Day 5 Concludes; Kyle Keranen Leads The Final 97 Players

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante
Kyle Keranen Leads Final 97 Players
Kyle Keranen Leads Final 97 Players

When the sun rose over Las Vegas today, 282 players awoke with dreams of becoming the next world champion of poker. After five grueling levels of play on Day 5, only 97 remain. This means that at the most basic level, each player returning for Day 6 has at least a one in ninety-seven shot at winning the first place prize of $8,527,982 and the shiny gold championship bracelet that accompanies it. The one closest to achieving this goal is Kyle Keranen who is sitting on the biggest stack in the room with 6,935,000.

On Keranen's heels is Robert Salaburu who finished Day 5 with a stack of 6,195,000. Rounding out the top three is Taylor Paur with 5,820,000.

When the day began there were several notable names still in the hunt for the championship. However, as both the blinds and the pressure rose, many of those players were sent to the rail with their summer coming to an end a bit earlier than they would have enjoyed. Eric Cloutier, Jesse Martin, John Juanda, Andrew Lichtenberger, Freddy Deeb, JP Kelly, Randy Haddox, AP Phahurat, Andrew Moreno, Will Souther, Dan Shak, Chance Kornuth, John Phan, and Sorel Mizzi are just a handful of the players who saw their stacks vanish today.

Daniel Negreanu was one of the other faces to hit the rail today. This makes Negreanu's second Day 5 bust from the Main Event in back to back years. While seated at the featured table, Negreanu moved all in for his last 240,000 in chips from early position. It folded around to actor Kevin Pollak in the cutoff who tanked before moving all in for his last 500,000. It folded around and Pollak showed {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} which was crushing Negreanu's {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}. Negreanu failed to improve and was forced to end his summer with a 160th-place finish.

Soon after, Pollak would meet his untimely demise in a most sickening fashion. Pollak moved all in before the flop holding {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} and was called by Omar Saeed with the other two queens. Saeed would flop two hearts and then hit two more on the streets to follow to end Pollak's impressive run in the Main Event. After the initial shock wore off of Pollak's face, all he could do was laugh at the crazy scenario that unfolded. The renowned actor made a remarkable run with his 134th-place finish and left everyone within the vicinity of his table with a smile on their face.

The day also saw the elimination of the oldest player in the field, the 76-year-old Perry Green. Green has three WSOP bracelets to his name and finished runner-up to Stu Ungar in the 1981 WSOP Main Event. Green announced "Shuffle Up and Deal" to the runners today and left an impression of humility on the room through his words. Green hit the rail when he ran into the two pair of an opponent.

Jospeh Cheong was also returning to play today to take on his third consecutive Day 5 in a row. Cheong was able to battle through and move on to the final table in 2010 and finished in 114th in 2001. Cheong was forced to settle for a 115th place finish this year when he was eliminated by Paul Volpe. Volpe ended up finishing the day with a stack of 3,250,000.

While many big names fell, others were able to thrive and move on to Day 6 of the biggest poker tournament in the world. Keranen finished the day as the chip leader and was able to start his upward trend when he six-bet all in with {Q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}. Keranen was able to crack his opponent's pocket jacks to scoop the pot of almost three million chips.

Other notable names that will be returning for Day 6 include Gaelle Baumann (3,980,000), Jan Heitmann (3,410,000), Amnon Filippi (3,400,000), Elisabeth Hille (3,390,000), A.J. Jejelowo (3,340,000), Roland Israelashvili (2,805,000), Marcia Topp (1,700,000), Jason Somerville (1,400,000), David ODB Baker (1,360,000), Vanessa Selbst (1,350,000), Erik Cajelais (1,180,000), Greg Merson (945,000), Sam Holden (765,000), and Gavin Smith (675,000).

Play will resume tomorrow at 12:00 PM PST where the final 97 players will return for five more levels. Join us here on PokerNews as we track these players' quests for WSOP glory!

Keranen Vaults Into Chip Lead

Kyle Keranen- New Chip Leader
Kyle Keranen- New Chip Leader

Kyle Keranen raised to 60,000 from under the gun, and Marcia Topp called from the big blind. The flop came down all spades {3-Spades}{10-Spades}{q-Spades}, and Topp fired 100,000. Keranen called, and the turn was the {2-Diamonds}. Topp check called a bet of 175,000 from Keranen, and the river was the {5-Diamonds}. This time, Topp bet 175,000, and it was on Keranen. He elected to raise it to 475,000, and after about 30 seconds of thinking, Topp made the call.

Keranen {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Topp: {k-}{q-}

Keranen's ace kicker was good enough to take the pot, upping him to a chip leading 6.816 million. That hit drops Topp to 1.682 million.

