Bolek Spikes a Double

From under the gun, Chris Bolek raised to 4,000. Action folded a couple of seats over to a player in middle position and he immediately announced a reraise once Sam Stein folded in front of him. The player then tossed out 14,000. Play folded back to Bolek and he paused for a few seconds. Bolek then moved all in for a little over 30,000 and his opponent snapped.

Bolek tabled the {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}, but was in bad shape against his opponent's {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}. The {8-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop kept Bolek behind, but the {J-Hearts} on the turn propelled him to the lead. Bolek was able to fade his opponent's flush and higher set redraw when the {10-Diamonds} hit the river and doubled up.

Bolek's opponent was left with just about 3,000 in chips and eliminated shortly thereafter.

"That's how you win tournaments," joked Bolek's neighbor on his left.

Double for Shulman

We managed to catch up to Barry Shulman right when he was making a call of 4,500 from a player in early position. The player on the button then pushed out a stack of blue 500 chips and made it 13,000. The initial raiser in early position folded with the blinds, and action was on Shulman who moved all in for around 40,000 more. The button snap-called and cards were turned over.

Shulman: {8-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Button: {10-Clubs}{A-Hearts}

A {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} flop jumped out of the deck, allowing Shulman to maintain his lead. A {5-Hearts} on the turn and a{q-Diamonds} on the river sealed the deal and Shulman was granted a double up. Shulman not sits with well over 100,000 and seems to be in prime position for a great run here today.

Perelman Out

Rob Perelman recently took a beat that we discussed and has since been eliminated. First, he lost a flip with {A-}{K-} to David Peters' {8-}{8-} to get knocked down to about 8,000 in chips.

On his elimination hand, the small blind moved in with the {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs} and Perelman called from the big blind with {K-}{7-}. Both players flopped a seven, but Perelman's kicker was the better of the two. Perelman's opponent also flopped a flush draw and hit it on the river to send Perelman to the rail.

Downswing for Hanna

Coming into the day Jessica Bertrand Hanna was our chip leader. Most recently we saw her get into a betting match preflop with one of her medium stacked opponents that ended with the medium stack moving all in and getting called by Hanna.

Hana: {A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}
Opponent: {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}

It was essentially a coin-flip with either playing having a great chance to come out of this hand a winner. A {10-}{3-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} flop gave Hanna's opponent the advantage, and advantage he wouldn't give up. The gave us the {6-Spades} and the river a {5-Hearts}. This small set back has put Hanna a little above 100,000, which is plenty of chips to do well here today.

Balaguer Busts Manley and Stark in Back-to-Back Hands

Adria Balaguer has just hit a nice little rush to move his stack up to 233,000 in chips and take what looks to be the current chip lead. He busted Kevin Manley and Joseph Stark in back-to-back hands to get the chips and here's how it happened.

On the first hand of his two-hand rush, action folded to the cutoff seat where Manley sat. He raised to 5,500. Balaguer was on the button and reraised to 12,500. The blinds folded and Manley reraised all in for 39,300. Balaguer thought for a little bit, then tossed out just one chip to signify a call.

Balaguer: {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}
Manley: {A-Hearts}{J-Clubs}

The flop came down {10-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Hearts} and Manley kept his lead. The turn delivered what would be the winning blow for Balaguer as the {K-Diamonds} fell and then the river completed the board with the {4-Clubs}. Manley was eliminated and not happy about the way he went out.

On the very next hand, Stark raised all in for 30,000 from middle position and action went over to Balaguer in the cutoff seat. He paused, then tossed out a single T100 chip to signify a call. The dealer was a little confused and asked Balaguer to at least slide out a tall stack of chips, which Balaguer did. Everyone else folded and for the second hand in a row, Balaguer was in an all-in situation and looking to knock out an opponent.

Balaguer: {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}
Stark: {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}

This time Balaguer had the lead going in and kept it as the board ran out {K-Clubs}{J-Spades}{8-Clubs}{6-Spades}{A-Clubs} to send Stark to the rail.

Although Balaguer is a rather unknown player, he's had three decent scores to his credit. In March 2011, Balaguer too sixth place in the Unibet Open Malta event for €19,500. Then in September 2011, he took ninth place in the European Poker Tour London Main Event for £45,000. Balaguer saved his best score of 2011, and his career, for the last month of 2011. In December, he scored second place in the World Poker Tour Prague Main Event for €238,000.

More Giant Stacks

Another large chip stack emerging from the day is Dan Hill. Hill who just skeptically called the all in of a short stacked opponent was quite surprised when his {k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} was ahead of his opponent's {J-Spades}{Q-Spades}. He was ahead for now, but there was still board to be dealt out.

A {4-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{5-Hearts} flop was perfect for Hill, who just needed to avoid a queen from falling. The {10-Diamonds} on the turn brought another out for Hill's opponent, a king now could rescue him. Alas it didn't matter when the {5-Diamonds} fell on the river, and Hill's king high was best.
