Kilpatrick Can't Get There

Level 14 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

A short-stacked Kory Kilpatrick was just all in and at risk with {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} and in need of improvement versus Barry Hutter's {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}.

"Come on, I just want a good sweat!" said Kilpatrick before the community cards were dealt. The dealer then spread the flop {8-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{A-Spades} to give Kilpatrick a flush draw.

"There we go!" he said. "I'm happy... I don't care what happens now."

But when the turn came the {3-Spades}, Kilpatrick was amending his position.

"Okay, actually I want a heart," he said grinningly, and the table chuckled.

Alas for Kilpatrick, the river was the {2-Clubs} and he departed about 20 spots shy of the cash.

This Ain't His First Rodeo

Level 14 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
T. J. Cloutier Brought His Game Face to Day 2
T. J. Cloutier Brought His Game Face to Day 2

After winning a recent hand with {4-Spades}{4-Hearts} by flopping a set, T.J. Cloutier was a bit confused regarding Steve Bartlett's actions.

Apparently, Cloutier had bet his hand on the river, and Bartlett tossed out a single chip to signify a call.

Cloutier rolled over his winner, and went to claim the rest of Bartlett's short stack, thinking the single chip had actually represented an all-in declaration.

After being told that Bartlett had only called, Cloutier gently chided his much younger opponent in a tone typically reserved for perturbed grandfathers.

"I'm sorry son, in my day when they tossed one chip in after a bet it meant all in," drawled Cloutier. "I've played a poker tournament or two in my day, and that's always how it was."

Despite not claiming Bartlett's whole stack, Cloutier added to his own with the win, and he is quietly approaching a remarkable third cash in just his fourth WSOP event of the summer.

Fishman with the Double KO

Level 14 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

The action started with Craig Fishman opening to 4,200 from the cut-off, before Justin Zaki moved all in for 42,500 from the button. McLean Karr was on the big blind, and also moved all in for 64,500, as Fishman went into the tank. A minute passed before he also made the call, covering both players, as all three players then tabled their cards.

Fishman: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}
Zaki: {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}
Karr: {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades}

All three showed a pair, but it was Fishman who’d get lucky, flopping a set on a board of {9-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}, to move to over 200,000 in chips, as two players were sent to the rail.

The Heads-Up Match That Will Never End

Level 14 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

We'd been keeping an eye on Table 434 over the last couple of levels, as Eric Baldwin and Matt Waxman had both been seated there across from one another in seats 2 and 5. Baldwin and Waxman have been spending a lot of time sharing tables at this year's WSOP, starting with their epic heads-up duel to conclude Event #7: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em.

Waxman won that battle to earn his first bracelet and deny Baldwin his second. Since then they've wound up playing against each other in other events, and just now when Table 434 broke they nodded across to one another as they prepared to find their new seats.

"We'll see each other soon again," said Waxman. "I hope so," said Baldwin.

Waxman lingered a moment longer to exchange some small talk with the tourney director before finding his seat, eventually winding his way to the empty 6 seat on Table 438. He hesitated just a moment before sitting down, having spotted the player sitting in seat 5... Baldwin.

They both laughed before commencing yet another battle at the 2013 WSOP.

Steinberg Climbing

Level 14 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

The hand started with the player in the cut-off opening to 4,500, before Max Steinberg raised it to 11,500. He was met with an all in for just under 50,000 in chips, and snap-called as both players tabled their cards.

Steinberg: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}
Opponent: {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}

The board ran out {10-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} to see Steinberg extend his lead over the rest of the field.

Negreanu Makes the Perfect Read, Eriquezzo Makes Better Bluff

Level 14 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Daniel Negreanu is Putting on a Show for the Railbirds Here on Day 2
Daniel Negreanu is Putting on a Show for the Railbirds Here on Day 2

A hand just went down that thrilled the railbirds, and it gave Ryan Eriquezzo's heart a little jolt too.

Playing a heads-up pot against Daniel Negreanu, Eriquezzo responded to an opening raise of 4,300 by "Kid Poker" with a three-bet to 12,200.

"How much more does he want?," Negreanu asked the dealer, before plunking his calling chips into the pot.

Negreanu quickly checked when the {10-Spades}{q-Spades}{2-Clubs} flop hit the board, and Eriquezzo opted for a bet of 11,100. Negreanu was not impressed, however, and he raised it up to 27,100. After Eriquezzo called, the turn came {J-Spades}, and that's when things became interesting.

With the straight and flush draws both getting there on the turn, Negreanu elected to lead out for 31,000, and Eriquezzo immediately moved all in over the top.

"What a dirty card," shot Negreanu, as he clapped the cushion on the table. "That's a pretty sick turn."

Negreanu then asked for a count, and after determining that he would need to risk 65,300 more, he went into the tank to calculate all of the factors evident only to a player like Daniel Negreanu.

"This is so stupid, I might fold the best hand here," he said while mulling his options. "You seem like the type to do that with aces, and the ace of spades."

Eriquezzo sat still as a stone during Negreanu's interrogation, even as a massage attendant dutifully rubbed his back and shoulders, trying his best to avoid giving the hand reading master any additional information.

"I don't think I'm folding here," said Negreanu, continuing an internal monologue but delivering it to an audience of spectators and fellow players. "But, you could have ace-king with a spade, and you'll still get there some of the time."

Eventually, despite it appearing to all the world that Negreanu was poised to call, his hand went soaring into the muck.

"Whew!," said Eriquezzo, exhaling in relief while showing the {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds} for a perfectly executed semi-bluff. "It looked like you were never folding there."

"Nice hand," offered Negreanu, shaking his head seemingly to confirm his initial suspicions, and to chide himself for not pulling the trigger. "I thought you might have something like that."

Waxman Ends Baldwin

Level 14 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Matt Waxman Got the Better of Eric Baldwin in the Latest Encounter
Matt Waxman Got the Better of Eric Baldwin in the Latest Encounter

Matt Waxman opened to 4,000 from under the gun, before Eric Baldwin raised to 9,200 from the big blind. Waxman thought for a minute, before making the call, as both players saw the flop come down {4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}. Baldwin threw out a continuation bet of 8,200, which was called after another short pause from Waxman, as the {A-Diamonds} made its way to the turn.

Baldwin now went into the tank, before throwing out a bet of 21,200, all whilst Waxman was staring him down. With the bet in the middle, Waxman looked over to the board, and made the call, as the {J-Diamonds} completed the board. Baldwin would again think for a minute, before reaching for all his chips, and sliding them into the middle.

Waxman grunted as the bet went into the middle, throwing himself back into his chair.

“What’s wrong with you man?” said Waxman, not too happy about the river bet.

Waxman would again ask Baldwin a question, before repeating his name several times, trying to get an answer or response, as Baldwin sat there motionless.

The tank lasted almost five minutes before Waxman finally made the call as Baldwin tabled his {Q-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}.

“Sorry, I had you,” said Waxman, tabling his {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades} for the nut-flush.

“Wow! I wanted you to call,” said a surprised Baldwin, as he stood up from the table and walked towards the rail.

Waxman sat there raking in the pot, before saying, “I don’t know how he ever has the {Q-Diamonds} there.” “I just had to see his cards.”
