Some Chip Counts at the Break

While keeping track of some of the notable players throughout the break in the Gold and Silver section of the Brasilia room, we came across 2001 WSOP Main Event Champion Carlos Mortensen sporting a massive stack of about 30,000.

We also noticed that short-stacked Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier's seat is now vacant, so we can assume that he has hit the rail.

The players are back in their seats here in Event 9. Two more levels and we will be having a dinner break.

We have been informed that 1,696 players have taken their seats in today's event. The day will end when just 15% of the field remains.

More Updated Counts

Here is a look at how some of the players are doing today. Jason Koon is currently looking pretty good as he aims to continue the success he saw in Event 3: $3,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em/Pot-Limit Omaha where he took 2nd place.

Also late registering is Liv Boeree. For those keeping score, she has been seated at Erik Seidel's table.

Mortensen Pushes

On a flop of {3-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}, Carlos Mortensen checked to his opponent who fired out a bet of 750. Mortensen called and the {5-Clubs} turned. Both players checked to find the {2-Hearts} come on fifth street.

Mortensen carefully counted out a bet to 2,875 and flung it to the middle of the table. His opponent quickly threw away his hand and Mortensen was able to drag in the pot.

Mercier Gets Bet Out

A middle position player opened to 450 and Jason Mercier pushed out a three-bet to 975. Action folded back to Mercier's opponent who stacked his chips into one tall stack before pushing it into the middle.

The magic number was 5,675 and Mercier counted his chips before opting to toss his hand away. Mercier is now sitting with about 10,500.

Elezra Getting Chatty

When we arrived at Eli Elzra's table there was a flop showing {k-Spades}{a-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} and Elzra was involved in a hand with three opponents. Two of the players checked to Elezra and he bet 300. All three of his opponents made the call and Elzra said, "Ace-King on the flop and everyone of you calls me?"

As Elzra was finishing his sentence, the dealer flipped over a {7-Hearts}. The play was again checked to Elezra.

"I dont know if this is right, but.." said Elzra as he slid his cards into the muck, not taking his option to check.

"I needed to do that before i got into trouble," quipped Elezra as he casually leaned back in his chair.

As we left the table, a player to his Elzra's left yelled out to the room, "One dollar for a smoke!" A player on a different table obliged and happily took the dollar.

"Now i'll pay you $20 to light it up and smoke it here at the table," said Elezra to the man who now sits with a smoke in front of him.

Traniello Takes It Down

Marco Traniello
Marco Traniello

Marco Traniello is a name that can often be associated with the WSOP. It's hard to deny Traniello's skill in the game, as he has an astounding 27 WSOP cashes to his name, with four of those cashes coming in at the 2011 WSOP. Not only that, but Traniello is also the husband of poker pro Jennifer Harman.

Traniello was recently involved in a hand where he and two other players were staring down at a flop of {Q-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. A player opened for 525 and received a call from both the other player and Traniello.

The turn brought the {9-Hearts} and the original aggressor checked. The second player bet 1,575 and Traniello called once again. The bettor on the flop mucked his hand and we were heads up going to the river.

The {6-Diamonds} fell on the river and Traniello's opponent bet 2,050. Traniello called, tabling {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for a turned straight, which was superior over his opponent's flopped two pair with {Q-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}. Traniello is now sitting on a stack of about 17,000.
