Turner Pursues First Bracelet as Trigeorgis Bags the Lead After Day 1 of the $2,500 Mixed Triple Draw

Level 10 : 1,000/2,000, 0 ante
Jon Turner
Jon Turner

It's been 13 years since Jon Turner notched his first WSOP cash in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em event. Turner currently boasts 57 cashes for over $1.2 million but there's one thing that's missing on his stellar CV: the elusive bracelet. He has 14 top 10 finishes to his name including three from the Circuit. Yet he's never made it to the summit.

But Turner is pushing as hard as he can as he demonstrated on Day 1 of the $2,500 Mixed Triple Draw event early on in this year's World Series. Turner navigated through the first 10 hours of play to bag 91,100, putting his name near the top of the leaderboard of the 321-strong field.

With tons of live poker experience in addition to the $8 million he's won in online tournaments, Turner will certainly be one to keep an eye on in the following stage of the tournament.

But there's an exceptionally talented field of just over 90 players who made it through, including two previous champions Chris Vitch and Jesse Martin who will both need to gain some traction early on as they're on the opposite side of the scale, having bagged crumbs.

It appeared to be George Trigeorgis who amassed the biggest stack, with 99,400 in his bag. He will be chased by many accomplished mixed game players such as Brian Hastings (77,600), Billy Baxter (71,900), Jameson Painter (61,200), James Obst (60,100), Scott Seiver (58,600), Ashton Griffin (52,400), John Monnette (49,800) and many others.

The third edition of the Mixed Triple Draw generated the largest turnout with 321 entries. The number has been inflated by the newly-established single reentry option whereas previous years have been played in the traditional freezeout format.

Two more days still remain before the name of the 2018 champion is discovered, but one thing is already set in stone: the winner will take home $180,455 and, of course, the gold.

Half of the remaining field is still destined to walk away empty-handed with 49 positions paid. Day 1 casualties who are no longer involved in the battles for the $722,250 prize pool included some of the biggest names imaginable, including Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu.

Ivey jumped into the tournament in the last minute of registration and it didn't take him long to get his chips flying around. He was downed to just 100 at one point to mount a comeback to 6,000 through a streak of doubles only to finally lose his stack in the following minutes. Benny Glaser, Dzmitry Urbanovich and Daniel Sterlitz were also eliminated from contention, to name a few unfortunate faces.

Day 2 kicks off Sunday, June 3 at 2 p.m. with the blinds of 600/1,200 and 1,200/2,400 bets. The PokerNews live reporting team will be on the ground to provide live updates so make sure you'll come back to follow the coverage.

Badugi

Phil Ivey was down to just one chip, a hundo. Now he's back up to 6,000. That's the story of one of the greatest players of all time. Phenomenal Ivey scored a series of doubles, with the latest happening as follows.

First, we saw Ivey all-in in a three-way pot after the second draw where Greg Mueller isolated the third player, battling heads-up against Ivey. He drew two while Ivey took one.

Greg Mueller: {4-Hearts}{2-Clubs}
Phil Ivey: {6-Spades}{3-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}

Ivey was ahead with his three-card badugi but he drew {9-Spades}, announcing "spades". Mueller rolled over the {2-Spades}, still having a chance to dispatch Ivey but the {7-Clubs} allowed Ivey to chip up to 2,400.

The next hand saw Ivey double again, climbing to 6,000.

Badugi

Paul Volpe entered the Mixed Triple Draw late after cashing in the $100k event and he's carried his wave of success to this event. Volpe has already notched a third-place finish in the $10k Super Turbo Bounty.

Volpe keeps the foot firmly on the pedal here in the triple draw as he demonstrated a few moments ago in a round of badugi.

The first hand saw Volpe (small blind) three-bet his right-hand opponent Alex Simma. Simma called and changed two while Volpe patted. Simma called additional bets on the following two streets, drawing for one. He folded on the river, leaving a nice chunk for Volpe.

