A Big One For Brunson

Level 17 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Todd Brunson
Todd Brunson

We caught the action on fifth street between Nikolay Losev and Todd Brunson when the latter had bet. Losev tanked for a bit and called after which Brunson bet again on sixth. This time, Losev raised and Brunson called.

On seventh street, Brunson checked again and Losev bet. Brunson called and the showdown occurred:

Losev: {X-}{X-} / {5-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{9-Spades}{Q-Spades} / {X-}
Brunson: {X-}{X-} / {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{7-Spades} / {X-}

Losev tabled {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} for two pair and that was no good against Brunson's {J-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Clubs} for a bigger two pair combination.

No Money for Soulier

Level 17 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Fabrice Soulier
Fabrice Soulier

Fabrice Soulier has not managed to cash in this event because he just ran into Vladimir Schemelev's full house. On third street, Schemelev had the bring-in and Soulier completed. The action folded back to the Russian and he called. On fifth street, Soulier bet with a pair of queens showing and Schemelev raised. Soulier reraised and Schemelev called.

On sixth Soulier checked, Schemelev bet, Soulier raised all in and the Russian pro called.

Schemelev: {J-Hearts}{4-Clubs} / {4-Spades}{J-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} / {3-Diamonds}
Soulier: {Q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} / {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{6-Clubs} / {K-Diamonds}

Soulier seemed livid after Schemelev turned over his full house and the Frenchman ultimately failed to turn his three of a kind into a bigger full house.

"This is not real!" Soulier cried out. "You play great, Vlad, you play great. You play great, just like Todd," Soulier added sarcastically.

After a pause, Soulier found out he still had some chips left and he said, "What were you thinking?" before settling down.

Ultimately, Soulier lasted two more hands before he hit the rail in 19th place.

Benson Eliminated in 18th Place; It's Bubble Time

Level 17 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Gary Benson
Gary Benson

Gary Benson: {X-}{X-} / {A-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{5-Clubs} / {X-}
Matt Grapenthien: {X-}{X-} / {3-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{2-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} / {X-}
Todd Brunson: {X-}{X-} / {6-Spades}{9-Spades}{5-Hearts}{A-Clubs} / {X-}

Benson led with a bet on fourth street, and then Matt Grapenthien called before Todd Brunson raised. Benson called all in for 7,000 total, and Grapenthien also called the raise.

On fifth and sixth streets, Grapenthien check-called bets from Brunson before everyone received seventh street face down. Grapenthien checked, and Brunson checked behind.

Brunson showed the {J-Spades}{4-Spades}{6-Diamonds} for a pair of sixes. Grapenthien mucked to give Brunson the side pot, and then Benson showed the {K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} before sweating his last card. Benson needed an ace, king, queen, jack, ten, or six to stay alive, but he pulled the {5-Diamonds} and made the only pair he couldn't win with.

With that, Brunson moved to nearly 600,000 in chips while the rest of the tournament fell to the bubble.

Ashby Gets Shorter

Level 17 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

On fifth street, Richard Ashby bet and Nikolay Losev called. On sixth and seventh, both players checked.

Losev: {X-}{X-} / {5-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{J-Hearts}{3-Clubs} / {X-}
Ashby: {Q-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{7-Spades}{8-Hearts} / {X-}

"No pair," Ashby said.

Losev showed {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} and for a second Ashby thought the Russian had just ace-ten high. Ashby showed ace-queen high but his opponent had a pair.

Schemelev Gets Shorter

Level 17 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

Vladimir Schemelev had the bring in and Barry Greenstein raised from his left. Steve Landfish called and on Schemelev called as well. On fourth street Greenstein checked, Landfish bet and Schemelev called. Greenstein folded and on fifth Landfish won the pot when he bet again.

Landfish: {J-Hearts}{X-} / {K-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}
Schemelev: {X-}{X-} / {3-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{10-Clubs}fold
Greenstein: {X-}{X-} / {A-Spades}{7-Diamonds}fold

Landfish showed that he had three of a kind and added that he wouldn't dare to bluff.

On the next hand Schemelev completed and Greenstein raised. Schemelev called and on check-called a bet on fourth. On fifth street Greenstein bet again and Schemelev folded.

Schemelev: {X-}{X-} / {5-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{2-Hearts}fold
Greenstein: {X-}{X-} / {9-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}

Ashby Doubles

Level 17 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante

Richard Ashby: {X-}{X-} / {Q-Clubs}{10-Spades}fold
Matt Grapenthien: {X-}{X-} / {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}

After Ashby completed the bet on third street, Grapenthien raised from the next seat. Action folded back to Ashby, and he called to see fourth street. Grapenthien bet double after he paired up with nines showing, and then Ashby tank-folded.

A couple hands later, the following hand happened to give Ashby the double up he was looking for:

Ashby: {Q-Clubs}{4-Spades} / {Q-Hearts}{3-Spades}{5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} / {J-Clubs}
Grapenthien: {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} / {10-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{A-Hearts} / {J-Diamonds}

After Ashby completed the bet, Grapenthien raised behind him once again — and once again showing a lower card than Ashby was. Action folded back to Ashby, and he called. On fifth street, Ashby checked, Grapenthien bet, Ashby raised, Grapenthien reraised, and Ashby called all in.

Grapenthien was ahead with a pair of kings to Ashby's pair of queens. Ashby's board then ran out such that he made queens and fives. Grapenthien stayed with just a pair of kings after hi run out, and Ashby doubled up.

Cummings Triples Up

Level 17 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Oxana Cummings
Oxana Cummings

Oxana Cummings: {X-}{X-} / {6-Hearts}{7-Spades}{A-Spades}{A-Clubs} / {X-}
James Obst: {X-}{X-} / {7-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} / {X-}
Ben Yu: {X-}{X-} / {2-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} / {X-}

Yu was the bring-in, and action folded around to Cummings. She completed all in for 3,500, and then Obst raised to 8,500. Yu called.

On fourth street, Yu led with a bet, and Obst called. Then on fifth street, Obst did the betting with Yu calling. Both Obst and Yu then checked seventh street.

Obst couldn't beat Yu's {K-Spades}{8-Spades}{4-Diamonds} for two pair and mucked his hand, giving Yu the side pot. Cummings showed the {K-Hearts}{6-Spades}{5-Hearts} for a better two pair and she scooped the main pot to triple up.
