Garry Gates Eliminated in 11th Place ($29,961)

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Garry Gates
Garry Gates

Garry Gates open shoved for his last 260,000 from the hijack, and it folded around to Nicolas Fierro in the big blind. Once he got the official number, he tossed in chips for the call.

Gates: {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}
Fierro: {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

Fierro had woken up with a big hand in the big blind, and Gates was looking to catch a two outer. The board ran down {k-Hearts}{q-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{9-Diamonds}, and Gates busted just short of the unofficial final table. Meanwhile, Fierro is back to over a million chips.

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Allen Cunningham
Allen Cunningham

Peter Hengsakul raised it up to 50,000 in middle position, and Allan Vrooman called from the small blind. Allen Cunningham also called from the big blind, and the flop came down {q-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Spades}. It checked to Hengsakul, and he bet out 75,000. Vrooman folded, but Cunningham elected to check raise it to 170,000. Hengsakul made the call, and the turn was the {2-Diamonds}. Cunningham thought for about 15 seconds before moving all in for 220,000, and Hengsakul snap called.

Hengsakul: {4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}
Cunningham: {q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

Cunningham had flopped top pair, but unfortunately for him, he was drawing dead to the set of Hengsakul. The meaningless river was the {j-Hearts}, and Cunningham bubbled the official final table.

David Nicholson Eliminated in 9th Place ($38,625)

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
David Nicholson - 9th place
David Nicholson - 9th place

Hand #13: Nicolas Fierro opened to 50,000 from under the gun and Jared Hamby made the call from the cutoff to see a {4-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop fall.

Fierro checked and Hamby bet out 62,000 which prompted a fold from Fierro.

Hand #14: Joao Dorneles Neto made it 55,000 and Matt Berkey made the call before David Nicholson moved all in for 203,000 from the button.

Neto mucked but Berkey made the call as the cards were placed on their backs.

Berkey: {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}
Nicholson: {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}

The flop fell {4-Hearts}{10-Spades}{2-Diamonds} to keep Berkey in the lead, and when the {9-Spades} landed on the turn Nicholson would need to spike to stay alive.

Unfortunately for the WSOP Circuit regular, the {4-Diamonds} landed on the river to end his tournament in 9th place for a $38,625 payday.

Hands #23-25 Fred Berger Eliminated in 8th Place ($50,382)

Level 25 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Fred Berger
Fred Berger

Hand #23- Peter Hengsakul made it 75,000 from the button, and Joao Dorneles Neto defended his big blind. The flop came {6-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}, and both players checked. The {7-Diamonds} hit the turn, and Neto fired out 84,000. Hengsakul folded, and Neto took the hand down.

Hand #24- Action folded to Nicolas Fierro on the button, and he raised to 65,000. Richard Dubini called from the big blind, and the flop came {7-Clubs}{j-Spades}{q-Diamonds}. Dubini checked, and Fierro c-bet to 75,000. Dubini quickly folded, and Fierro took down the pot.

Hand #25- Fred Berger made it 80,000 in early position, and Dubini made it 180,000 from the small blind. Berger made the call, and they went heads up to a flop of {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}. Dubini kept up the aggression with a bet of 100,000, and Berger shoved all in, a bet that Dubini quickly called.

Dubini: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}
Berger: {k-Spades}{q-Spades}

Berger was in rough shape, as a queen would do him no good. He was hoping for one of the two kings left in the deck, but the turn was the {6-Diamonds}, and the river the {7-Hearts}. Berger will have to settle for just over $50,000, while Dubini is now up to 1.3 million.

The flop came {2-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}. Hamby fired 50,000, and while Hengaskul folded, Vrooman called. They both checked the {j-Diamonds} on the turn, and the {6-Clubs} on the river. Here were the hands.

Hamby: {10-}{2-}
Dubini: {q-Hearts}{4-Hearts}
Vrooman: mucked

Hamby's flopped two pair was good to take both the side and the main pot to up his stack to 775,000, and Richard Dubini was knocked out in 7th place.

Catching Up With Matt Berkey on Break

Level 26 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Matt Berkey
Matt Berkey

by Pamela Maldonado

Matt Berkey has three World Series of Poker cashes for the 2013 festival including one final table.

He finished third in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em Six-Handed event to collect $199,733. He now sits as one of the six players in the final table of Event No.40: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em, which began on Saturday.

With 12 WSOP cashes and nearly $600,000 in live tournament WSOP earnings, Berkey has a fighting chance to push his way through to victory for his first WSOP bracelet.

