Ben Diebold and Mike Gorodinsky To Battle for WSOP Gold Bracelet in Event #10: $10,000 Dealer's Choice 6-Handed Championship

Level 24
Ben Diebold
Ben Diebold

The decision on who takes home the gold bracelet in the largest $10,000 Dealer's Choice 6-Handed Championship in the history of the World Series of Poker has been postponed. Out of a field of 123 entries, Ben Diebold and Mike Gorodinsky remain in contention to follow into the footsteps of three-time champion Adam Friedman in the latest mixed game competition of the 2022 WSOP in its new home at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas.

Both have locked up the lion's share of the $1,146,975 prize pool after surviving seven 90-minute levels in the Bally’s Event Center. Diebold holds a commanding lead of 3.5 to one over Gorodinsky, who will aim to come from behind and secure his third WSOP gold bracelet.

With more than $2.6 million in WSOP cashes spread over 31 results, Gorodinsky has far more experience than Diebold but the latter ramped up his live cash game activities on American soil during the last few years significantly. Diebold also has some deep runs in tournaments to show for with almost $700,000 in recorded cashes. In March 2022, he won a $3,000 Bounty Event at the Wynn right here in Las Vegas for $96,810 and will surpass that amount by a significant margin no matter if he wins or finishes in second place.

Two-Time Bracelet Winner Mike Gorodinsky Aiming for #3

Just before the end of the night, Brian Rast was eliminated in third place and that brought an end to a fairytale comeback story on Day 3 of Event #10: $10,000 Dealer's Choice 6-Handed Championship. During the early stages with ten players remaining in the second level of the day, Rast was left with fewer than two big bets and spun that into the commanding lead on the final table after he knocked out Randy Ohel in sixth place.

Ten of the 15 returning contenders already had a WSOP bracelet win under their belt and among the early casualties were
Jordan Siegel, Tuan Le, and Joao Vieira. Once the field combined to the final two tables, Nick Schulman was eliminated by Ben Diebold and Mark Gregorich came up second-best against Mike Gorodinsky.

What followed was a very tense period in which GGPoker ambassador Felipe Ramos stuck around with a severe short stack only to bow out in tenth place. Three-time WSOP bracelet winner Greg Mueller and four-time champion Jeff Madsen then missed out on the unofficial final table and the final seven contenders were led by Ohel and Rast.

Anatolii Zyrin became very short and doubled several times before he ran with ace-queen into the ace-king of Rast in Pot-Limit Hold'em, a variant he had selected himself just prior. One of the most pivotal hands followed just a few minutes later when the two chip leaders clashed in Pot-Limit Omaha. Rast had the best of it to knock out Ohel and take over the reign atop the leaderboard for an extended period.

Two hours passed until Naoya Kihara was eliminated by Gorodinsky and four-handed play lasted even longer as the stack sizes were almost even at some point. Once Diebold went on a hot streak to take over the lead, he never looked back anymore. Christopher Claassen became his next victim and Rast was then handcuffed with a very short stack to ultimately be denied a shot at his sixth WSOP gold bracelet for now.

Brian Rast Eliminated in 3rd Place ($134,370)

Level 24
Brian Rast
Brian Rast

Brian Rast moved all in from the button and got called by Ben Diebold in the big blind.

The five-time WSOP bracelet winner and two-time Poker Player's Championship winner was at risk and dominated.

Brian Rast: {a-Spades}{7-Diamonds}
Ben Diebold: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

The dealer spread a flop of {8-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}, putting Rast in dire shape.

The {6-Spades} turn officially ended Rast's run with the inconsequential {4-Spades} placed on the river, bringing Diebold heads-up against Mike Gorodinsky.

Christopher Claassen

Pot-Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Christopher Claassen raised to 120,000 in the small blind and was called by Ben Diebold. They headed to the first draw on which Claassen took two and Diebold took one. Claassen checked, Diebold bet the pot and then instantly called the all-in of Claassen for around 700,000.

Claassen discarded one card and was up against a pat, then patted the final draw and Diebold patted back.

Claassen announced a nine and showed the {9-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-} but Diebold instantly replied with a "not good" before flipping over the {8-}{7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}.

Just after the hand, Joey Couden showed up at the rail and Diebold had asked him how his Badeucey game was because that's what Mike Gorodinsky picked. Couden replied with a "good" and Diebold nodded.

In the meanwhile, Claassen headed to the payout desk to collect $98,738 for his fourth place finish.

Rast Rocked in Badugi

Badugi

Brian Rast raised the button and Mike Gorodinsky called in the small blind. Christopher Claassen folded his big blind.

On the first draw, Gorodinsky took two cards, while Rast drew one. Gorodinsky then check-raised a bet from Rast, who then called.

Each player drew one, and Gorodinsky kept up the aggression, betting again, with Rast coming along.

Again one card each was drawn, with Gorodinsky betting the end and getting called again.

Gorodinsky showed {4-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{2-Clubs}{a-Hearts} for a wheel, saying he picked up the {4-Diamonds} on the end.

