Event #44: $2,500 Seven Card Razz
Day 1 Started
Oh, Razz! You're so much fun.
Welcome to the only razz-only event of the 2011 WSOP, the $2,500 buy-in spectacular. Three hundred sixty-five players entered this event last year, and Frank Kassela came away with the bracelet and more than $200,000 on his way to becoming Player of the Year. Kassela will no doubt be back in the house today to take a shot at the improbable, and we'd expect the total field size to be on par or slightly up from last year.
We're still more than 90 minutes from our start time, so we'll be back with a few opening words from the Amazon Room at the appointed time.
It was just announced by Jack Effel a few minutes ago that the start of play has been delayed one hour due to a large amount of late entrants in Event #43 $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em. Play will hopefully get going at 6 p.m. instead of at the 5 p.m. start time that was originally planned for today. Players will still play eight levels today but it looks like tomorrow will resume at 4 p.m. as opposed to 3 p.m. with nine levels of play to get everyone back on track.

There are still lots of empty seats in the house with the registration number ticking past 250. On our first sweep through the field, though, we already spot a good crowd of notables. A handful of them are even chasing bracelet number two this summer. Jason Somerville, John Monnette, Viacheslav Zhukov, and Allen Bari are among the newest inductees into the bracelet winners' club, and they're in the field today for the only razz event of the Series.
Also joining the pack are the past three champions of this event, Frank Kassela, Jeffrey Lisandro, and Barry Greenstein.
We also have the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, Jerry Buss.
And an eye-catching Lacey Jones.
And a man in a gorilla mask.
And two members of the poker media, Tim Fiorvanti and PokerNews' own Deputy Director of Chip Counts, Mickey Doft. Good luck, gents.

Andrew Badecker, Chris Lee, and Sean Drake can be added to the list of 2011 bracelet winners in our field today.
We also have a pair of former World Champs in the field today. And they're both seated together. Carlos Mortensen and Berry Johnston are sharing space at one of the center tables in Seats 3 and 5, respectively.
Make that three former World Champs as we spot Huck Seed at a nearby table.
Other notables worth mentioning include Jennifer Tilly, Jimmy Fricke, Blair Rodman, Antony Lellouche, Rep Porter, Roland Isra, Steve Diano (who finished 7th and 13th in this event the last two years), and the original David Baker.
Barry Greenstein completed with a up, and Mickey Doft called with a .
Greenstein: (X)(X) / / (X)
Doft: (X)(X) / / (X)
Greenstein bet the whole way, and Doft called him all the way down through seventh and to the showdown. Doft revealed / , and his eight-low earned him the pot. Doft has started the day trending upward to 8,000.
Devonshire: (X)(X) / / (X)
Opponent 1: (X)(X) / / (X)
Opponent 2: (X)(X) / FOLDED
We caught up with the action on fifth where opponent 2 checked-folded to Bryan Devonshire’s bet while opponent 1 who was in between them made the call. On sixth, Devonshire bet again and his opponent called. Opponent 1 wished Devonshire good luck before seventh and Devonshire said “pretty standard hand so far” before telling us that “this was the right order too”. On seventh, Devonshire bet once more but this time his opponent laid it down.
