D'Alesandro Leads Into Day 4 with the Money Bubble Looming

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Chip leader - Dave D'Alesandro
Chip leader - Dave D'Alesandro

That’s a Wrap! After five levels of monstrous poker action, Day 3 of the 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event has come to an end. Leading the field heading into the all-important Day 4 is Dave D'Alesandro, who finished up the night with 1.1 million in chips.

D'Alesandro will join approximately 720 other hopefuls who are still in contention to make a run at the title. All of those players will be vying to at least make the top 666 players to pick up a $19,227 min-cash and then continue their journey toward the final table, the $8,527,982 first-place prize, and of course, the gold bracelet.

It started over twelve hours ago when 1,738 returned to the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino with the hopes of making it through the night. However, as is always the case with poker tournaments, not everyone can survive. Some of those who hit the rail throughout the day include Abe Mosseri, John Racener, Chris Tryba, Vicky Coren, Barry Greenstein, Bryn Kenney, Karina Jett, Eugene Katchalov, Faraz Jaka, Nick Schulman, Brian Hastings and 2011 WSOP Player of the Year, Ben Lamb.

Also not managing to survive Day 2 were past WSOP Main Event champions in Dan Harrington (1995), Robert Varkonyi (2002), Jerry Yang (2006), Peter Eastgate (2009) and the defending champ, Pius Heinz. The last hand of Eastgate’s tournament occurred early in the day, with him calling the five-bet all in of Nghi Van Tran on a {2-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{5-Hearts} flop. Eastgate held {a-Hearts}{6-Hearts} and Tran held {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}. Eastgate had plenty of outs to survive and double up, however, it wasn’t meant to be as a {7-Clubs} turn and {8-Clubs} river sent him to the rail. While these Main Event alumni couldn’t endure Day 3, Johnny Chan and Huck Seed advanced to Day 4 with a chance to win another title.

Some of the others who joined the rail throughout the day were former NBA Champion Earl Barron and international cricket star Shane Warne. These sports stars may not have been able to hang on to life, but NHL goalie Roberto Luongo survived the night and will return for Day 4 action.

Luongo in action earlier in the 2012 WSOP Main Event

One of the NHL's premeir goaltenders, Luongo is no stranger to playing on a big stage. He was the starting goalie for the Gold-Medal-winning Team Canada in the 2010 Winter Olympics and is the 17th winningest goalie in NHL history. This isn't Luongo's first time at the WSOP, having played in the NHL charity shootout in 2009. However, it is his first time playing in the Main Event. With the bubble looming, Luongo will be looking to make this his first WSOP cash as well.

Managing to do far better than most players tonight were Sean Rice (1,076,000), Jacob Balsiger (1,065,000), Leo Wolpert (1,003,500) and A.J. Jejelowo (928,500), who will all return tomorrow with some of the largest stacks in the room.

Gaelle Baumann, who started the day with the chip lead, also survived the night, bagging up 599,000 in chips. Another lady of poker who will be aiming to make a deep run is Vanessa Selbst, with the two-time gold bracelet winner having a roller coaster day that saw her bag up a stack of 814,000. A highlight for Selbst occurred late in the evening when she scored a massive double up with the help of a lucky river.

The likes of David "ODB" Baker, Shawn Buchanan, Marcel Luske, Jason Somerville, Maria Ho, Daniel Negreanu, Sorel Mizzi, Mike McDonald, Shaun Deeb and Antonio Esfandiari are just a few of the other notable names still in contention. With these big names of poker still in contention, it is clear that the next few days are sure to be some of the most exciting of the summer.

With approximately 54 eliminations needed until the players are in the money, the bubble is expected to burst during the early stages of tomorrow’s play. Join PokerNews from 12:00 PM PST and be sure to not miss all the action on Day 4 of the 2012 WSOP Main Event!

Selbst Catches River; Scores Huge Double Up

Vanessa Selbst Drills The Club
Vanessa Selbst Drills The Club

We caught up with the action to see three players looking down at a board of {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{9-Spades} and over 70,000 chips already in the pot.

The small blind checked and Vanessa Selbst checked as well. The third player fired out a bet of 50,000 and the small blind got out of the way. Action was now on Selbst and she sat riffling chips and staring at the board.

Selbst announced that she was all in and her opponent announced a call at lightning speed, tabling {4-Spades}{4-Hearts} for a flopped set. Selbst tabled {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for a flush draw and a gutshot. When Selbst saw her opponent's hand, she stood up from the table and grabbed her bag.

"I might be the worst of all time," Selbst said. "Good game guys."

The ESPN camera crews rushed over and every person walking by the rail stopped to see what all of the commotion was about.

"Nice call, man," Selbst said to her opponent while she waited to learn her fate.

Finally, the dealer pounded the table and flipped over the river card.

The {7-Clubs}.

Selbst's opponent shot up from his seat and walked to his supporters on the rail while Selbst let out a heavy sigh and sat back down in her chair. Selbst's opponent sat back down in time to watch a vast majority of his stack moved across the table toward Selbst. The two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner is now sitting on a stack of 540,000.

Selbst would immediately take to Twitter to inform her followers of her huge double up:

Lamb Eliminated

Ben Lamb
Ben Lamb

After losing most of his stack in that jacks versus queens hand, just a few hands later Ben Lamb was open-raising all in for about 29,000 from middle position. It folded to Chris Moorman in the small blind who called the raise, the big blind folded, and the players turned over their hands.

