Tim Stansifer Leads Advancing Field From Day 2a/b

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Tim Stansifer Bags Chip Lead
Tim Stansifer Bags Chip Lead

Day 2a/b is of the 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event is officially in the books with Tim Stansifer leading the roughly 700 survivors from the two returning flights. Stansifer sat atop the chip counts late in the day and had a surge during the last few hands to boost his stack up to a massive 481,500.

This second day was a unique experience at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, as survivors from Day 1a and Day 1b remained segregated for their second day of play. While play occurred simultaneously, those to advance from Day 1a played their flight in the Amazon Room while the returning players from the larger Day 1b flight took to the Brasilia and Pavilion rooms.

Stansifer sits atop the chip counts moving forward onto Day 3, but has has other players close on his heels. Tom Cannuli bagged up the second largest stack with 407,800 and none other than Joe Kuether put third-place chips in the bag with 401,200. Kuether found a spot among the leaders roughly halfway through the day and sat there ever since. Kuether, who has over $2.13 million in lifetime career tournament earnings has never cashed in a Las Vegas WSOP Main Event. He has, however, racked up 24 WSOP cashes including a 24th place in the 2012 WSOP Europe Main Event and a third place in a $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em event in 2012 for over $218,000.

Martin Jacobson, who began Day 2a/b as the chip leader, also bagged up a top five stack by the end of the day. Jacobson continued to ride his momentum and will return for Day 3 with 342,700 in chips.

Joining those big stacks on Day 3 are the likes of Antonio Esfandiari (277,800), Abe Mosseri (260,500), Eric Cloutier (236,000), 2003 WSOP Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker (222,000), Faraz Jaka (195,000), Ole Schemion (180,900), Marvin Rettenmaier (173,200), Erik Seidel (130,600), Allen Cunningham (114,400), 1996 WSOP Main Event champion Huck Seed (96,500), and reigning champion Ryan Riess (84,900).

While those players progressed onto the next stage of this prestigious tournament, others fell before the bagging phase at the end of the day. Some of the players who were eliminated by the end of Day 2a/b include 2012 WSOP Main Event champion Greg Merson, Josh Arieh, Mike Sexton, Dennis Phillips, November Niner Michiel Brummelhuis, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Amanda Musumeci, Vanessa Selbst, Annette Obrestad, and Igor Kurganov. Brandon Shack-Harris and George Danzer, who sit in the one and two spots in the WSOP Player of the Year race, were also eliminated from play.

The Main Event continues on Wednesday where players will hit the felt for Day 2c play. As always, PokerNews will be on hand to provide all of the latest from the tournament felt.

No Day 3 For Kurganov

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Igor Kurganov
Igor Kurganov

German super star Igor Kurganov has just been knocked out by the hands of Floris van der Ven. The action started with a raise to 2,700 from early position and Floris van der Ven three-bet to 7,200 from the player's left. Kurganov was next to act and he four-bet shoved for 35,700.

The action folded all the way around to Van der Ven and he quickly made the call.

Van der Ven: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}
Kurganov: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}

The board ran out {10-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{4-Spades} and Kurganov was knocked out.

Obrestad Eliminated in Cruel Fashion

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Annette Obrestad - Eliminated
Annette Obrestad - Eliminated

David Farber raised from middle position, Annette Obrestad called on the button and Garrett Greer defended his big blind.

The flop came down {10-Hearts}{8-Spades}{6-Hearts} and action checked to Obrestad. She bet 3,700, Greer check-called, Farber check-raised to 11,500 and Obrestad reraised all in for 48,600. After Greer folded, Farber went into the tank for about 30 seconds before he called.

Farber: {J-Diamonds}{J-Spades}
Obrestad: {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}

Obrestad was well out in front with a ten-high straight to Farber's overpair, but the {6-Spades} turn gave him a few outs to a full house.

Sure enough, the {J-Clubs} landed on the river, giving Farber jacks full of sixes to end Obrestad's Main Event.

Farber, meanwhile, is up to about 185,000.

POY Leaders Shack-Harris and Danzer Exit

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Brandon Shack-Harris
Brandon Shack-Harris

According to their respective Twitter accounts, 2014 World Series of Poker Player of the Year leaders Brandon Shack-Harris (752.00) and George Danzer (745.20) have been eliminated.

OscillatorTiming problems today. Shoved Tens into Jacks FTL. GG WSOP. Gl all

George DanzerGood game. Wieder in Top Full reingeblufft. Jetzt irgendwie auch erleichtert.

