The action is finished in Event 21, $1,000 No Limit Hold’em, of the World Series of Poker. The first $1,000 on the schedule attracted 2,779 players that had 227 players survive Day 1 and only 17 that survived Day 2. Michael Gathy outlasted them all and claimed the WSOP bracelet and $440,829.

The day began with 17 players across two tables and within two levels the field was trimmed to just ten. William Fichman, Mitch Merritt, Jonathan Poche, Randy Green, Glen McCaffrey, Derek Wolter and Hok-Leung Wong all bowed out early.

They relocated across the Amazon Room on the ESPN Main Stage for ten-handed play. After just 30 minutes or so Dan Smith was the first player eliminated on stage. Smith was low on chips and made a stand holding {A-Hearts} {6-Hearts}, but Noah Vaillancourt’s pocket eights held and sent Smith to the rail just short of an official final table.

Just moments after the official final table announcements were made Joshua Field played his last hand of the day. He made a stand holding {K-Diamonds} {J-Spades} and Jamie Armstrong called holding pocket nines. Field didn’t connect with the board and was sent to the rail.

Jason Manggunio arrived at the final table short on chips and shipped them in preflop. Eric Baldwin called and had Mangunnio outkicked. Baldwin held {A-Spades} {8-Diamonds} and Manggunio had {A-Clubs} {7-Diamonds}. An ace fell on the flop but Baldwin’s kicker sent Manggunio to the payout desk.

Jean-Louis Santoni opened from under the gun and called a re-raise from Vaillancourt. They went to a {4-Diamonds} {K-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} flop and got their stacks all in. Santoni held {Q-Diamonds} {J-Spades} but Vaillancourt was drawing live with {A-Diamonds} {6-Diamonds}. A diamond fell on the turn and Santoni’s day was over.

Eric Davis would be the sixth place finisher when he shoved {A-Spades} {5-Diamonds} and John Esposito called with {A-Hearts} {7-Hearts}. The board ran {8-Hearts} {3-Hearts} {9-Spades} {5-Hearts} {2-Diamonds} and Esposito’s flush sent Davis to the rail.

Eric Baldwin’s fateful hand occurred when he four-bet shoved all in preflop. Noah Vaillancourt called after a lengthy tank and tabled {A-Hearts} {4-Diamonds}. Baldwin held pocket queens but the board hit Vaillancourt square in the face when it ran {2-Spades} {A-Spades} {3-Spades} {6-Diamonds} {A-Clubs}. Baldwin picked up a fifth place finish in his third WSOP final table.

It would be another hour or so before John Esposito exited in fourth place. He got in a bad spot with {A-Diamonds} {6-Diamonds} against Armstrong’s {A-Spades} {8-Diamonds}. They each paired their kicker card on the flop and Esposito never improved.

Vailancourt’s final table ride had him yo-yoing up and down the counts. On his last downward swing Armstrong opened to 200,000 and Vaillancourt shipped it in. Armstrong called with {A-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs} and Vaillancourt was behind holding {Q-Hearts} {10-Clubs}. Neither improved their hand on the board and Vaillancourt exited the tournament with nearly $200,000 for third place.

Heads up play lasted a little over two whole levels. The chip lead shifted back and forth throughout the night, without either player gaining a significant advantage over the other. The last hand came when Armstong four-bet shoved and Gathy called. Armstrong held pocket nines and Gathy pocket tens. The board ran {8-Clubs} {K-Clubs} {5-Clubs} {A-Hearts} {7-Hearts} and it was all over. Gathy's tens held and he claimed his first WSOP gold bracelet.

Noah Vaillancourt - 3rd place

Jamie Armstrong made it 200,000 from the button, and Noah Vaillancourt moved all in after Michael Gathy folded the small blind for about 800,000. Armstrong made the call and Vaillancourt was at risk.

Vaillancourt: {Q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Armstrong: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}

An {2-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{6-Spades}{7-Diamonds} board ran out and Vaillancourt failed to improve and was subsequently eliminated in third.

John Esposito Eliminated in 4th Place ($139,457)

John Esposito - 4th place

Action folded around to Jamie Armstrong in the small blind who took a look at John Esposito's stack in the big blind and moved all in. After a minute of silence Esposito convinced himself he had the best of it and made the call.

Armstrong: {A-Spades}{8-Diamonds}
Esposito: {A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}

Unfortunately Esposito was wrong in his assessment and was all in and behind. A {6-Spades}{8-Hearts}{q-Spades} flop appeared Armstrong furthered his lead. A {5-Clubs} on the turn and a {k-Diamonds} on the river sealed the deal and Esposito was sent packing.

Jamie Armstrong started this recent hand off by raising it up. Action folded over to Noah Vaillancourt in the small blind who three-bet to 175,000. Next it was to Eric Baldwin who moved all in for 710,000. Armstrong folded and Vaillancourt went deep into the tank. Vaillancourt clearly was not very confident in his hand and took his time determining if he even had a chance at winning. Eventually he did indeed complete the call and put Baldwin at risk.

Baldwin: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Vaillancourt: {A-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}

An {2-Spades}{A-Spades}{3-Spades} flop was exposed and Baldwin sky rocketed into the lead with a pair of aces. Baldwin though could still hit a spade to steal the advantage back. A {6-Diamonds} on the turn and a {a-Clubs} on the river sealed the deal and Baldwin was sent packing.

Smith & Vaillancourt Play Ten Minute Hand

Noah Vaillancourt pulling ahead.

Dan Smith started the action by opened to 42,000 and Noah Vaillancourt raised to 93,000 from the cutoff. The blinds released and Smith re-raised to 177,000. Vaillancourt took some time to think and then called.

The flop came {2-Clubs} {7-Clubs} {4-Clubs}, Smith bet 146,000 and Vaillancourt called. But that took quite some time. The turn came {Q-Hearts} which both players eventually checked. The river brought the {10-Hearts}, Smith checked and Vaillancourt bet 238,000 after an excruciatingly long tank. Smith folded rather quickly compared to the pace of the hand and Vaillancourt chipped up significantly.

All in all the hand took about ten minutes to play out.

William Fichman Eliminated in 17th Place ($15,744)

William Fichman - 17th place
William Fichman - 17th place

William Fichman started a recent hand out by opening for 50,000. Action folded around to Jonathan Poche who moved all in for around 400,000. The action then came around to the short stacked Randy Green on the button who called and was all in for 70,000. Finchman also made the call and was at risk.

Poche: {K-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Fichman: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}
Green: {10-Spades}{8-Diamonds}

After a {q-Spades}{j-Clubs}{8-Hearts} flop was unleashed on the felt it was realized that no one was safe, and anyone could come away from this pot a winner. If Poche could hold he would deliver the double knock out, and we would be 15 handed. A {6-Hearts} on the river helped no one, but the {9-Spades} on the river gave Green the straight and he was allowed to tripple up. Poche also managed to get a piece of the pot, and took the remainder of Fichman's stack as his pair of kings were still better than a pair of queens.

Fichman heads to the rail and is our 17th place finisher.
