Four Down, Four To Go

Level 5 : 250/500, 0 ante

Players are back and play has resumed. After playing four one-hour levels thus far, there will be four more levels before Day 1 concludes.

With the start of Level 5, registration has closed. The big board is showing the total has reached the 300-player mark, but we'll try to nail down those official numbers shortly to pass along.

Choosing a Champion's Soundtrack

Level 5 : 250/500, 0 ante

Michael "The Grinder' Mizrachi is among the late registrants, having taken a seat in the Tan section. Shaun Deeb is now sitting in Tan, too. Annie Duke has arrived as well and is sitting over in the Red section. And Event 7: $1,500 Seven Card Stud winner Andy Bloch is here in search of a second bracelet. Bloch is now sitting at a table over in the Red section with another WSOP bracelet holder, Matt Hawrilenko.

The subject at Bloch's table currently is the WSOP bracelet ceremony, where Bloch is explaining apparently winners can request to have any song played to recognize their achievement — i.e., not just the player's national anthem.

"I thought about doing something different," said Bloch. "But I couldn't think of what would be a good song to choose."

"Something from The Book of Mormon?" said Hawrilenko with a mischievous grin, alluding to the popular musical by the creators of South Park.

"No, no, no... 'Insane in the Membrane'!" said another, raising his flattened palms up in raise-the-roof mode.

"How about the shortest song ever?" asked Bloch. "Or what about a real long Skynyrd song?" suggested a railbird, to which Bloch laughed and nodded.

"Yeah!" Bloch replied. "Freebird!"

302 Players

Level 5 : 250/500, 0 ante

The numbers are in. With registration closed, a total of 302 players signed up for this one, together creating a prize pool of $687,050. The top 36 finishers will be dividing up the loot, with $182,088 due the winner.

At present it looks like 222 players out of that starting field are still with us.

Mortensen Shortensen

Carlos Mortensen
Carlos Mortensen

2001 WSOP Main Event champion Carlos Mortensen has been nursing a short stack for the last hour or so, thus making it difficult for him to build those elaborate chip structures which tend to dazzle the eye.

Just now he found himself all in before the flop against two different opponents following a series of preflop bets, then watched as one bet the other out following a {7-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{K-Hearts} flop.

Mortensen tabled {K-Spades}{10-Hearts} for top pair and his lone remaining opponent {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}, and following the {9-Clubs} turn and {5-Hearts} he'd survived to try to rebuild anew.

After an up-and-down day, Phil Ivey's quest for a sixth final table of the 2012 WSOP has ended around 35 tables short.

We missed Ivey's final hand, but Matt Glantz gives us some indication of what happened via Twitter:

Hennigan Flops the World

Level 6 : 300/600, 0 ante

John Hennigan raised from the button and got two callers in the blinds. The flop came {A-Spades}{6-Spades}{6-Clubs}, and it checked to Hennigan. "Johnny World" then plucked three gray (100) chips off his stack and tossed out a bet, and both of his opponents folded.

Hennigan turned over his hand — {A-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} — before scooping the small pot. He sits with about 12,000 at the moment, a little above the average with 198 players left.
