Steve Sung - Day 1 chip leader

The first day of Event #34: $1,500 Seven-Card Stud has wrapped up play and it is Steve Sung who has come out on top of the chip counts after winning a big pot late in the evening with a full house. A total of 345 players came out to try their hand at the only Seven-Card Stud Hi tournament of the year at the 2014 WSOP. Sung would end play with a stack of 69,000 and he was followed closely by Will Thompson (67,500), and recent New Orleans WSOP Circuit Main Event winner Bryan Campanello (63,300) who joked that he was "playing like a world champion."

Other notables to survive include Brian Hastings (58,500), John D'Agostino (55,100), Bryn Kenney (45,000), Marcel Luske (38,500), Daniel Negreanu (31,000), Cyndy Violette (30,000), Phil Laak (22,000), Robert Mizrachi (17,600), and Barry Greenstein (11,800). Two of the more interesting stories of the day were the tales of music mogul Steve Albini who would end the day with a healthy stack of 43,800 and 1983 Ladies' Seven Card Stud winner Carolyn Gardner who finds herself with a comfortable stack of 53,800.

Reigning champion of the 2013 $2,500 Seven-Card Stud tournament, David Chiu, was eliminated early on along with other notables that included Phil Ivey, Jeff Lisandro, Ted Forrest, Greg Mueller, Eli Elezra, Jeff Madsen, John Monnette, Bertrand Grospellier, Barbara Enright, and Fabrice Soulier.

The remaining 60 players will return at 2 p.m. later today with their eyes on the $118,785 first place prize. As always, PokerNews will be there to bring you all the coverage. Tune in and see who becomes the next Seven-Card Stud Champion!

We got to the table with a massive pot sitting in the middle and Steve Sung led out for a bet on seventh street after his two opponents checked. They both called and would muck their hands when Sung turned over [KhTk3k] for threes full of kings. That pot brought Sung's stack to approximately 65,000 and to the top of the chip counts as play is coming to a close for the day.

A Blast From The Past

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 0 ante
Carolyn Gardner
Carolyn Gardner

Back before no limit hold 'em became the game of choice for tournament poker, there was a Ladies' Seven Card Stud tournament at the WSOP. This event ran from 1977 through 1999 before it moved away from being strictly Seven Card Stud. The winner of this event in 1983 was none other than Carolyn Gardner who would take home $16,000 that day for her win.

Gardner is here having a good time, laughing it up with the players, and stacking their chips in the process. She has 49,000 in chips with a little less than an hour left to play. She's had plenty of deep runs in Stud tournaments so she has experience on her side.

Calvin Anderson Back At It

A little more than two hours ago, Calvin Anderson was winning his first WSOP bracelet in Event #30: $1,500 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low. He's in action here looking to replicate that success.

When asked why he wasn't out celebrating, Calvin said "I don't drink and my girlfriend isn't here so I'd rather just play poker." It's no wonder Anderson does so well with that kind of dedication.

Phil Ivey: {X-}{X-}/{2-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{3-Clubs}/{X-}

A short-stacked Phil Ivey was all in before fourth street and John Monnette and two others built a side pot that Monnette would take down when he tabled {A-Hearts}{8-Spades}{7-Spades} for aces and sevens. Seat 2 flashed a king for kings and deuces while Seat 3 mucked. Ivey took one last look at his cards and quietly slid them into the center. He stood up and said "alright see you" and headed out of the Amazon Room.

Like Father, Like Son

Level 5 : 200/400, 0 ante
John Cernuto Jr. and John Cernuto
John Cernuto Jr. and John Cernuto

John Cernuto Sr., better known as "Miami John," is celebrating a very special Father's Day as he is here with his son, John Jr. The resemblance is uncanny and both are taking their shot at this $1,500 Seven-Card Stud event. The elder Cernuto has an impressive WSOP resume that includes 57 cashes and three bracelets.

While his son might not have the same name recognition or experience, he definitely has a great mentor and teacher in his Dad. Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there - thank you for all that you do!

Doug Lee: {X-}{X-}/{8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{4-Hearts}/{X-}

We get to the table on sixth street and Doug Lee has made a bet. Allen Kessler tossed out a call and their last cards were dealt face down. Lee bet again and Kessler grabbed the call, sat it in front of Lee and said "here's another 200 for you."

Lee turned over {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{6-Spades} for an eight high straight. Kessler moaned a bit about his luck... "I had a royal flush draw," he said, turning over {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} for aces and queens. A player at the table cracked a joke and asked Kessler if he would rather hit a royal flush in this tournament or in video poker. Kessler didn't answer but it's probably a safe assumption to say he'd prefer the latter.

Singer Loses Some

David Singer: {X-}{X-}/{K-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{3-Spades}/{X-}
Opponent: {X-}{X-}/{2-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{8-Spades}/{X-}

We got to the table with David Singer having called a bet on fifth street. He did the same on sixth street. He would check on seventh and his opponent would check behind him and turn over {K-Spades}{6-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} for two pair, sixes and twos. Singer mucked but he's still sitting with a stack slightly bigger than what he started the day with.

David Singer came into play today with 36 WSOP cashes and one bracelet. When he won his bracelet in 2008 in Pot Limit Hold 'Em, he was widely considered as one of the best to not have won a bracelet. Singer has been quiet the last few years, with only six cashes since 2011, but he's been seen at several events here of late looking to re-emerge on the poker tournament scene.

Barbara Enright, best known for being the only woman to ever make the final table of the WSOP Main Event is among the few that have sat down in the last 15 or so minutes. She has three bracelets to her name, including two in Limit Seven-Card Stud and in looking at her tournament successes, many of them have come in this variant so it wouldn't be a surprise to see her make a deep run here.
