Limits Go Up, Action Slows Down

Level 24 : 20,000/40,000, 0 ante

Hands #94-#102

The start of a new level and the increase in limits had an immediate effect, as the first eight hands of the level — two whole orbits — saw no hand reach the first draw, with a couple of big blind walks and a half-dozen raise-and-takes.

Finally a hand arose in which David Chiu raised from the small blind and Brian Brubaker defended his big blind with a call. Chiu took two and Brubaker three, Chiu bet and Brubaker called. Both then took one on the second draw, with Chiu once more betting and Brubaker once more calling.

The third draw saw Chiu standing pat and Brubaker taking one card. Both checked, Chiu showed {9-}{8-}{7-}{5-}{4-}, and Brubaker mucked.

David Chiu Knows What You Have

Level 23 : 15,000/30,000, 0 ante

Hands #92-#93

David Chiu raised under the gun, and Brian Brubaker reraised on the button. Chiu called, then drew two, while Brubaker drew one. Chiu check raised Brubaker, and he called. Both players stood pat, and Chiu elected to check call this time. Both players patted again, and Chiu looked down for about 20 seconds before betting out.

Brubaker let out a quick sigh, shook his head, then called. Chiu said "you got eight-seven right," as he confidently fanned out {8-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{2-}. Brubaker gave Chiu a bit of a nod before mucking his hand, and Chiu took down the pot.

The Final Four Pass the Chips Around

Level 23 : 15,000/30,000, 0 ante
Eli Elezra
Eli Elezra

Hands #84-#91

These eight hands saw five of them end quietly before the first draw, and Daniel Negreanu win another prior to the showdown.

Another hand saw Negreanu raising from the button, Chiu three-betting from the big blind, and Negreanu calling. Chiu then drew one card three times, while Negreanu drew one and stood pat thereafter. All three betting rounds saw Chiu check-calling Negreanu's bets.

Negreanu then showed {8-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-}, better than Chiu's {8-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{2-}, and Negreanu scooped the pot.

The last hand of the sequence was a three-way hand between Eli Elezra, Chiu, and Negreanu in which each only contributed three small bets, with no further betting after the last two draws. Elezra then showed {J-}{7-}{6-}{5-}{2-}, good enough to win.

Brubaker Takes a Big One

Level 23 : 15,000/30,000, 0 ante
Brian Brubaker
Brian Brubaker

Hands #76-83

There were a handful of hands that were either walks or simple raise and take, but Brian Brubaker took down the one big pot in this group. David Chiu raised under the gun, and he was called by Brubaker on the button, and Eli Elezra in the big blind. Everyone drew two, and it was checked to Brubaker, who bet out. Both players called, and while Elezra and Chiu both drew two, Brubaker patted. It was checked to Brubaker again, who fired out, and Chiu was the lone caller.

Chiu drew one at the end, and both players checked. Brubaker showed {8-}{7-}{5-}{3-}{2-}, and that was good enough to drag the pot.

A Number Two for Chiu

Level 23 : 15,000/30,000, 0 ante
David Chiu

Hands #72-#75

This sequence started with Negreanu winning a blind-vs.-blind hand against Brian Brubaker. Then David Chiu took a hand off of Eli Elezra, betting the latter out of the hand after the second draw.

The third hand saw Brubaker and Negreanu again battling one another, with Brubaker raising from under the gun, Negreanu three-betting from the button, and Brubaker calling. Both took two and checked, then Brubaker took one, Negreanu two, and Brubaker bet and Negreanu called.

The third draw saw Brubaker standing pat and Negreanu taking one, then Negreanu called his opponent's bet. Brubaker showed {8-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-}, barely better than Negreanu's {8-}{6-}{5-}{3-}{2-}, and won the pot.

Brubaker was involved again on the next hand versus David Chiu, another blinds battle. Chiu raised (SB) and Brubaker called, then Chiu took three and Brubaker one. Chiu check-called a bet from Brubaker, then on the second draw Chiu took two and Brubaker one. Both checked.

The third draw saw Chiu standing pat and Brubaker taking one card. Chiu checked, Brubaker bet, Chiu check-raised, and Brubaker called. Chiu showed {7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-} (a number two), better than Brubaker's {8-}{7-}{6-}{5-}{2-}, and Chiu claimed the chips.

Chiu Adds a Few, Negreanu Nabs One

Level 23 : 15,000/30,000, 0 ante

Hands #64-#68

It was a good orbit for David Chiu, who won three of the five hands. Eli Elezra won one of the others versus Brian Brubaker, and the final hand of the sequence involved Elezra again battling with Daniel Negreanu.

That one saw Negreanu raising from the small blind and Elezra calling from the big blind. Negreanu would draw two, then one, then one again, while Elezra took three, then two, then one.

After all three draws Negreanu bet and Elezra called. "I made an eight," said Elezra after the last call, to which Negreanu responded "I beat you." He then showed his {8-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-}. "A number five," Negreanu added as Elezra mucked.

Baker Gets Near Double Through Elezra

Level 23 : 15,000/30,000, 0 ante

Eli Elezra raised it up under the gun, and David "ODB" Baker three bet it from the button. Elezra called, and both players drew two cards. Elezra check called a bet, and Elezra drew two, while Baker drew one. Elezra again check called a bet from Baker, who had just 10,000 behind him. Both players drew one, and they both checked.

Baker showed {q-}{7-}{5-}{3-}{2-}, and Elezra fanned out {8-}{4-}{3-}{2-}. He told Baker that he had paint, and he began to sweat the card. If it was a jack, Baker would be all but out of the tournament, but it was a {k-}, giving Baker the crucial pot.

A Couple for Brubaker, One for Chiu

Level 23 : 15,000/30,000, 0 ante

Hands #54-#57

On the first hand back from the break, Brian Brubaker raised from under the gun, David Chiu three-bet from the small blind, and Brubaker called.

Chiu took one card then stood pat on the next two, while Brubaker drew two cards twice, then stood pat on the end. Chiu led with bets after the first two draws, both called by Brubaker, then both checked after the third draw.

Brubaker showed {9-}{6-}{5-}{3-}{2-}. "Nine is good," said Chiu as he mucked.

David "ODB" Baker raised from the small blind on the next hand and won, then it was Chiu raising from the cutoff, Negreanu reraising from the big blind, and Chiu calling.

Negreanu stood pat throughout all three draws on this one, while it was Chiu drawing two cards twice, then standing pat. Negreanu bet on all three opportunities, and Chiu called each time.

Negreanu tabled {8-}{7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}, but Chiu had caught up and passed him with {8-}{7-}{5-}{4-}{2-} to win the pot.

Brubaker then picked up another hand with a button raise.