Google Translate tells us that Danzer's tweet has something to do with "buffing," and that he's "somehow relieved."

Busting shy of the money, neither player will be able to add to their point total in Las Vegas. There is, of course, the World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific in Melbourne, Australia, which kicks off on Oct. 2. The series, which features 10 bracelet events, culminated with the AU$10,000 Main Event on Oct. 13, and the AU$25,000 High Roller on Oct. 15.

Here is the current POY leader board:

Slow and Steady Wins the Race: An Orbit With Day 1a Chip Leader Martin Jacobson

Level 7 : 300/600, 75 ante
Martin Jacobson
Martin Jacobson

Martin Jacobson is a regular on the European Poker Tour, finishing second (twice) and fourth in EPT Main Events in 2010 and 2011 alone. Last year, the Swede reached the final table of the One Drop High Roller, finishing in sixth for $807,427, and altogether he has over $4.8 million in career live tournament earnings.

Jacobson entered Day 2a as the chip leader in this contained area of the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, but he doesn't seem to be getting out of line or playing like a maniac. After all, since 2007, Day 1 chip leaders haven't had the greatest success:

Brett CollsonSince 2007 only 14 out of 26 @WSOP #MainEvent Day 1 chip leaders have made the money. Two reached the final table: @BenbaLamb and @cada99.

In a recent orbit at his table, we witnessed the Swede's patience.

Hand #1: Jacobson started the orbit with 244,800 chips and the button, and the action folded to him. He raised to 1,400, and received no callers.

Hand #2: The action folded to Jacobson, who folded as well.

Hands #3-6: There were no opens or limps in front of Jacobson, and he chose to fold four more times.

Hand #7: Jacobson was the first player to act, and he raised to 1,500. Two players called - one in the cutoff and another out of the big blind - and the flop fell {4-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{7-Hearts}. The player in the big blind checked, Jacobson bet 2,500, and only the player in the cutoff called. The turn was the {10-Spades}, Jacobson checked, and his opponent fired out 4,000. Jacobson folded.

Hand #8: The action folded to the player on Jacobson's right, and he raised to 1,500 out of the small. Jacobson called, then folded to a bet on a flop of {a-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}.

Hand #9: Jacobson raised to 1,800 out of the small blind, and David Gorr surrendered his big blind.

In the end, Jacobson had 240,275 chips, a little less than eight big blinds short of what he started the orbit with.

2013 November Niner Michiel Brummelhuis Eliminated

Michiel Brummelhuis (Day 1b)
Michiel Brummelhuis (Day 1b)

Picking up the action after the river of a {5-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{5-Spades}{7-Hearts} board with about 20,000 in the pot, Greg Himmelbrand checked to Michiel Brummelhuis who shoved for about 17,000. Himmelbrand tanked for about 60 seconds before he called, and Brummelhuis tapped the table and said, "Good call."

Himmelbrand tabled {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}, while Brummelhuis showed {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}.

"That's exactly what I was trying to get you to fold," said Brummelhuis.

Himmelbrand collected the chips while Brummelhuis wished the players at the table good luck before making his exit.

Dawley Done In

Jessica Dawley - Eliminated
Jessica Dawley - Eliminated

Theo Tran raised in early position, a player on his left called, and Jessica Dawley put in a three-bet near the button. Tran four-bet, the action folded back to Dawley who moved all in, and Tran called.

Tran: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Dawley: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

Dawley was in great shape to double, until she was drawing dead on a flop of {3-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}. The turn ({2-Diamonds}) and river ({3-Diamonds}) were both meaningless, and Dawley hit the rail.

Tran is up to 68,000 chips.

The Mouth Sewn Shut

Level 7 : 300/600, 75 ante
Scott Waltenburg (L) & Mike Matusow
Scott Waltenburg (L) & Mike Matusow

Scott Waltenburg, who hails from Northbrook, Illinois, opened the action with a raise and Mike "The Mouth" Matusow called from middle position. The rest of the players folded and it was heads-up action to the {2-Spades}{10-Hearts}{7-Clubs} flop.

Waltenburg proceeded to check-call a bet before checking the {9-Spades} turn. Matusow took the opportunity to move all in for his last 12,000 or so, and he didn't seem too excited when Waltenburg announced a call.

Matusow: {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Waltenburg: {10-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

Matusow had picked a bad time to shove, but he still had outs as either a jack, ace or eight would give him the win. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {K-Clubs}. It was a blank for Matusow, and the usually boisterous player ended his 2014 WSOP by wishing the table luck and exiting the tournament area.
