Matt Wakeman Leads the $5K Challenge into Day 2 (full)

Level 14 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Matthew Wakeman Bags Chip Lead After Day 1
Matthew Wakeman Bags Chip Lead After Day 1

After fourteen 45-minute levels were played out in the first day of the $5,000 Challenge Event, Matt Wakeman will return as the Day 2 chip leader after he bagged an impressive 981,000.

A field of 215 players came together, and 16 of them will return on Thursday, December 6, at 2:15 p.m. local time. The field surpassed the needed 211 to hit the $1,000,000 guarantee that was on offer.

A long way behind Wakeman are Robert Spano (505,000) and Dejan Boskovic (424,000) who round out the top three. Hannah Lee (382,000), Sam Khoueis (370,000),Gautam Dhingra (350,000), Shivan Abdine (206,000)[/B] and Australian Poker Hall-of-Famer Billy Argyros (204,000) all progressed through.

Big names to depart throughout the day and miss out on the top 24 and a payday included; defending champion of this event Brendon Rubie, 2011 WSOP Europe Main Event champion Andrew Hinrichsen, Tristan Bain, Jarred and Connie Graham, last year’s WSOP Circuit Main Event Sydney champion Michael Kanaan, Nurlan Boobekov, Graeme Putt, James Broom, Ash Gupta, Daniel Laidlaw, Stevan Chew, Jonathan Karamalikis, 2005 WSOP Main Event Champion Joe Hachem, Gary Benson and Dean Blatt.

Blatt would finish as the money bubble when he called Isaac Lau's shove holding pocket queens and found himself up against ace-nine. The flop would bring an ace and that would guarantee the remaining 24 players a $9,426 return.

Those to make the money but miss Day 2 include Julius Colman, Australian Poker Hall-of-Famer Jason Gray and Sam Higgs.

When play resumes the blinds will begin at 5,000/10,000/10,000 big blind ante. PokerNews will be back with all the $5K Challenge Day 2 action as the remaining 16 players battle for a place at the final table before playing down to an eventual champion.

Dean Blatt Bubbles the $5K Challenge Event
Dean Blatt Bubbles the $5K Challenge Event

Isaac Lau raised to 15,000 from the cutoff before Dean Blatt re-raised to 55,000 from the big blind. Lau then moved all in for 247,000 which had Blatt covered by 6,000. Blatt announced that he would call once the other tables completed their hand which he did.

Isaac Lau: {a-Hearts}{9-Spades}
Dean Blatt: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}

The board ran out {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{8-Spades} to see Lau spike and ace on the flop and take down the pot with a higher two-pair.

The remaining 24 players in today's field have all just guaranteed themselves a $9,426 payday.

Dhingra Eliminates Chew In a Massive Pot

Level 11 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Gautam Dhingra
Gautam Dhingra

With right around 16,000 already in the pot, Stevan Chew checked over to Gautam Dhingra who put out a bet of 7,000 on the flop of {10-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{5-Spades}. Chew thought for a few moments before check-raising and making it 25,000. Dhingra thought himself before calling.

The turn was the {3-Clubs} and Chew continued firing, making it 45,000. Dhingra took a few moments before calling.

On the {6-Hearts} river, Chew moved all in, shoving for right around 80,000. Dhingra smiled then put in the chips to call. Chew turned up his {K-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for just a pair of sixes and a missed flush draw and Dhingra had it beat with {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for two pair. With that, Dhingra scooped the massive pot to chip up over 400,000 while Chew hit the rail.

Action folded around to the hijack where Jonathan Karamalikis moved all in for 36,500. Action folded to the button where Hannah Lee moved all in over the top for roughly 70,000. Everyone else folded and it was on to a showdown.

Jonathan Karamalikis: {2-Hearts}{5-Spades}
Hannah Lee: {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}

The board ran out {K-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{7-Clubs} and Lee was unable to find the cards she needed to secure the knockout. With that, Karamalikis was able to survive and he doubled up to right around 80,000 while Lee was left with just over ten big blind.

River Bails Out Hachem While Higgs Triples

Level 8 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Joe Hachem
Joe Hachem

Sam Higgs moved all in before the flop for what looked like 14,500 over a raise from Joe Hachem and one call. Hachem eventually called and the other player in the hand called as well.

The flop was {K-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{3-Hearts} and after a check, Hachem, heads up for the side pot, put out a bet of 12,000. The other player called and the {8-Spades} came on the turn. There, Hachem moved all in for roughly 27,500 effective after his opponent checked a second time. The player dropped deep into the tank and he thought for some time before eventually calling.

Sam Higgs: {K-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}
Joe Hachem: {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Opponent: {K-Hearts}{2-Hearts}

Hachem was in trouble with just middle pair while Higgs turned two pair and the other player in the hand had top pair. The river was the {10-Spades} though and with that, Hachem made two pair to earn himself the big side pot while Higgs took down the main pot to triple up with a better two pair.

Former Main Event Winner Joe Hachem Joins the Field

Level 3 : 200/400, 400 ante
Joe Hachem
Joe Hachem

While an already stacked field has shown up for the $5,000 Challenge here at the Star Sydney, the field just got a little bit tougher.

Entering in the middle of level two is the leader of the Australia all-time money list and former Main Event Champion Joe Hachem. Over the course of his poker career, Hachem has earned over $12 million in live tournament cashes, with over $8 million of those earnings being World Series of Poker specific. In total, Hachem boasts 31 lifetime cashes in the World Series of Poker.

Last year, Hachem nearly made the final table of this event, finishing 10th and collecting $20,362. He'll look to improve upon that with a strong finish again this year, but he's off to a cold start and sits with right around 17,000, so he'll have some work to do.