On the next hand, Rast was in the cutoff when he raised and was called by Ben Diebold in the big blind.

The players each drew two on the first draw, then one on the remaining two draws, with Diebold check-calling bets from Rast, before check raising him after the third draw. Rast reluctantly called to see Diebold roll over {9-Spades}{6-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}.

The now former chip leader lost almost a thrid of his stack in this costly round of Badugi.

Pot-Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Naoya Kihara raised to 85,000 on the button and Mike Gorodinsky inquired about the stack size of his opponent before making the call in the big blind. On the first draw, Gorodinsky took two cards and Kihara one. The action was checked to Kihara, who bet 205,000. Gorodinsky raised and Kihara called all-in for 310,000 total.

Both took one new card on the second draw and then patted on the final draw. Gorodinsky revealed his {8-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-} first and it was one notch better than the {9-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-} of Kihara, who bowed out in 5th place for $73,453.

Randy Ohel Eliminated in 6th Place ($55,329)

Level 21
Randy Ohel
Randy Ohel

Pot-Limit Omaha

After leading much of the day, Randy Ohel has just been eliminated in the biggest pot of the tournament at the hands of Brian Rast.

The action began with Rast raising to 55,000 in the cutoff and Ohel three-betting to 175,000 from the big blind.

Rast called to see a flop of {j-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{6-Clubs}.

Ohel then led out for 380,000, and Rast began a deep deliberation.

After a couple of minute, Rast declared "pot" which would account for all of Ohel's approximately 1,400,000 chips.

Ohel pushed his stack forward and the largest pot of the tournament saw cards on their backs.

Randy Ohel: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Brian Rast: {j-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}

Rast had pairs for every card on the flop, while Ohel held overpairs, a flush draw, and a gutshot straight draw.

The dealer then dropped the {4-Diamonds} and {2-Diamonds} on the turn and river, bringing no help to Ohel, who was eliminated in shocking fashion just before the players went on break for dinner.

Pot-Limit Hold'em

The action commenced with a raise to 45,000 by Brian Rast and Randy Ohel clicked it up to 125,000 on the button. Anatolii Zyrin four-bet for the size of the pot for 440,000 in the small blind almost immediately. Rast gave it some consideration and pushed all-in for Ohel to fold and Zyrin committed the remainder of his chips.

Anatolii Zyrin: {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Brian Rast: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}

The dominated ace found no help on the {7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{j-Spades}{9-Hearts} runout and that sent Zyrin to the rail in 7th place for $42,205.

Pot-Limit Omaha

After Randy Ohel raised to 56,000 from under the gun, Brian Rast called on the button and Christopher Claassen called in the big blind.

The players all checked the {4-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{9-Clubs} flop, but on the {2-Diamonds} turn, after Claassen checked, Ohel bet 100,000.

Rast called and Claassen folded, leaving just two to the {6-Clubs} river.

After Ohel checked, Rast cut out a bet of 285,000, which Ohel quickly folded to, passing some of his chips and the chip lead over to the man who was once the shortest stack in the room.

Jeff Madsen: {x-}{x-}/{k-}{a-}{4-}{k-}/{x-}
Naoya Kihara: {x-}{x-}/{a-}{j-}{j-}{4-}/{x-}

A short-stacked Jeff Madsen bet fouth street and was called by Naoya Kihara.

On fifth, with Kihara pairing, he was torn on whether to continue, with over 100,000 in the pot.

Eventually, he called and after Kihara improved, the rest of Madsen's chips ended up in the middle.

After seventh street was dealt, Kihara's final board read {j-}{9-}{4-}{3-}{a-}, while Madsen could only show {q-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{a-}, as Kihara's jack-low eliminated Madsen.

Greg Mueller Eliminated in 9th Place ($32,608)

Level 20

Greg Mueller

Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo

Within two hands, the stack of Greg Mueller was melted to zero and he exited in ninth place. Below is how it all unfolded.

Greg Mueller: {x-}{x-} / {8-Hearts}{6-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} / {x-}
Brian Rast: {x-}{x-} / {a-Spades}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} / {x-}

Brian Rast had the lead and bet it all the way with Mueller calling down. He sighed on fifth street and mentioned "that's a spot to be in, eh" but invested the chips anyways. As he also called sixth, he only had a few chips behind.

Rast already exposed his {a-Clubs}{4-Hearts} for aces and fours before his last card was delivered and Mueller studied his cards before sigh-folding as he was left with fumes.

Those went in the following hand on third street already.

Greg Mueller: {7-Spades}{3-Clubs} / {9-Clubs}{10-Spades}{8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} / {5-Hearts}
Ben Diebold: {8-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} / {5-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{6-Clubs} / {4-Hearts}
Brian Rast: {x-}{x-} / {7-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} fold on fourth

Ben Diebold and Rast came along when Mueller was all-in and Diebold then bet fourth to force out Rast. Until sixth, Diebold had a straight and the low locked up. Mueller needed a six or jack to chop but bricked to bow out in 9th place for $32,608.