Unfortunately for Simma, that wasn't the only bite Volpe took from his stack. In a three-way pot against John "Miami" Cernuto and Volpe, Simma had a made-hand pre-draw and stood pat. Volpe and Cernuto were drawing for one and Volpe raised Simma's bet after the first draw. Both of his opponents called.

Cernuto drew one and gave up after Simma bet and Volpe called.

Volpe and Simma both patted again and Volpe raised Simma's bet. Simma paused for a while but then couldn't talk himself out of the way. He called only to see Volpe turn up the nuts with {A-Clubs}{2-Spades}{3-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}.

Negreanu Finished

A-5 Triple Draw

Daniel Negreanu put in a third bet before the draws on the button and got action from the cutoff. Both players drew two and checked before Negreanu was revealed to be behind in the draw taking two again. The cutoff bet and Negreanu called. Both players drew one and Negreanu called a final bet.

The cutoff sloppily tossed {6-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{a-} into the middle.

"I have no idea what that is," Negreanu observed as cards faced in several directions.

When it was revealed to be a six, Negreanu mucked, preserving just 1,100. That went in the next hand in badugi, with Negreanu pulling two the whole way and showing down {8-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{2-Clubs} with a laugh and failing to win against a nine-badugi.

A-5 Triple Draw

John Monnette, Chris Ferguson and Phil Ivey are among the group that has showed up and pushed registrations to 321 at close.

Monnette got off to a good start when he and two other players drew one the whole way. We didn't see who led the betting on early streets, but on the end, everyone checked and Monnette won showdown with {9-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{a-}.

Ivey and Ferguson just took their seats and will have to get cooking in a hurry with less than 10 big bets.

Hastings Scores a Double KO

A-5 Triple Draw

Mike Ross was all-in pre-draw, facing off in a three-way pot against Brian Hastings and another player. There was 9,100 in the middle and Ross and Hastings both drew one while the other player took two.

They checked for the side pot and all players changed one. Hastings bet in position and called off for 2,000 total, trying to bust two players.

Hastings had made {A-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{3-} and patted while Ross and the other player both tried to improve, drawing one.

Ross then observed that he was drawing dead, having kept a seven in his hand. He eventually made {A-}{7-}{4-}{3-}{3-}. The other player rolled over a seventy-six and Hastings notched the double knockout.

Showers for Glaser

Level 5 : 400/800, 0 ante
Benny Glaser (captured in a previous event)
Benny Glaser (captured in a previous event)

A-5 Triple Draw

Benny Glaser has been eliminated from the tournament after losing his chip-stack for the second time today.

Jerry Wong was the one who sent him to the rail in what was originally a three-way pot with all players drawing for two. Glaser led out, Wong raised and while the other player called, he eventually gave up after Glaser three-bet and Wong four-bet.

Glaser called and put the rest of his chips in after the next draw where he patted and Wong took one.

Wong called and sweated the last draw. He had {A-}{2-}{3-}{4-} and the dealer shipped him the five-ball for the nuts. Glaser briefly showed his hand but it remained unclear to our eyes. Whatever it was, Glaser couldn't beat the nuts and left empty-handed.

2-7 Triple Draw

Allen Kessler raised in the small blind and called when Jake Schwartz made it two bets. Both players took two. Kessler check-called and was behind on the second draw taking two again. He check-called again and both players drew one.

"You have a chance, Allen," Schwartz said with a smile.

"I never win these," "Chainsaw" responded.

It went check-check on the end and Schwartz announced an ace. Kessler rolled over {q-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}.

"You won it," Schwartz said. "First time."

A-5 Triple Draw

John Racener check-called in the small blind against Chip Jett in the cutoff and then drew a card on the second pull. Jett patted.

"You always get there right away, huh?" Racener said with a smile, checking dark.

Jett bet and Racener called then drew a final card. Both players checked the end and Jett tabled {8-}{7-}{6-}{4-}{2-}. It's been a rough start for Racener, who is under half of a starting stack.
