Boutin Blows Up; Mizzi is Onnit

A huge hand involving Onnit representative Sorel Mizzi and Burt Boutin played out right before the break. The hand left Boutin fuming and Mizzi with a huge chip stack.

We arrived at the table with a {j-Spades}{q-Hearts}{8-Hearts} flop already out on the felt and with Mizzi checking in middle position and Boutin checking behind from the button.

Turn: {10-Diamonds}

Mizzi checked here and Boutin led for 10,500. Mizzi then check-raised to 32,000 and it was back on Boutin, who instantly re-raised to 102,000. Mizzi then went all in and this when Boutin got upset - not at Mizzi or anyone at the table, but at himself. "You've got ace-king," he said. "This is just F***ed up."

"Why did you do this to yourself Burt!" Boutin said before claiming the he has to call. Mizzi then tabled {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts} for the Broadway straight, while Boutin flipped over his {a-Spades}{9-Diamonds} for the lower end of the straight. Boutin was not happy with the whole hand and wasn't excited to see the ESPN cameras directed at his face. "This is a real blow up here," he said as he now sits behind a short stack.

Mizzi, who now sits behind a stack of almost 350,000, can be seen below, interviewed earlier in the summer by PokerNews' Sarah Grant.

Will "The Thrill" Plays Reggie Jackson

Will "The Thrill" Failla has been moved over into the Purple section of the Amazon room, and as usual he is engaging his table mates in lively conversation, making their table easily the loudest of those in this half of the large ballroom.

Just now Failla interrupted a monologue to toss out an opening raise of 4,400, and when everyone folded he showed his cards.

"Reggie Jackson, see? Reggie Jackson!" he said, showing {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}. "There was a reason I bet 44!"

Failla refers of course to the number worn by former baseball great Reggie Jackson who during his career earned the nickname "Mr. October" thanks to his repeated successes in the World Series.

Failla has chipped up thus far today, making his own play to become poker's "Mr. October" and make it to the final table, scheduled this year to take place October 28-30, 2012.

Selbst Loses Some

Vanessa Selbst Eyes Up Her Opponent's Stack
Vanessa Selbst Eyes Up Her Opponent's Stack

The table of death in the Blue section of the Amazon room has broken. The likes of Ben Lamb, Tom Franklin, and Vanessa Selbst have gone their separate ways to different tables. We managed to catch the action on the last hand before the table broke.

With the board reading {J-Spades}{4-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}, Vanessa Selbst sat motionlessly staring at the board. After some time, she finally dipped into her stack and tossed out 14,300 into the center of the table. Her opponent called and Selbst showed {A-Diamonds}{9-Spades} for nine and fives. Selbst's opponent showed {Q-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} for queens and fives and was able to take the pot from the two-time bracelet winner.

As Selbst racked up her chips to move, we saw that she walked away from the table with about 392,000.

Latimer Spikes a Jack to Eliminate Coren

Victoria Coren
Victoria Coren

We saw Vicky Coren standing on the rail and she was kind enough to tell us of her unfortunate demise. She began by explaining that while she had started the day with just 7,100, she managed to chip up to 89,000.

After not having a starting hand better than {9-}{9-} all Main Event, she looked down at {Q-}{Q-} and raised to 4,500. Adam Latimer then three-bet to 10,800, and called with {J-}{J-} when Coren moved all in. Coren was in great shape to double to well over the average stack, but a jack spiked on the river to put an end to here 2012 World Series of Poker.

Baranov is a Calling Station

Philip Sternheimer had 32,600 in front of him with the board reading {8-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}, and Sergii Baranov raised to well over 100,000. Sternheimer tanked for the better part of a minute, then folded.

Baranov told Sternheimer that he could see one card, and Sternheimer pointed to the card on Baranov's right. He turned over the {q-Spades}, and mucked both cards.

"If you shove," fellow Russian Andrey Zaichenko piped him. "He will snap-fold."

Zaichenko and Baranov both laughed.

"No," Baranov responded. "You guys know me - I'm a calling station."

Daniel vs. Daniel

Daniel Negreanu opened with a raise to 4,400 only to find Ryan Daniel three-bet to 10,000 from the next seat over.

The flop fell {6-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{Q-Spades} and both players tapped the table. It went check-check for a second time on the {8-Diamonds} turn.

The {6-Hearts} completed the board and Daniel bet 20,000. Negreanu thought about it for roughly thirty seconds before flinging out a call. Daniel showed {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds} and Negreanu mucked his hand. With this loss Negreanu has fallen under the 200,000 chip mark.

Gulyy's Stack Smited by Jacks

A player in early position opened for 4,500 and action folded over to Andrey Gulyy in the cutoff seat, who called. Ezha Abugazal then squeezed to 12,500 from the button and everyone else folded back around to Gulyy, who moved all in for a bit over 100,000. Abugazal quickly called to put Gulyy at risk.

Gulyy: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}
Abugazal: {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}

"Good luck," Gulyy wished Abugazal.

It appeared Gulyy would be the lucky one, as an {A-Hearts} came right in the window of the flop, however, the other two cards hiding behind it were the {9-Spades} and {J-Hearts}, giving Abugazal a set of jacks. An {A-Diamonds} gave Gulyy a glimmer of hope, however, the {4-Diamonds} bricked out for Gulyy and he was sent to the rail.

Baumann Adds Some

After dropping a few chips at the beginning of the level, Gaelle Baumann is back up to about 550,000.

Picking up the action in a three-handed pot after a {10-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} flop, Baumann check-called 7,300 from an opponent. The third player in the hand folded and the {Q-Diamonds} hit the turn. Baumann check-called another bet, this one for 17,300, to see the {4-Diamonds} river. She and her opponent both checked with Baumann tabling {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for a flush.

Her opponent flashed {J-Spades}{J-Clubs} as he watched the pot get pushed Baumann's way.
