Top Set Holds for the Defending Champ

Level 4 : 100/200, 0 ante
Ryan Laplante
Ryan Laplante

With 1,200 chips already in the middle and the board reading {10-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{3-Clubs}, action checked to Ryan Laplante on the button and he bet the pot. The big blind check-raised to 3,000, Laplante moved all in, and the big blind called for the remainder of his stack.

Laplante: {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Opponent: {J-Spades}{7-Spades}{4-Clubs}{4-Spades}

Both players had flopped sets, but Laplante had the best of it by miles with top set which left his opponent drawing very thin. The {5-Clubs} turn and {A-Spades} river changed nothing and Laplante took the pot to eliminate his opponent.

Jessica Dawley Climbing

Level 4 : 100/200, 0 ante

With one player all in before the flop, a small side pot developing, and about 6,000 chips already in the middle, the board read {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{8-Spades} and Jessica Dawley bet 4,000 from the hijack into her lone live opponent on the button. He quickly folded and Dawley and the all-in player tabled their hands.

Dawley: {Q-}{J-}{J-}{3-}
Opponent: {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{5-}

Dawley was ahead with her jacks and her opponent needed to improve in order to double up, but the {8-Clubs} turn and {2-Clubs} river changed nothing and Dawley took the pot.

From Way Ahead to Drawing Dead

Level 3 : 75/150, 0 ante

Steven Wark raised to 300 from early position, John Holley called from middle position, the player in the cutoff raised the pot to 1,575, and the button shoved for about 4,300. Both blinds folded, Wark called to put both all-in players at risk, Holley folded, and the three players tabled their hands.

Wark: {K-}{K-}{3-Spades}{3-Diamonds}
Cutoff: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}
Button: {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}

Wark sighed with dismay as he saw how far behind he was, but everything changed when the flop fell {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{8-Spades} to give him quad threes and leave both his opponents in terrible shape. The {7-Clubs} on the turn ensured that he would scoop the pot, and the meaningless {10-Diamonds} fell on the river to complete the board and send both of Wark's opponents to the rail.

Annette Obrestad Chipping Up Early

Level 3 : 75/150, 0 ante

With about 1,300 already in the middle and the board reading {Q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{6-Spades}, Annette Obrestad was on the button and heads up against one player in early position. He checked, and Obrestad checked behind.

The turn brought the {7-Diamonds} and the early-position player bet 850. Obrestad called.

The {2-Diamonds} fell on the river and the early-position player bet again, 2,000 this time. Obrestad called and tabled {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{8-Hearts}{5-Hearts}, and her nine-high straight was good enough to win the pot.

Aces vs. Aces

Level 2 : 50/100, 0 ante

The player under the gun limped in, Ylon Schwartz was next to act and did the same, and Christopher Haydt raised to 275 from the cutoff. Both blinds called, as did both limpers, and five players saw a flop of {8-Hearts}{7-Spades}{7-Clubs}. Action checked around to Haydt, and he bet 1,100. The blinds folded, the under-the-gun player called, and Schwartz folded.

The turn brought the {4-Clubs} and the under-the-gun player checked. Haydt moved all in for 3,625 and his opponent called to put himself at risk.

Both players tabled pocket aces, but Haydt held {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{7-Hearts} for trip sevens, and his opponent had {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for an open-ended straight draw. The river changed nothing and Haydt took the pot to eliminate his opponent.
