Chidwick Loses Small One, Still Cruising

Over on Stephen Chidwick's table, he was busy opening up the pot to 2,200. He was then three-bet to 6,500 by Royce Chambers directly on his left. The rest of the table got out of the way and the action was back on Chidwick. He thought long and hard before making the call as a {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}{10-Clubs} flop was dealt. Chidwick checked here and Chambers bet 9,000. Chidwick tank-folded and sent the pot away from his stack.

Despite losing this small pot, Chidwick has already had a great start to the day, seeing his stack increase to sit as one of the largest in the room.

JP Doubles Up

We missed the action, but the short stacked JP Kelly was just seen doubling up holding {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} versus the {10-Spades}{10-Clubs} of an opponent. By the time we arrived at the table, the dealer was already mucking the board, but we did catch a glimpse of a {k-Spades} in there.

Ivey Cut in Half

We caught up with the action on a {A-Spades}{K-Spades}{9-Diamonds} flop in a three-handed pot. It appeared the player in the big blind had checked, another player in the cutoff went all in for about 30,000 and action was on Phil Ivey on the button.

Ivey thought his decision through and eventually committed calling chips. The player in the big folded and hands were revealed.

Ivey: {Q-Spades}{9-Spades} for a pair of nines with a flush draw.
Opponent: {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} for top pair.

Ivey was need to hit a spade or a nine to scoop the pot, however, the {J-Clubs} turn and {4-Hearts} river bricked for him and he was knocked down to 33,000.

Vedes Splashes Pot, Doubles Up Opponent

When we arrived at Table 414, there was a flop showing {6-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{9-Spades} and Robert Macdonald was betting 18,000 into Tommy Vedes. Within a few second Vedes had literally grabbed a handful of of his chips and enthusiastically splashed them into the pot - it was enough to put Macdonald all in. Macdonald seemed taken aback by the splashing, but once he understood that he would be calling all in, he committed the remainder of his chips.

Vedes: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}
Macdonald {a-Spades}{q-Spades}

Vedes had the set, but Macdonald had plenty of outs to the flush. When the {4-Spades} hit the turn, Macdonald celebrated, but he wasn't out of the dark yet. If the board paired, he would be going home. However, the {5-Clubs} river was safe and Macdonald doubled, while Vedes took a small hit to his stack.

Timoshenko Takes a Hit

We caught up with the action just as Yevgeniy Timoshenko was surrendering his chips to an opponent.

Timoshenko held the {9-Spades}{10-Spades} and his opponent the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} on a board reading {2-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{8-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}. We are unsure of the action leading up to the all in, but in any case, Timoshenko's opponent doubled through him for about 24,000 - leaving Timoshenko with 32,500 to work with.

No Hall Pass for Ivey as He Has Been Eliminated

Phil Ivey on Day 1.
Phil Ivey on Day 1.

We caught the action on the turn with the board reading {9-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{A-Hearts}{8-Spades}. Galen Hall had a bet of 8,300 out in front of him and action was on Phil Ivey, who opted to move all in for right around 20,000. Hall snap-called and had Ivey in dire straits.

Showdown
Ivey: {K-Clubs}{J-Hearts}
Hall: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}

Hall held top pair with top kicker, meaning Ivey needed to hit his open-ended straight to stay alive. Unfortunately for Ivey fans everywhere, it was not in the cards as the {6-Clubs} blanked on the river.

Hellmuth Receives Back-to-Back Doubles

Phil Hellmuth started the day with 79,000 but got off to a horrendous start, being knocked all the way down to just under 6,000. Just when it seemed the "Poker Brat" would meet an untimely demise, he caught some cards to double in back-to-back hands.

In the first, Hellmuth got all in preflop with {A-Hearts}{9-Spades} and was up against the {J-Clubs}{8-Clubs} of an unknown opponent. The board ran out a clean {5-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{A-Clubs} and Hellmuth double to around 14,000.

In the very next hand, Hellmuth got it all in preflop with {10-Clubs}{10-Spades} against the {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades} of Marco Bognanni. The board ran out clean again for Hellmuth, falling {J-Hearts}{4-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}, and he put himself back in contention with a stack of 32,000.
