A Huge Day Sees Maimone Lead the Pack

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante
Nick Maimone is in command heading into Day 2
Nick Maimone is in command heading into Day 2

What a huge day of poker! The action on Day 1 of Event 50: $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em has exceeded expectations to become the largest field this event has ever seen, with 1,001 players creating a prize pool of $4,704,700. That’s 136 more players than participated in this event last year when Allen Bari took the down the bracelet. Who will join Bari as a champion of this event? Well, as of right now it is Nick Maimone who has the best chance, as he finished up the day as the chip leader with 196,600 in chips.

We are not exaggerating when we say that every single table in the field today had multiple big names from the poker world. Of course that just means that dozens of the most prominent players in poker were eliminated throughout the day and some of those include the likes of Jason Mercier, Fabrice Soulier, Layne Flack, Christian Harder, Joe Serock, Vanessa Rousso and Antonio Esfandiari.

Another player who couldn’t last more than a couple of hours was Lex Veldhuis. The last hand of Veldhuis’ tournament saw him put in five bets to be all-in holding {8-Spades}{6-Spades} on a {6-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{k-Hearts} flop. His opponent called him off holding {q-Hearts}{8-Hearts} and when a heart fell on the river, it was all over for Veldhuis.

Some of the other players that joined Veldhuis on the rail later in the day include Justin Bonomo, Bertrand Grospellier, Jennifer Tilly, David “Doc” Sands, Brian Rast and Daniel Negreanu. Also finding the exit door was Viktor Blom as he busted just a short while after he registered. Blom was short stacked within an hour of entering the tournament and then got his stack all in holding {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs} on the turn of a {6-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{q-Hearts} board. He asked his opponent if he had trips and then the player obliged by turning over {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}. With no club on the river, it was all over for Blom.

A player who managed to do far better than the above players was Galen Hall. One of the biggest hands of the day saw Hall win a huge amount of chips when he held {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} and turned a set against a player who held an over pair. Hall finished off the day with 129,800 in chips and full details about Hall’s massive hand can be read here.

Joining Maimone and Hall at the tables tomorrow with a huge amount of chips include Michael Drummond (158,000), Gordon Vayo (147,500) and Thiago Nishijima (135,200). Also returning with enough chips to scare are Stephen Chidwick (128,600) and Tommy Vedes (107,100), while notable names Jackie Glazier (94,700), Andrew Lichtenberger (78,300) and Alexander Kravchenko (77,000) also have plenty of chips.

Phil Ivey and Phil Hellmuth are also still in with a chance in Event 50, bagging up 72,200 and 79,000 respectively. Some of those who are clinging to life and will need some help tomorrow are Adam Friedman (6,600), Andy Frankenberger (11,200) and Jennifer Harman (16,300).

A total of 303 players will be taking part in Day 2 action and each and every one will be hoping they can make a run at the huge $952,694 first place and of course, the World Series of Poker gold bracelet. It is all set to kick off at 1:00 PM Friday and PokerNews will again be on the floor providing you all the live coverage.

Hall Scoops a Huge Pot

We caught up with the action in a three-handed pot on a {2-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{8-Diamonds} flop. Several thousand chips were already in the pot from the preflop action.

Terrence Chan checked from early position and his opponent in middle position fired 6,100 into the middle. Galen Hall quickly called from the hijack seat and Chan made the call as well.

The turn brought the {10-Hearts} and Chan checked again, prompting a 13,625 bet from the player in middle position. Hall immediately moved all in for 23,275 on top and Chan folded.

Hall's remaining opponent fell deep into the tank.

"Wowwwwww," he said.

After rocking back and forth and deliberating for a few minutes, he reluctantly committed his last 23,000. Hall flipped over {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} for top set and his opponent tabled {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades} for an overpair.

The {4-Clubs} river bricked for Hall's opponent and he was sent to the rail.

Hall is up to 110,000 after that one.

After scouring the tournament floor we finally found PokerStars Team Pro Viktor Blom. He's seated with Sam Trickett and fellow PokerStars Team Pro Victor Ramdin at a late reg table.

Blom has his chips in an uncountable mixed stack, but we're eyeballing it's around 5,000.

A Look Back with Brian Lemke

Level 4 : 100/200, 0 ante
Lemke received his bracelet and acknowledged Shronk
Lemke received his bracelet and acknowledged Shronk

Brian Lemke looks like any other poker player in the room today but he has a special reason for playing this event. Lemke won this tournament in 2009 and dedicated his win to his cousin Justin Shronk.

Known widely just as "Shronk," he was an integral part of the poker community. He got is start working with PokerRoad as in intern and worked his way up the ladder with hard work and an infectious sense of humor. He also contributed to CardPlayer, BLUFF and even PokerNews.

Shronk suddenly passed away in April 2009 at the age of 27 of natural causes and left a large hole in the heart of the poker media community.

Lemke returns each year to play this event and when asked if the event has any special meaning to him he said, "I don't really know what to say." On the verge of emotion he said, "I want to play well and make the final table."

"It'd be nice to join the elite community of players with two bracelets," Lemke continued. "Especially with the field in this event."

The field in the 2009 affair was just as good at todays. Thomas Keller, Mike Sowers and Isaac Baron all made the final table. Biily Kopp, David Pham, Olivier Busquet, David Benefield, Lars Bonding, Nick Grippo, Faraz Jaka, Kathy Liebert, Erik Seidel and Darryll Fish all finished in the final three tables.

On his chances in the event:

"I think I have a really good chance. I've had a lot of success in high roller events and against bad players."

"I'm Still Trying to Play Good Despite Being Richer than Ever"

Neil Channing (pictured from another event but still has piles of chips)
Neil Channing (pictured from another event but still has piles of chips)

We found Neil Channing and James Dempsey laughing hard and carrying on. Channing had a big smile and twice the starting stack in front of him.

"We had a gentleman here (pointing to a seat card) that wanted to raise me on a {5-} {5-} {9-} flop," Channing said. "I had {5-} {5-}, led out and the gentleman put in a small raise."

"Then this guy (John Dolan) flatted and I just thought I should call," Channing continued.

The turn came {Q-}, Channing checked, the other player bet and Dolan called with a straight flush draw. Channing flatted and the river came {7-}.

"Then I checked, the gentleman bet 4,200, (Dolan) folded and I shoved," Channing continued.

"I thought you had it," the gentleman said after he tabled {Q-} {Q-} for queens full.

"I'm still trying to play good despite being richer than ever," Channing said.