Pratt Levels Luske

Marcel Luske- Out
Marcel Luske- Out

Eric Pratt made it 62,000 to go from under the gun, and it folded to Marcel Luske in middle position. He three bet it to 215,000, and it folded back around to Pratt. He announced all in, and Luske made the call. The cards were tabled, and Luske was in a world of hurt.

Luske: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Pratt: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}

Luske would need a ton of help going to the flop, and it was about as dry as it could have been for Luske, coming {10-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. Luske would need runner runner now to win, but the turn brought the {9-Clubs}. The meaningless river was the {10-Clubs}, and Luske headed to the rail.

Meanwhile, Pratt rockets up to 3.742 million after that hand.

Filippi Nails the Turn and Doubles Through Clemencon

Amnon Filippi
Amnon Filippi

From under the gun, Amnon Filippi raised to 63,000. Tristan Clemencon flatted from the cutoff seat and everyone else folded before the two players were presented with the {8-Spades}{7-Hearts}{5-Spades} flop. Filippi led with a bet of 90,000 and Clemencon raised to 231,000. Filippi called.

The turn was the {Q-Diamonds} and Filippi checked. Clemencon announced that he was all in and Filippi reacted as if he couldn't believe what he just heard before snap-calling. He tabled the {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} for top set and Clemencon flew out of his chair and turned over the {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds} in disgust. Clemencon took a few moments away from the table while the cameras rolled and Filippi quietly waited to see if the river brought the case seven.

The river completed the board with the {J-Spades} and Filippi had successfully doubled up. He moved to over 2.6 million while Clemencon was knocked all the way back to just over one million.

Despite all of his poker success, that includes lifetime tournament earnings in excess of $2.8 million in live events, Filippi has only cashed in the World Series of Poker Main Event one other time. In 2007, he finished in 498th place for $27,282. He's nearing the next pay jump that will more than double that result, but with the chips he recently picked up on this double up, Filippi could very well be in for the run of his life.

No Day 6 for Cheong

Joseph Cheong- 116th
Joseph Cheong- 116th

Wow. It was an absolute nightmare of a level for former November Niner Joseph Cheong. He came back from dinner break with 3.1 million, and all that is gone within this level. Paul Volpe is the one that did him in.

Cheong was down to about 1.1 million when he made his stand in a preflop raising war with Volpe. Cheong held {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}, and Volpe tabled {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}. The flop was a tough one for Cheong, coming down {5-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{6-Hearts}. Cheong would now need one of the two remaining tens in the deck, but it wasn't meant to be. The turn was the {2-Hearts}, and the river was the {j-Clubs}.

Despite this downfall, it can't be overlooked how impressive Cheong has been in the last three main events. He finished 3rd in 2010, 114th in last year's and he will finish 116th this year. Meanwhile Volpe is up to 4.25 million.

Kevin Pollak Eliminated In Brutal Fashion

Kevin Pollak
Kevin Pollak

Poker can truly be a cruel game, and Kevin Pollak knows that more than anybody right now. Kirill Rabtsov raised to 52,000 under the gun, and Omar Saeed called from the button. Kevin Pollak moved all in from the big blind for his last 369,000 and Rabtsov quickly moved all in over the top. Saeed folded, and the cards were tabled.

Rabtsov: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Pollak: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}

Most of the crowd got a chuckle when they saw the hands, as it looked destined for a chopped pot. However, the flop came down {K-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{k-Hearts}. Rabtsov was now frerolling, as he would win the pot with two more hearts. The {3-Hearts} hit the turn, and the crown started to groan. Pollak put his hands on his head, and was hardly able to look at the river.

River: {2-Hearts}

The whole mothership let out a disgusted sigh, and Pollak was left in shock. After a few moments, he let out a laugh, and said "it's so absurd you have to laugh."

With that, Pollak is sent to the rail, and he left to a nice round of applause. After that hand, Rabtsov is up to 1.651 million.

Green Makes His Exit

Perry Green
Perry Green

Perry Green has just been eliminated.

In what would be Green's last hand, Danny Wong raised to 44,000 from the button and Green flatted from the small blind. Jacob Balsiger also called from the big blind for a three-way pot.

All three players checked the {8-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} flop, however, Green pushed all in for his last 300,000 when the {J-Spades} landed on the turn. Balsiger announced, "Call," to put Green at risk and Wong got out of the way.

Green: {K-Spades}{J-Hearts} for a pair of jacks.
Balsiger: {8-Spades}{7-Hearts} for two-pair.

Green was drawing live, however, the {5-Hearts} river bricked out for him and he was sent to the rail.

The 76-year-old, who has three World Series of Poker hold bracelets and is famously known for losing out to Stu Ungar heads-up in the 1981 Main Event, will take home $52,718 for his efforts.

