Event #14: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em Day 2 Getting Under Way

Frank Kassela
Frank Kassela

We started this event with 1,819 yesterday and after 11 levels of play, we find ourselves with 206 players vying for the first-place prize of $454,424. For 198 of those players, a WSOP cash is just around the corner. We expect to hit the money soon and will continue on through ten 1-hour levels of play.

Mark Wahba, from Cleveland, Ohio is in the lead with 152,000. There are plenty of notables still remaining in the field including Frank Kassela (121,800), Todd Terry (83,400), Dan Kelly (36,000), Paul Wasicka (38,300), Amit Makhija (23,600) and Andy Frankenberger (22,100). A few notable shot stacks Adam Geyer (13,300) and Cary Katz (8,700) have their work cut out for them as we are beginning the day at level 12 with 600/1,200 blinds and a 200 ante. Play resumes in the purple section of the Amazon Room if you are interesting in railing the action. Of course you can stay right here with PokerNews.com for the latest updates.

While we wait for the action to commence, why not check out Kristy Arnett with all the highlights from around the Rio to get you started on another day of action here at the 2013 World Series of Poker.

Hanks and Lindgren Tangle Early

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

From the button Brent Hanks raised to 2,400. He was only called by Erick Lindgren in the big blind.

On the flop of {7-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} both players checked. The turn was the {4-Hearts} and Lingren decided to take a stab at the pot with a bet of 5,200. Hanks just called.

The river was the {5-Spades} and this time Lindgren checked. Hanks fired out a bet of 8,600 and this put Lindgren in the tank for nearly two minutes. He thought very intently about making the call, but then decided to throw it away. "I think that river saved me," Lindgren said.

"You got saved," Hanks said, showing the {5-Hearts}{6-Hearts} for a turned straight.

This Katz Has Nine Lives

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

When hand for hand play started, Michael Katz only had about 9,000 chips, putting him on the brink of elimination.

After hand for hand was over, Katz is now sitting with a healthy stack of about 42,000 after doubling up twice.

In the first hand, a player in the one seat opened to 3,300. Katz shoved from the button for his last 8,900 and after thinking about it, the player in the one seat called. Katz was way ahead with his {J-Clubs}{J-Spades} but he still had a little sweat as his opponent was holding {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}. The board ran out {10-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{9-Hearts} giving Katz his first double up.

In the second hand, Katz was all in and at risk again. This time he held {9-Spades}{9-Clubs} against his opponent's {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}. Much more of a sweat for Katz. It only got worse when the flop fell {K-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. Lucky for Katz, the turn was the {5-Clubs} and the river was the {8-Diamonds}, giving him his second double up.

He is now sitting right back around average stack after being at risk twice during hand for hand play.

We Are In The Money

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

On the second deal of hand for handplay, our Day 2 chipleader, Mark Wahba, opened from the cutoff for 2,600. The button folded and Zohar Spivack, from the small blind, went all in for his final 18,600. After talking to Spivack for a while, Wabha decided to call. When the hands were tabled, Spivack had Wahba dominated and hope was alive.

Zohar Spivack: {A-Spades}{10-Hearts}
Mark Wahba: {j-Spades}{10-Spades}

It was not meant to be for Spivack as a {j-Clubs}{3-Spades}{10-Diamonds} was dealt on the flop giving Wahba the lead. The {7-Hearts} turn and {8-Spades} river did not improve Spivack's hand and he was eliminated 199th place and has earned the title of Event #14 Bubble Boy.

Micon "The Icon" Gets Lucky

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

We caught Bryan Micon move all in before the flop only to be called by another player at the table. Micon was not at risk though, as he had a covering stack.

Micon: {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}
All In Player: {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}

Micon was in big trouble and he needed to catch up to win the pot. Fortunately for him the board ran out {4-Spades}{5-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts} giving him the winning set. "The Icon" has moved way up the chip counts after the lucky {Q-Hearts} on the turn.

Nguyen and Balsiger Busto

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

We didn't catch the action but we saw Jake Balsiger's cards hit the muck with his opponent holding {10-Hearts}{10-Spades} on a board of {7-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades}. Fortunately for Balsiger, he was able to pick up a mincash for his efforts.

Also now missing from the field after hand for hand play is Huy Nguyen.