During break, we grabbed Berkey to discuss his success at the 2013 WSOP, his online poker history, and his strategy for the final table.

PokerNews: You already have three cashes and one final table, how would you say your summer is going for you?

I don’t want to say better than expected because you always hope for the best but I couldn’t have expected two final tables. Overall I am happy, pleased with my game but of course, you think you could always being doing something more. There is always something you can learn to become a better player. But so far I’m happy.

You were equally successful online as you are live. What is the major difference for you and what adjustments have you had to make?

I actually hate online poker. I’ve been a live player from the beginning and prefer to play live events hands down. As far as adjusting it was complete opposite for me. While everyone had to transition from online to live, I had to make the transition from live to online. This is my home, and this (live) is what I appreciate playing.

Sine you don’t like online poker compared to live, are you still hoping for online poker to come back to the United States?

Oh yea. I say I hate it because I don’t enjoy playing it not because I think it’s bad for the poker economy. It’s fantastic and we need it back desperately. I was one of the ones who was fist pumping a little bit when it went away because I wanted the learning curve to slow down. The new kids weren’t learning as quickly but it didn’t matter because it was just sucking so much money out of the economy that everything else went dry.

Was there any monumental hand that helped you catapult to the final table?

Very early in Day 1, actually. Blinds were like 100/200, it was heads-up and I three-bet {q-}{8-} out of the blinds. We both had like 20,000 and he four-bet small and I called. The flop was {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-} and I checked, he bet 3,500 and I shoved. He called with {J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and I held. He belittled me for the next half hour before he busted. He actually wanted to bet me that I wouldn’t run deep and I wanted to bet my life that I would. I wish I had because look where I am today. It was just a fun situation. Obviously he was the favorite but that’s tournament poker for you.

Hand #52: Nicolas Fierro moved all in from under the gun for 565,000 and collected the blinds and antes.

Hand #53: Matt Berkey moved all in from the cutoff for 355,000 before Jared Hamby moved all in behind him on the button for roughly 1.4 million.

Hamby: {K-Hearts}{J-Clubs}
Berkey: {K-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}

With Berkey trailing, the {J-Spades}{3-Spades}{J-Hearts} rendered him dead to a chop, and when the {6-Diamonds} and {A-Clubs} filled out the turn and river, Berkey was out the door in 6th place.

Hand #63- Allan Vrooman raised to 110,000 from the cutoff, and he picked up the blinds and antes.

Hand #64- Joao Dorneles Neto gets a walk in the big blind.

Hand #65- Peter Hengsakul raised to 100,000 from the cutoff, and Allan Vrooman moved all in for around one million. Hengsakul folded, and Vrooman took down the pot.

Hand #66- Hengsakul made it 100,000 to go from under the gun, and Neto made it 300,000 to go from the button. It got back to Hengsakul, and he made the call after 30 seconds of thought. The flop came {7-Spades}{a-Spades}{3-Hearts}, and Hengsakul checked to Neto, who fired out 250,000. Hengsakul tagged along to see the {5-Spades} hit the turn. This time, Hengsakul led out for an event 500,000, and after a minute of thought, Neto moved all in. Hengsakul snap called.

Hengsakul: {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}
Neto: {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}

Neto's top pair was drawing dead to the flopped set of Hengsakul, and the meaningless river was the {q-Spades}. After collecting that bounty, Hengsakul now owns 2/3 of the chips in play four handed.

Nicolas Fierro Eliminated in 4th Place ($165,501)

Level 27 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Nicolas Fierro is eliminated in 4th place
Nicolas Fierro is eliminated in 4th place

Hand #91: Jared Hamby limped in and Peter Hengsakul checked to see a {4-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} flop fall. Hengsakul bet out 100,000 and won the pot from Hamby.

Hand #92: Allan Vrooman opened under the gun to 200,000 only to have Peter Hengsakul move all in for over 5.5 million from the small blind. Nicolas Fierro called all in for roughly his last 170,000, as Vrooman also called all in for his last 710,000.

Fierro: {A-Clubs}{5-Spades}
Vrooman: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}
Hengsakul: {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}

The {4-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{8-Spades} flop gave Fierro additional outs to a straight, and when the {5-Hearts} landed on the turn he gained a further two outs while Hengsakul found four more.

Unfortunately for both of them the {Q-Spades} would strike on the river to send Vrooman up to over 1.6 million as Fierro headed to the rail in 4th.
