Matt Berkey Background

Matt Berkey was born in Leechburg, Pennsylvania on January 29, 1982. Berkey grew up with hopes of playing baseball professionally, but during his teenage years, he discovered poker. Poker grew in importance for Berkey through high school and college, where he earned a degree in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics from Gannon University.

This growing passion was timed well with the poker boom, allowing Berkey to leave an unsatisfying career at a chemical company and switch to playing poker full-time. He has built a poker career and along the way, founded a coaching site called Solve For Why and in 2021, a poker marketing company with Tim Wheaton called Above The Felt.

Matt Berkey-Doug Polk-Nik Airball Feud

On March 22, 2023, Doug Polk interviewed Nik Airball on the Doug Polk Podcast Youtube channel. During this interview, the pair discussed Airball's attempt to get Matt Berkey to play heads up with him. Airball called Berkey a scammer during the call, while Polk implied that Berkey's training products were poor value for customers. Both Airball and Polk called Berkey out for putting off the heads up match.

Berkey responded publicly to the attacks and poker Twitter amplified all three voices in the feud. Eventually, Berkey played Airball heads up (with Airball receiving coaching from Polk). Berkey won, and he and Airball called a tenuous truce.

Berkey and Polk have both made it clear that they still dislike the other.
