Hall of Fame Inductions

With the dinner break having come to an end, it's time now for the 2008 inductions into the Poker Hall of Fame. This year's inductees are Duane "Dewey" Tomko and Henry Orenstein. A lectern has been placed on the stage near the dealer box. We imagine that a few (short) speeches will be made as part of the ceremony before play resumes.

Dinner Time!

We are now on a dinner break. Play will resume at 7:15pm local time.

Just prior to starting the dinner break, there was a pause in the action to announce a multi-year sponsorship deal for All-In Energy Drink as the official energy drink of the World Series of Poker. This is a Johnny Chan endeavor, and TD Jack Effel called Phil Hellmuth to the stage to introduce Chan.

"That's ok, you guys can boo," said Hellmuth as he mounted the stage. The gallery complied, to Hellmuth's delight. After a few kind words about Chan, Hellmuth called him to the stage.

"Who's gonna win, Johnny?" asked Hellmuth.

"I don't care who's going to win," replied Chan. "I just care who's going to drink the most All-In Energy Drink."

"That was a pretty shameless plug, Johnny."

Maybe so, but Chan didn't seem to care.

The Phillipians are on fire!

The balcony of the Penn & Teller Theater, loaded with Dennis Phillips fans
The balcony of the Penn & Teller Theater, loaded with Dennis Phillips fans
Dennis Phillips reserved an astounding 359 tickets for his supporters, many of whom flew in from his hometown of St. Louis, MO to watch him play. Since their man doubled up and then won a huge pot from Ivan Demidov, they've grown increasingly rowdier and more excited, as Phillips is now back in safe chip territory.

After starting out as the chip leader with 26.3 million, Phillips fell to only 8.8 million after dropping a massive early pot to Demidov. He has now climbed back up to over 27 million, prompting even more chanting and cheering from his entourage.

Hand #86 - Dennis Phillips

Scott Montgomery has the button in Seat 4. After Peter Eastgate folds, Dennis Phillips makes it 1.3 million to go. Demidov asks Phillips for a count before calling the raise. Off to the flop we go.

{K-Diamonds} {3-Clubs} {3-Hearts}

Demidov quickly checks to Phillips, who bets 2.55 million, just slightly less than what's in the pot. Demidov doesn't take long to call. Both players check the {7-Clubs} turn. The river is the {K-Spades}, double-pairing the board and drawing a low murmur from the crowd. Again Demidov checks it over to Phillips. Phillips bets 5 million.

Demidov is shaking his head and talking to himself, perhaps wondering what he's gotten himself into here. Phillips has his hands interlocked in front of his face, eying all of the fidgety motions of Demidov.

After two minutes in the tank, Demidov seems no closer to a decision. At one point he flips his hands up in the air slightly as if to say, "What do I do?" and then lets out an audible sigh. His lips are moving, perhaps working backwards through the action in the hand. Phillips keeps glancing at him. Finally, Demidov calls!

Phillips opens {K-Hearts} {Q-Spades} for a full house, kings full of treys, to the jubilant roars of the Dennis Phillips Army. Obviously, after taking so long to call, Demidov can't beat him. He quietly mucks his hand.

Dennis Phillips is now up to 27.55 million in chips. That pot sends Demidov back down to the pack with 31.075 million.

Hand #83 - Dennis Phillips

"We love you. Dennis!"
"We love you. Dennis!"
Peter Eastgate has the button in Seat 9. He raises to 1,250,000 and Dennis Phillips calls from the small blind.

The flop is {A-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds} {3-Spades}. Phillips checks and Eastgate checks behind. The {9-Spades} lands on the turn and Phillips bets 1,500,000. Eastgate folds and Phillips wins the pot.

What does that mean? Time for his fans to give him an ovation and honk their ever-present truck horn in support.
