Michalowski Leads the Remaining 28 Players

Level 18 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Rafal Michalowski - Chip leader
Rafal Michalowski - Chip leader

Event #2: $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em Eight Handed continued on Thursday with Day 2 action, and after another 10 levels of play, only 28 players remain. The chip leader is Rafal Michalowski, and he bagged 632,000. Joining him atop the counts are Markus Gonsalves (502,000), Trevor Pope (465,000), Ismael Bojang (463,000), and Tom Marchese (446,000).

The day began with 194 players, but only 56 would make the money. Among the first players to hit the rail were Grayson Ramage, Randy Haddox, Scotty Nguyen, James Dempsey, Benjamin Palmer, Leo Wolpert, Faraz Jaka, Victor Ramdin, and Jonathan Little. Palmer and Wolpert were both eliminated by Aaron Jones when they wagered all of their remaining chips with pocket nines and eights respectively. Jones had them both dominated with pocket jacks, and held when the board brought all blanks.

Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, also exited before the money bubble burst. According to two-time WSOP bracelet winner Vanessa Selbst, Phelps four-bet shoved for a little less than 20 big blinds with ace-queen, and David Diaz looked him up with ace-six. Diaz flopped a pair of sixes, and Phelps hit the door when the turn and river both produced bricks.

Selbst also busted during the first few levels, while Diaz went on to make the money, ending the day with 130,000.

Three players started the day with more than 100,000 chips: Marchese, David “Doc” Sands, and Scott Baumstein. Baumstein added to his stack to start the day, but then lost a massive pot to Lithuania’s Kristijonas Andrulis. The money went in on a board of {8-Spades}{2-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Spades}, and Baumstein showed {6-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} for the second-nuts. Andrulis had the stone nuts with {9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}, and held when the {a-Spades} completed the board.

Baumstein took another big hit against Andrulis a few hands later, but was still able to make the money, busting in 37th place for $11,235.

Sands and Marchese both maintained big stacks throughout the day, and bagged 172,000 chips and 446,000 chips respectively.

In Level 15, the bubble burst after an hour of hand-for-hand play. Lloyd Mandel was the unfortunate bubble boy when he blinded down to less than a big blind and was forced to go all in with three-two suited. Sam Stein called in the big blind with queen-ten, and held.

After the bubble burst, there was a flurry of eliminations, including Angel Guillen, Sergey Rybachenko, Andreas Hoivold, and Steve Brecher. Twenty more players fell and eventually there were only four tables remaining. Michalowski and Markus Gonsalves rocketed up the charts after the money bubble burst. Michalowski was fortunate in one hand where he busted Alexander Kuzmin in Level 18. Kuzmin open-shoved for around 10 big blinds with pocket sixes, and Michalowski called with pocket fours. Michalowski binked a four, and Kuzmin was eliminated.

Michalowski and his 27 opponents will return tomorrow at 2 p.m. to play down to an official final table of eight. Join us then for live updates straight from the tournament floor.

Esfandiari Gets Three-Outed; Busts

Level 16 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Antonio Esfandiari - Eliminated
Antonio Esfandiari - Eliminated

Dan Kelly opened for a standard raise from early position, and Antonio Esfandiari three-bet all in for 35,000 in the cutoff, and the action folded back to Kelly, who called.

Kelly: {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}
Esfandiari: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

Esfandiari was in great shape to double, and remained ahead after the flop ({4-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{5-Hearts}) and the turn ({3-Spades}), but the {j-Clubs} spiked on the river, and he was eliminated.

Kelly now sits with 300,000 chips.

Serock Takes One on the Bubble

Level 15 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Joe Serock
Joe Serock

On the third hand of hand-for-hand play, Joe Serock raised to 5,300 from under the gun, Matthew Parry three-bet to 13,000 on his direct left, and the action folded back to Serock, who called.

The flop fell {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}{6-Diamonds}, Serock checked, and Parry continued for 16,000. Serock made the call, then checked again when the {7-Diamonds} turned. Parry fired another 27,000, and Serock called.

The prettiest card in the deck - the {a-Spades} - completed the board, and Serock checked a third time. Parry opted ro check behind, showing {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a bricked straight flush draw. Serock opened up {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for trip aces, and raked in the pot.

