The 2008 Main Event Champ is Gone in Monster Hand

Peter Eastgate

With around 10,000 in the pot and a flop of {3-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{5-Hearts}, Nghi Van Tran bet 5,100 only to have 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event winner Peter Eastgate raise to 12,500. Tran took a few moments before three-betting to around 21,000, which prompted Eastgate to four bet to 40,000. Tran, who had the bigger stack, thought for well over a minute before moving all in, and Eastgate made a quick call.

Showdown
Eastgate: {A-Hearts}{6-Hearts}
Tran: {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}

"I know that's what you have," Tran said. "How can you call me?"

Eastgate seemed happy with his straight and flush draws, but he would be left wanting as the {7-Clubs} turn and {8-Clubs} river failed to improve him. "Good game, guys," Eastgate said before collecting his things and exiting the Brasilia Room.

"Let's Just Bag Up Now and Go Home"

Jason Somerville grabbed the chip lead.
Jason Somerville grabbed the chip lead.

Jason Somerville got his day off to a fast start. We missed the action but Somerville was nice enough to give us the Cliff's Notes.

The player in the cutoff opened, Somerville flatted on the button, the small blind moved all in, the cutoff moved all in and Somerville called.

Somerville: {J-} {J-}
Cutoff: {A-} {K-}
Small Blind: {A-} {Q-}

The board ran {K-} {K-} {J-} {10-} {2-} and Somerville's flopped full house eliminated two opponents. He quickly soared into the chip lead. While he was stacking his chips the dealer said something to the effect that he could just back home.

"Let's just bag up now and go home," Somerville said.
