Duhamel Leads Day 1 of The $50,000 Poker Players' Championship

Level 5
Jonathan Duhamel
Jonathan Duhamel

The first five levels of one of the most prestigious events offered at the World Series of Poker are officially in the books. This was the eighth time this event has been offered on the WSOP schedule and it remains a very vocal favorite of the top professional players who participate. With this unique tournament, players are offered the chance to participate in an eight-game mix with very deep stacks in order to get maximum play. After bagging and tagging at the end of the evening, it was none other than 2010 WSOP Main Event champion Jonathan Duhamel to emerge as the biggest stack in the room with 401,300 from the 150,000 starting stack.

Duhamel began his path to the big stack fairly early on in the day when he clashed with Vanessa Selbst in a pot-limit Omaha hand. Both players turned a straight and after getting all of the chips in Selbst quickly found out that Duhamel's was higher. She missed her re-draw outs and Duhamel ended up finishing the hand with a winning full house. This hand crippled Selbst and saw Duhamel vault into one of the top chip positions, which was a status that he never relented as the day progressed. Selbst, on the other hand, was not as fortunate and found herself without chips before the day concluded.

Bagging up the second biggest stack was Jared Bleznick, with two-time WSOP bracelet winner Jason Mercier sitting in third position to end the day. Pot-limit Omaha was also kind to Mercier fairly early on in the day, as a confrontation with Ralph Perry allowed Mercier to gain a very powerful double. The two got it all in after Mercier had flopped top two pair and he was able to hold against Perry's pocket aces. Perry busted soon after but Mercier thrived and finished the day with 340,600.

Last year the first day of play saw just one elimination but this year was a different story. Joining Selbst and Perry on the rail were 10-time WSOP champion Johnny Chan who fell at the hands of Barry Greenstein and Matt Glantz who was eliminated by Calvin Anderson.

Other big stacks returning for Day 2 include Justin Smith (336,600), Brian Rast (319,900), George Lind (294,400), Anderson (290,500), Greg Mueller (261,500), and Mike Leah (248,000). A small sample size of other notable players include Doyle Brunson (232,000) who is playing his first WSOP event of the year, Phil Hellmuth (206,300), Joe Cassidy (198,400) David Bach (198,800), Erick Lindgren (176,000), Daniel Negreanu (127,900), and Scott Seiver (119,400).

Play resumes on Monday at 2:00 p.m. PDT. Be sure to check back here on PokerNews for all of the latest updates from the tournament floor. Until tomorrow!

Johnny Chan Eliminated By Barry Greenstein

Level 5
Barry Greenstein
Barry Greenstein

No-Limit Hold'em

The third elimination of the event has just taken place, as 10-time World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner Johnny Chan has fallen. He was eliminated by Barry Greenstein in stunning set-over-set fashion.

"All in and call," was the announcement from the dealer at the table with a board of {Q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} in the middle. Chan was the player at risk, and he held the {8-Hearts}{8-Spades} for a set of eights. Greenstein had the {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} for top set and the most chips.

The river completed the board with the {4-Hearts}, which was no miracle for Chan, and he was eliminated. That's now three eliminations on the day, whereas last year only David Singer was eliminated on Day 1.

Glantz Falls to Anderson

Level 4
Matt Glantz
Matt Glantz

Pot-Limit Omaha

In 2012 this event only saw one elimination on the first day of play. That number has already been beaten here in 2013 as the second player of the day has fallen.

We arrived at the table just as the cards were being tabled while the flop read {10-Spades}{K-Clubs}{3-Spades}. After a series of raises, Matt Glantz was all in and at risk against Calvin Anderson.

Anderson; {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{2-Spades}
Glantz: {Q-Clubs}{J-Spades}{9-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

Glantz was drawing big but suddenly realized that his spade outs were covered by Anderson's ace-high draw. The turn brought the {2-Clubs} and the {4-Diamonds} finished off the board causing Glantz to miss everything and eliminate him from play. He moved his chips across the table, graciously said "good game," and left the tournament area. Anderson dragged in the pot and now sits on about 220,000.

Mizrachi Turns Full House

Level 4
Michael Mizrachi
Michael Mizrachi

No-Limit Hold'em

We picked up with the action to see Marco Johnson and Michael Mizrachi looking down at a board of {3-Hearts}{J-Spades}{2-Clubs}{2-Hearts}. With about 23,000 already in the middle, Johnson checked over to Mizrachi who fired out 15,000. Johnson tossed out calling chips and the {9-Clubs} struck the river.

Johnson checked again and Mizrachi shuffled some chips on the table for a moment before casually tossing out both of his T25,000 chips for a bet totaling 50,000. Johnson went into the tank for roughly a minute before removing two chips from his own stack and moving them forward.

Mizrachi rolled over {3-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} for deuces full of treys which made Johnson muck his hand. Mizrachi's full house earned him the pot and he now sits at around 215,000 while Johnson was knocked to to roughly 62,000.

