Volper Hyper Active, Monnette Doubles

Nikolay Volper has players nearly every hand in the last 20 minutes, but he didn't win every one. John Monnette just raised under the gun to 4,200 after which Raul Paez three-bet to 11,500 from the button.

Volper called from the big blind, and Monnette also committed the extra chips with just 4,400 left behind. The flop came down {J-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and Volper immediately bet pot, 35,100. Monnette called all in and Paez folded.

Monnette showed {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{2-Hearts} and beat Volper who tabled {Q-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{5-Clubs}{2-Spades}. The dealer scooped up the cards before we could write up the turn and river, but one thing was for certain, Monnette had doubled up.

In the following hands it was Volper who kept raising and betting. He picked up many small pots and is back at the top.

Shak Drops Down, McDonald Back Up

Mike McDonald
Mike McDonald

Mike McDonald raised to 2,600 after which Dan Shak three-bet to 8,400. McDonald called in position.

The flop brought out {K-Spades}{9-Hearts}{3-Clubs} and Shak quickly fired out 10,000. McDonald tanked for a bit, and then called.

The turn was the {5-Hearts} and Shak put McDonald all in for his final 14,800, and he called immediately.

Showdown:
Dan Shak: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{2-Clubs}
Mike McDonald: {K-Clubs}{9-Spades}{6-Spades}{8-Clubs}

The river was not the {Q-Spades}, but the {A-Spades}, and McDonald doubled up to a very playable stack.

Crazy Hand Sees Volper Take the Chip Lead

Quite the hand developed in the last hand before the break. It happened on a {q-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{8-Spades} flop with 9,500 in the middle. Raul Paez was in the small blind and check-called a bet of 6,000 from Nikolay Volper in the big. The {10-Hearts} turn saw Paez check once again, but this time he check-raised to 48,400 after Volper had bet 9,000.

Volper thought for a bit and then said, "I call." He proceeded to turn over his cards ({Q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{9-Clubs}) even though he had about 17,000 behind. Volper was issued a one-round penalty for exposing his cards and had to play the hand out face up.

When the {Q-Clubs} spiked on the river and Volper filled up, he smiled and moved all in. Paez was speechless. He just sat there quietly and showed his hand {J-Hearts}{9-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}. He had the nuts on the turn and continued to stare at the board for about 15 seconds before folding his hand.

John Monnette Eliminated in 14th Place (€3,752)

John Monnette
John Monnette

A short-stacked John Monnette got his last 18,000 all in preflop and was at risk against Aku Joentausta.

Showdown
Joentausta: {Q-Clubs}{A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Monnette: {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}

Monnette got it in good with kings, but the {J-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} flop gave him pause for concern as Joentausta picked up a flush draw. The turn was not a diamond, but it was just as bad as the {A-Spades} gave Joentausta a pair of aces and the lead. Monnette stood from his seat in preparation for his exit, which he made when the {10-Clubs} blanked on the river.

It was yet another cash in Monnette's already impressive 2012 World Series of Poker.

"Innocent Slowroll"

Ana Marquez
Ana Marquez

Ana Marquez just managed to get into serious contention after doubling through Dan Shak. All this didn't go down quietly though.

Marquez limped from the small blind and Shak checked his big blind. The flop came down {J-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}, Marquez bet and Shak called.

On the turn the {10-Clubs} hit and Marquez bet 6,500. Shak raised pot to 24,500 after which Marquez started tanking. She wanted a count of the pot and moved all in after a couple of minutes. Shak called.

Showdown:
Dan Shak: {K-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}
Ana Marquez: {A-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{7-Spades}

Marquez had the nut flush, and with that the hand locked up. On the river the {3-Diamonds} showed up and Shak had to cough up 50,100. Shak pointed out that Marquez slowrolled him, and she was very apologetic.

"Call it an innocent slowroll," Marquez said with a smile. She added that she wasn't sure if calling or shoving was the right thing on the turn. In the end she got a full double up, and Shak is now one of the short stacks.

Smith Survives

With about 10,000 in the pot and a flop of {3-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{4-Clubs}, Micah Smith got his last 8,700 in the pot and was at risk against Antoine Pacaud.

Showdown
Pacaud: {10-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}
Smith: {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{J-Clubs}

The {2-Clubs} turn gave Smith a flush to C=crack Pacaud's flopped wheel, and he was pushed the pot after the {7-Spades} was put out on the river.