Moorman: {A-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}
Lamb: {5-Hearts}{5-Spades}

There was a brief pause while the ESPN camera crew found their places, then the dealer burned a card and delivered the {2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{7-Spades} flop. Moorman had assumed the lead, while Lamb sat with a stoic look, focusing on the board.

The turn was the {Q-Hearts} and Lamb was down to a couple of outs to save him. The river then brought the {J-Diamonds}, and with about 920 players left, Lamb was standing and shaking the hands of his table mates, his 2012 WSOP Main Event run having ended.

2002 Main Event Champ Robert Varkonyi Eliminated

Robert Varkonyi
Robert Varkonyi

We didn't catch the exact hand, but we can confirm that the 2002 World Series of Poker Main Event champ, Robert Varkonyi, was eliminated after getting all in preflop with {4-}{4-} and running into the {10-}{10-} of David Kluchman. The board ran out dry and Varkonyi's run came to an end shy of the dinner break.

Mercier Manages A Double Up

Jason Mercier- Doubles Up
Jason Mercier- Doubles Up

We caught the action on the flop, which read {10-Spades}{2-Clubs}{2-Spades}. Jason Mercier checked to Russell Brown, who fired out 10,300. John Leathart made the call from the cutoff, and it was back to Mercier. He moved all in for 56,700, and Brown got out of the way after 30 seconds of thought. However, Leathart quickly made the call.

Mercier: {j-Spades}{9-Spades}
Leathart: {k-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

Mericer would need to catch a jack or a spade to survive, and the dealer delievered the {3-Spades} on the turn, giving Mercier the flush. Leathart could still claim the bounty if a ten or two, but the river brought the {a-Spades}.

Mercier doubled up to 144,000, and his roller coaster day continues.

Yang Eliminated

Jerry Yang
Jerry Yang

2007 WSOP Main Event champion Jerry Yang's run here in this year's Main Event has ended on Day 3.

In his last hand, Yang opened with a raise from middle position, then Armando Fernandez reraised from the button. It folded back to Yang who called, and the flop came {Q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. Yang checked, Fernandez bet 25,000, Yang check-raised all in, and Fernandez called immediately.

Yang: {K-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Fernandez: {J-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}

Yang was ahead with a pair of tens for the moment, but the {K-Clubs} fell on the turn to give Fernandez a straight. Yang still had a ton of ways to reclaim the lead on the river, but the {9-Hearts} wasn't one of them, and he hits the rail with about an hour to go before dinner. Meanwhile, Fernandez joins the half-million chip club.

Judet Picks Off a 100K Bluff

Toni Judet
Toni Judet

We didn't catch all the action, but we saw that an unknown player had moved all in for around 100,000 from the cutoff on a board reading {4-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. Toni Judet was on the button and made a quick call with {7-Hearts}{5-Hearts} for a straight.

"Do I even have any outs?" the cutoff asked before rechecking his cards. "No," he said and tossed his cards to the muck. Per tournament rules, the dealer tabled the hand, which was the {K-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. It was an ill-timed bluff by the cutoff, who was officially eliminated when the {4-Spades} was put out on the river.

"Damn, Toni," said another player at the table. "They just keep giving you their chips." Judet just smiled as he stacked the rather large pot.

Jejelowo Jumps Up Over 775K

A.J. Jejelowo
A.J. Jejelowo

In the last hand of Level 12, a player raised to 4,300 from early position and got three callers, including A.J. Jejelowo sitting in middle position. The flop came {2-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}, and when it checked to the raiser he continued for 7,000, and only Jejelowo stuck around.

The turn brought the {9-Spades}. This time Jejelowo's opponent bet 18,000, and Jejelowo responded with a raise to 48,000 which his opponent called.

The river was the {K-Clubs}. Jejelowo's opponent checked, and Jejelowo fired a bet of 85,000 which his opponent called. Jejelowo rolled over {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for the flopped wheel, and his opponent mucked.

That catapults Jejelowo over 775,000, putting some distance between himself and the rest of the field to start the next level.

Boeree Bowling Over Her Table

Liv Boeree- Having a Great Day 3
Liv Boeree- Having a Great Day 3

Pokerstars Pro Liv Boeree came into today with 104,300, and as we near the end of this level, she has nearly tripled that stack.

The latest hand to help her out came on a board that read {4-Spades}{7-Hearts}{5-Spades}{9-Clubs}{4-Hearts}. Boeree was in the small blind, and she put out a pot sized bet of 20,000. Her opponent, Eric Haddad, was on the button, and he thought for about 30 seconds before moving all in for about 65,000.

Boeree nodded her head and announced call, and flipped over {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds} for sevens full. Haddad tabled {a-Hearts}{4-Clubs} for rivered trips which was no good. Haddad never declared himself all in, and after sliding his chips over to Boeree, he noticed that he had one T100 chip covering his cards. That chip went in on the next hand, and he was eliminated.

Defending Champ Heinz Out

Pius Heinz
Pius Heinz

2011 WSOP Main Event champion Pius Heinz entered Day 3 with a short stack of just 36,300, and within the first half-hour hadn't improved too much on his status before committing his remaining chips before the flop with {6-}{6-}.

Unfortunately for Heinz, he found himself up against Gioang Nguyen's {A-}{A-}, and when the board brought to improvement for Heinz, the young German became one of the early Day 3 eliminations.