Duhamel Doubles Through Selbst in PLO Clash

Level 3
Vanessa Selbst Loses Massive Pot

Pot-Limit Omaha

We arrived at the table in time to see Vanessa Selbst and Jonathan Duhamel looking down at a flop of {6-Spades}{5-Hearts}{3-Spades}. Selbst was in the small blind and fired out 2,000. Duhamel cut out a raise to what looked to be 10,600 after Selbst's original bet was pulled in .

The two headed to the turn and saw the {7-Hearts} hit the felt. Selbst checked and Duhamel fired 14,500. Selbst thought for about 45 seconds before moving out a raise to 68,700. Duhamel did not waste much time before quietly announcing that he was all in.

"Shit," sighed Selbst. Almost immediately after the word left her mouth she moved out a call.

Duhamel: {8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{4-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}
Selbst: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{4-Spades}

Both players had a straight but Duhamel's was higher with a straight to the eight. The river paired the board with the {7-Diamonds} and Duhamel ended the hand with a winning sevens full of fives. Selbst was forced to ship a vast majority of her stack over to Duhamel and now sits on just 44,000 in chips. Duhamel, however, has soared to one of the top stacks in the room with about 290,000 in chips.

Selbst took to Twitter immediately after the hand:

Mercier Claims Most of Perry's Stack

Level 2
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

Pot-Limit Omaha

We came upon a huge PLO hand brewing between Jason Mercier and Ralph Perry. They'd reached a {5-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop and there was already a big pot developed with Perry having fired a bet into it. Mercier had raised all in with his entire stack, and after tanking quite some time Perry decided to call, thus building a total pot of more than 300,000.

Mercier had {Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{10-Spades}{5-Spades} for top two pair while Perry had {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{5-Clubs} for aces. The turn was the {4-Hearts} and river the {J-Clubs}, and Mercier had suddenly scored a big double as they near the end of Level 2. Meanwhile, Perry will be going to the dinner break with less than 30,000.

Brunson's Bets

Doyle Brunson Begins The Hunt For Bracelet #11
Doyle Brunson Begins The Hunt For Bracelet #11

The buzz around the tournament floor today has mostly surrounded Doyle Brunson's decision to play this event. This has been the only event on the 2013 World Series of Poker schedule that Texas Dolly has played and despite his quiet demeanor, his presence in the room is well-known. Prior to playing this event, the 79-year old gambling legend sent out a series of tweets that sweetened the deal for him playing in this event. Brunson has bets with 28 players that see him earning extra money if he cashes, makes the final table, and/or wins the tournament.

Doyle BrunsonI figure to lose money on my bets in the 50k but if I go deep, there will be lots of blood on the carpet. Lose a little, but can win a lot!
Doyle BrunsonTime closing in on the 50k. I've got so many bets my head is spinning. These young guys evidently think I can't compete.#wewillseeCHIPREESE
Doyle BrunsonTotal 28 bets.Not as high as it seems. Total of 800k. Seems like a lot, but bets are to cash, final table, win.#lotsofactionforasickolike me
Doyle BrunsonIf I lose (and I'm a fav to lose) I will lose between 80K-140k. But if I win, I could win up to 800k maximum. Hoping to at least cash.#gulp

Since the inception of this event, Brunson has cashed twice and made the final table during one of those runs. In 2006, which was the inaugural year, Brunson scored an eighth-place finish which was good for $274,560. Two years later, Brunson finished in 16th place which pocketed him $124,320. Brunson has not cashed in this event since.

Could these bets fuel the fire within Brunson to propel him into a deep run? Only time will tell, but we'll certainly keep tabs on his progress throughout one of the most prestigious poker tournaments of the year.

Day 1 of the $50K Poker Players' Championship Awaits

Michael Mizrachi holds aloft the David "Chip" Reese Trophy after winning his second $50,000 Poker Players' Championship in 2012

Welcome to Event #55: $50,000 Poker Players' Championship, the tournament that combines a high buy-in with a variety of different disciplines to occupy a special place on the WSOP schedule. This marks the eighth year the WSOP has included the prestigious $50K tourney, with the tournament consistently proving one of the most compelling of the summer thanks to the always tough fields it attracts.

It began in 2006 as a $50K H.O.R.S.E. event, with the late David "Chip" Reese memorably prevailing over a 143-player field in a tournament that concluded with an especially lengthy heads-up battle with Andy Bloch. With Reese's passing late the following year, the memory of his win and the Poker Hall of Famer's important contributions to poker have been preserved with the awarding of the David "Chip" Reese Trophy to each year's winner of the $50K event.

It remained a H.O.R.S.E. tourney for the next three years, with Freddy Deeb, Scotty Nguyen, and David Bach each earning titles. Then in 2010 the format was expanded to cover eight different games — 2-7 triple draw, limit hold'em, Omaha-8, razz, stud, stud-8, no-limit hold'em, and pot-limit Omaha.

Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi won the first "8-game mix" version of the event in 2010, newly dubbed the "Poker Players' Championship." Brian Rast would win in 2011, then Mizrachi would come back to earn a second title in the event last year.
