Mark Darner Leads Event #57 at the End of Day 1; Timothy Reilly Second

Level 10 : 400/800, 100 ante
Timothy Reilly: Second in chips going into Day 2
Timothy Reilly: Second in chips going into Day 2

Event #57 of the 2013 World Series of Poker, the $5,000 No Limit Hold’em tournament, attracted 784 players to the Brasilia Room and at the end of 10 60-minute levels only 252 of those who started had chips to bag and tag. The title of overnight chip leader goes to Mark Darner who turned his 15,000 starting stack into an impressive 222,700.

Darner flew under the radar for the majority of Day 1, but he will be firmly in our sights on Wednesday’s Day 2. Darner, a Florida native, is looking for his second cash of the series, having finished 16th in Event #9 ($3,000 No Limit Hold’em Shootout). Should Darner reach the money in this event — 81 places are paid – it would be Darner’s third cash at the WSOP in his career.

As you would expect from a tournament costing $5,000 to buy into, Event #57 saw some of the biggest names in poker take part. Timothy Reilly (154,200), Philipp Gruissem (143,800), Matt Perrins (142,500), Sam Trickett (116,000) and Antonio Esfandiari (97,000) each had good days at the felt and enter Day 2 with sizable stacks.

Some of the notables who did not fare as well and busted during proceedings included Christopher Brammer, Chris Moorman, Jonathan Aguiar, Elio Fox, David “Bakes” Baker, Sorel Mizzi, Marvin Rettenmaier, Yevgeniy Timoshenko and the legendary Phil Ivey.

Day 2 commences at 1p.m Las Vegas time sharp, and continues until 10 60-minute levels have been played. Join the PokerNews Live Reporting Team from 1 p.m on Wednesday as Event #57 plays through the money bubble and towards the final table.

When we arrived there was 1,125 in front of Jeremy Ausmus who was seated in the cut off position. His opponent, a player in middle position, made the four bet to 2,675 and Ausmus made the call. The {3-Clubs}{4-Spades}{4-Diamonds} flop was the ignition for more action as a 2,025 continuation-bet followed from the player in middle position. Ausmus shoved all in for 12,975 total and his opponent snap called.

Ausmus showed {6-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for a gutshot and he was up against {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}. The {8-Diamonds} on the turn didn't do Ausmus any good but the {5-Clubs} on the river did.

Hebden KO's Rubie; Now Sits with 100k

Level 4 : 100/200, 0 ante
Brendon Rubie (from Event #2)
Brendon Rubie (from Event #2)

Following a raise to 400, Amnon Filippi called in the cutoff along with Brendon Rubie and Kory Kilpatrick from the button and small blind. With the action on Elliot Hebden in the big, he made it 1,900 to force the initial raiser out as Filippi tossed in a call.

Rubie contemplated for nearly a minute before moving all in for his last 11,075 to force Kilpatrick's cards into the muck. Hebden shoved and Filippi mucked his {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds} face up.

Rubie: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Hebden: {K-Clubs}{K-Spades}

With Rubie in desperate need to find a case ten to stay alive, the {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} board would see him fall to the rail as Hebden stacked his chips to sit at just under 100,000.

Olivier Busquet: "What the F*ck?"

Level 2 : 50/100, 0 ante

We picked up the action on a {5-Spades}{5-Hearts}{8-Clubs} flop as Olivier Busquet bet out 800 in, what appeared to be, a pot worth 1,650 already. Busquet was acting out of the big blind and his opponent was seated on the button. Busquet received a call and the {A-Spades} came on the turn. Both players decided to check and the {6-Clubs} fell on the river. Busquet checked to his opponent who bet 1,600. Busquet was zoned out and was looking straight ahead, almost like he wasn't totally there. Then all of the sudden he reached for chips and made it 5,600 to go. His opponent wasn't impressed it seemed and within fifteen seconds he had pushed all in.

"What the F*ck?" asked Busquet quietly but with a sincere voice. Busquet didn't ask for a count but it didn't appear to be much more than the 5,600 Busquet had already in there. Eventually we counted 9,700 total, so just 4,100 more. Busquet thought about it for about half a minute, before tossing in some green 25 chips to indicate the call.

"Good call" said the player on the button who showed {7-Spades}{10-Spades}. Busquet tabled {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for a rivered straight and grabbed the valuable chips and started stacking them.

A Prestigious One Awaits

Cards & Chips

The Main Event is looming but there are still more than enough other interesting tournaments to rail, and more than enough money to be made. Today at noon the $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em tournament starts, one of those tournaments you don't want to miss.

Last year 1,001 players registered for event 50. Do you remember that final table? Kyle Julius and Dan Smith got to the three handed part of the tournament but couldn't close the deal. Peter Vilandos eventually won the bracelet and the $952,694 first prize.

Every player starts with 15,000 in chips today and the first hour the players will be playing with blinds of 50 and 75. This tournament is structured as a four day event so the plan is to play ten levels on day one till three.

Check back at noon for updates. In the meantime, check Kristy Arnett's update:
