Francisco Da Costa Santos Wins Event #6: €1,650 Six-Handed Pot-Limit Omaha (€83,275)!

Level 20 : 6,000/12,000, 0 ante
The winner, Santos!
The winner, Santos!

The final table of the €1,650 Six-Handed Pot-Limit Omaha event started with just five players, but winning was far from an easy task for Francisco Da Costa Santos. A long, hard-fought battle, between Santos and his four opponents, resulted in the first-ever bracelet for Portugal, as he walked away with the €82,275 grand prize.

The very first hand of final table play resulted in an all-in shove from Petteri Kalenius. He challenged Santos, but the eventual winner decided that it wasn't the right moment. This was the mantra of the final table as we didn't see any bustouts in the first three hours.

Short stack Petteri Kalenius doubled up in one of the first hands, giving a big blow to Andrew Lichtenberger's stack. The chip leader going into the final table struggled the entire time, making him eventually bust out in fifth place. On his final hand, he got all his chips into the pot with {Q-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} against Aku Joentausta's {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}{7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}. The board ran out {A-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{3-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{6-Hearts}, and the most accomplished player at the final table was gone. Lichtenberger added €18,463 to live tournament earnings for his finish.

Thirty minutes after Lichtenberger had been eliminated, it was time for Santos to turn the tables on Joentausta. The young Finnish player had been in control for quite some time, but that rapidly changed when he played the biggest pot of the tournament against Santos. In a pot worth 525,000 chips, Santos showed {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}{9-Spades}{4-Diamonds} against Joentausta's {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. The dealer ran out {2-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{3-Spades}{8-Spades}, and Joentausta was left behind with little chips. Santos showed real emotions and almost danced around the table in excitement.

Ana Marquez, who had been quietly grinding her below average stack, was the one who took out fourth-place finisher Kalenius. The Spanish pro raised to 20,000 under the gun and Kalenius defended his big blind. On a {10-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} flop, Kalenius check-raised all in and Marquez called with {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{6-Clubs}. She was up against {Q-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{3-Clubs}, and after the turn, the {J-Spades}, and river, the {A-Diamonds}, it was all over for the Finn who took home €25,831.

The other Finn, and youngest player at the final table, was next to go. Joentausta was short and moved all in with {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{8-Clubs}. Santos showed {K-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{4-Hearts}, and he flopped a winning straight when the board brought {10-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{4-Spades}. The heads-up match began with a massive 742,000-chip stack for Santos while Marquez had only 187,000.

The heads-up match started after the dinner break, and lasted just 13 minutes. Marquez was in search of a quick double up and got her money in with {A-Spades}{K-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}. Santos went for it with {10-Spades}{9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}, and made history when the board ran out {8-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}. Santos fell to the floor, shed tears, hugged his girlfriend Mariana and was most of all just very, very happy with what he had just done. He walks away with the €83,275 first-place prize and the first-ever gold bracelet for Portugal.

Santos Grabs The Lead After Big Bluff

Francisco Da Costa Santos
Francisco Da Costa Santos

Andrew Lichtenberger raised to 12,000 pre flop after which Francisco Da Costa Santos three-bet to 38,000 from the button. After both blinds folded it was back on Lichtenberger who made the call.

The flop brought out {K-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}, and Lichtenberger check-called 35,000. On the turn the {10-Hearts} hit, and both players checked.

The river was the {5-Diamonds} and Lichtenberger bet 30,000. About a minute went by, and all of a sudden Santos put out a big raise. Lichtenberger folded immediately and Santos erupted.

The Portugese smashed his cards, {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{4-Spades}, onto the table and did a victory lap. Lichtenberger frowned, but remained silent as he lost a serious chuck of his stack.

Lichtenberger Takes Big Hit, Kalenius Doubles Up

Petteri Kalenius
Petteri Kalenius

Petteri Kalenius raised to 9,000 from the button after which Ana Marquez gave up her small blind. Andrew Lichtenberger was in the big blind and he three-bet to 29,000. Kalenius tanked for a bit and finally moved all in for 80,000. Lichtenberger made the call.

Showdown:
Petteri Kalenius: {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}
Andrew Lichtenberger: {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

The board ran out {6-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{6-Hearts}{8-Spades}{8-Clubs}, and Kalenius doubled up. Lichtenberger has lost his chip lead, and all five players are now very close to each other.

"You start to speak now?" Francisco Da Costa Santos asked Kalenius after he doubled up, but the Finn remained pretty quiet.

"I'm okay," Kalenius said.

"At least you're smiling," Santos smiled as he tries to liven up the atmosphere.

Can Lichtenberger Seal The Deal?

Chip leader Andrew Lictenberger
Chip leader Andrew Lictenberger

That is the mean question heading into today's final table. Over the course of the last couple of years Andrew Lichtenberger has shown to be one of the best. But yet he has failed to complete that ultimate goal: A World Series of Poker bracelet.

Today's chip leader has been close plenty of times, with his best result being a second place finish in the 2009 $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em shootout event. This past summer he also had some great shots, finishing in eight in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-max, third in the $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Single Draw and sixth in the $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-max. Lichtenberger is ready to be part of the most illustrious group in poker, and today could be his day!

There are just five players remaining in this event, after the aforementioned busted Nikolay Volper in the dying seconds of Day 2 play. The other big notable player at this final table is Ana Marquez. The Spanish pro has made plenty of deep runs in big events, her best being a tenth place finish in the 2011 PCA Main Event.

Two of the remaining five are from Finland. Both Aku Joentausta and Petteri Kalenius showed their qualities on the felt last night, and will most certainly not be toyed around with. The most toying around was done last night by Francisco Da Costa Santos, who comes into today second in chips. Santos was very vocal last night, and got himself involved in many pots. He's not expected to slow down today, and fireworks are bound to happen.

All in all we can look forward to having another great final table with many interesting story lines. Make sure to tune in at 2:00 PM GMT to follow all the live updates.