Balsiger is up to 2.8 million.

Daniel Negreanu Eliminated by Kevin Pollak

Level 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Daniel Negreanu-Out
Daniel Negreanu-Out

Daniel Negreanu moved all in for his last 240,000 from early position. It folded around to Kevin Pollak in the cutoff, and after tanking for about 90 seconds, he moved all in for about 500,000. Everyone else folded, and the cards were tabled.

Negreanu: {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Pollak: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

Negreanu was in a world of hurt, and he was looking for a king or diamonds going to the flop. He got no help from that, as it came {5-Spades}{j-Clubs}{6-Hearts}. Pollak was standing up, rubbing his hands on his head, while Negreanu sat in his chair to await his fate. The turn brought the {5-Diamonds}, and Negreanu was looking for a king and a king only.

River: {3-Clubs}

It's another Day 5 bustout for Daniel Negreanu, who wished the whole table good luck before making his exit. As always, Negreanu was extremely gracious in defeat, and is still posing for pictures with fans who are lining up in the mothership as we are typing this. Kevin Pollak said before the tournament that Negreanu was one of his poker idols, and while he loves to have the chips, he surely didn't want them to come from Negreanu, who will have to wait for next year to have another shot at the Main Event Final Table.

Keranen Rips Off a Queen For The Chip Lead

Kyle Keranen is the new chip leader!
Kyle Keranen is the new chip leader!

Luke Brereton raised preflop to 45,000 from the cutoff, after which Kyle Keranen three-bet from the button to 105,000. Both blinds folded, and Brereton opted to four-bet to 245,000. Keranen announced he was all in, and Brereton called off his remaining 1.3 million chips to create a massive preflop all in.

Keranen turned over {Q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}, and he got caught bluffing by Brereton who showed {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}.

The flop brought out {Q-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{4-Clubs}, and Keranen shouted "Yes!" as he took a commanding lead.

"Just two more!" Keranen said as the dealer burned before putting out the turn.

The {4-Diamonds} hit, and Keranen said, "Just one more!".

On the river the {9-Clubs} hit, and Keranen jumped into the chip lead. Brereton was left behind with just a payout slip, and his Main Event dream is over.

Keranan consoled with opponent who looked devastated, "Good call man." "That's how you win poker tournaments," Keranan said with a huge smile after he stacked up his freshly won chips.

River Spade for Coultas Busts Moreno

Andrew Moreno (Day 4)
Andrew Moreno (Day 4)

When PokerNews arrived at the table, the board read {J-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{5-Spades}{K-Spades} between threes players; Charles Coultas, Andrew Moreno and Lasse Soerensen.

According to a fellow member of the media, Moreno had opened with a raise preflop to approximately 45,000 and Soerensen called from the cutoff seat. Coultas called from the small bind and the flop was dealt {J-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{5-Spades}. It was said that Coultas checked, Moreno fired a continuation bet of 79,000 and Soerensen called. Coultas also called and all three players remained in to see the turn.

Fourth street brought the {K-Spades} and Coultas checked. Moreno kept his foot on the gas and fired 162,000. Soerensen took a minute, then called. Coultas had other things in mind, though, and raised all in, having both players covered. Moreno went into the tank. He had just about 480,000 behind and his tournament would be on the line if he were to call.

At one point while tanking, Moreno asked Soerensen how much he had and got an eyeballed count. After a couple minutes, he finally made the call. It was at this point that Amnon Filippi yelled out, "Hey ESPN, we've got a huge pot over you're going to want to film!" and the cameras came rushing over from another table. Soerensen was still tanking, though.

The cameras got to the table and quickly set up while Soerensen thought. He took some time, but eventually folded. Later it was rumored that Soerensen folded {K-}{J-} for top two pair.

"Do you have it?" Moreno asked looking at Coultas. No one turned over their hand yet as the cameras locked in on everything. Coultas didn't respond, which then Moreno confidently showed the {K-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for two pair, kings and fives. Coultas held the {A-Spades}{10-Spades} for a combo draw and needed a queen or a spade on the river.

There was a little bit of a pause while the cameras rolled and the rail right next to the table became flooded with fans of both players. The dealer was given the go ahead by the ESPN crew and that's when Moreno looked at his rail of friends and said, "This is what it's all about!"

The river was dealt and the {3-Spades} hit the felt, delivering a flush to Coultas and eliminating Moreno from the tournament. Moreno collected himself off to the side of the table, coping with what could have been. After a minute, he returned to the table to be escorted to the payout desk while Coultas began stacking up his new found wealth.

It took Coultas a few minutes to stack all of the chips from the pot, but when he was done, his stack amounted to just under three million. Soerensen was left with 680,000 after folding the turn.