Top Set for Rast

Level 14 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Brian Rast
Brian Rast

Out of the small blind Peter Gould raised it up to 5,000. Brian Rast in the big blind had bigger plans for this hand and made it 12,500 to go. As Gould made the call, the dealer put {A-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{Q-Hearts} on the table. Gould now bet out 19,000 and saw Rast shoving for 29,500. Gould asked the dealer to get the 19,000 in the middle to see how much it exactly was to call. After the dealer obliged, Gould made the call and said: "I'm a little behind" and he showed his {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}.

"The good news for you is that I'm not very lucky with this hand" Rast replied. "The bad news is that I have a really good hand" as he turned over his {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}. The turn was a very scary card for Rast as it gave Gould a bunch of outs: {K-Hearts}. Rast already lost a big hand earlier today with aces but fortunately for him he didn't make a habbit out of it: {Q-Spades} on the river. Rast is back in the game!

Straight Over Straight

Level 13 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Scott Baumstein on the wrong end of a cooler
Scott Baumstein on the wrong end of a cooler

When we reached the table, Scott Baumstein had 4,800 sitting in front of him on a board of {8-Spades}{2-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Spades}. Kristijonas Andrulis raised to what looked like 20,000 or so, Baumstein announced all in, doubling-fisting two stacks forward, and Andrulis snap-called the 85,900-chip bet.

"Wow," someone said at the table. "This is a big one."

Baumstein quickly turned over {6-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} for a turned straight, and half a heartbeat lader Andrulis showed {9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} for the stone-cold nuts.

The {a-Spades} bricked off on the river, and Andrulis was shipped the massive pot. Baumstein needed a second to collect his thoughts, and promptly stepped away from the table.

"All They Do is Laugh"

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth led out for 4,000 on a flop of {4-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{9-Spades}, Ben Hamnett raised to what looked like 10,000, and the 13-time bracelet winner called.

The two checked when the {2-Spades} turned, and the {j-Diamonds} completed the board. Hellmuth checked a third time, Hamnett fired out 18,000, and the Poker Brat shot up out of his chair. Perplexed, he began mouthing possible scenarios.

"You have ace-jack and you got there?" he muttered just loud enough for Hamnett to hear.

He finally slid forward enough chips to call, then angrily mucked when Hamnett showed {4-Spades}{4-Clubs} for a flopped set. Hellmuth continued to steam after the hand, and all Hamnett could do was chuckle.

"That was so cold," Hellmuth sighed. "And all they do is laugh."

Talley Goes Crazy

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante
Craziest hand of the WSOP so far?
Craziest hand of the WSOP so far?

"You gotta write down this hand" said Scott Baumstein as we we're trying to figure out the action in a big hand at his table. Baumstein wasn't involved in the hand himself, but was very excited about it. And with good reason, the hand was one of the craziest we've written about yet this summer. It's still early in the series but it does say something.

According to Baumstein, Sam Stein had opened under-the-gun plus one and then called when Caufman Talley three-bet from the button. Stein check-called a bet on {5-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}, and check-raised on the {2-Hearts} on the turn. Talley made the call and both players saw the {K-Clubs} fall on the river. Stein bet out 17,600 with only 15,750 behind. Talley immediately shoved all in putting all the pressure in the world on Stein. Stein had a lot of trouble coming up with his answer to that situation, but eventually made the call by putting his chips in the middle.

Talley had a weird smirk on his face as he confessed he didn't have anything. Stein showed his {A-Clubs}{4-Clubs} for flopped trips and Talley wanted to muck. The dealer was strict though; since it was an all-in showdown Talley had to show. The moment we had all been waiting for was there. With what hand had Talley three-bet preflop, bet the flop, bet and called the turn and raised the river all in? It was... {Q-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} for absolutely nothing.

Stein now has close to 100,000 in chips, while Talley has to work with a stack containing one zero less than that.

Selbst Versus Phelps

Level 9 : 300/600, 75 ante
Michael Phelps
Michael Phelps

Vanessa Selbst opened under-the-gun to 1,300 and got just one caller: Michael Phelps in the big blind. Phelps check-called 1,200 on {J-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} flop and 3,400 on the {A-Spades} turn. The river was the {4-Spades} and with just 10,700 behind, Phelps checked for the third time. Selbst gave it some thoughts, and then decided to put Phelps all in by placing a big pile of 1,000 chips in the middle of the table. Phelps didn't want to do it and quietly folded his hand.
