty with a stack of 6,300 in front of it. A yellow sticky note on the table rail identifies the owner: John Juanda, who is currently playing in Day 2 of the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event.

Leibert Out

Andy Philachack opened to 725 from late position, and Kathy Liebert moved all in for about 2,000 total. She had pocket sixes, and she was up against {Q-} {10-} for her tournament life.

The flop was clean and raggy, but a ten on the turn was too much for Liebert to overcome. She's out, and Philachack is up to 45,000 in the process.

Diamonds Good to Selbst

Vanessa Selbst groaned when she saw what bad shape she was in. She moved all in for 5,575 from the small blind and was called by a player under the gun, who had limped into the pot. That player tabled {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}, a significant favorite over Selbst's {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. But Selbst flopped a flush draw, {7-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}, then turned her flush with the {j-Diamonds}. She doubled up to 11,500.
