Hendrix, Auer and Qartomy Pace Final 34 in Wynn Main Event

Level 20 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Adam Hendrix
Adam Hendrix

The final 34 contenders have emerged in the Wynn Spring Classic $3,500 Championship, and three players have paced well ahead of the others to position themselves for the best chance at the $391K first-place prize.

Tops in the counts is Adam Hendrix, who looked destined to lap the rest of the field after an incredibly hot start to the day. Hendrix began his rampage a few levels in versus fellow big stack Ben Underwood, when Hendrix made a huge call for stacks with a weak full house — trips were on the board — and was shown a bluff. He then cracked the aces of Matt Bond with a set of eights and was off to the races with 350 big blinds.

Second place is Matthias Auer, who looked set to bag a merely very good stack until the final level of the day, when he got aces over the tens of Qing Liu blind versus blind for a heap to double past 2 million.

Finally, there's Ray Qartomy. The boisterous regular picked up his momentum late as well, gambling with a combo draw on the turn for most of his stack and hitting then having kings hold in a three-way all in that busted high roller star Sergi Reixach and Ryan Remington.

Those three hold a combined 6 million of the 24 million in play with only 300,000 total separating Hendrix from Qartomy.

Others making it through to Day 3 included Chino Rheem, Jeremy Ausmus, Ankush Mandavia, Eric Afriat, Sean Winter and Chris Moorman. They'll be set for a long final day on Monday.

About 200 players — counting late registrations during the first two levels — were in action total, which pushed the prize pool to just shy of $2 million from 614 entries. Some of those getting a slice of that with top-63 finishes were Upeshka De Silva, Matt Stout, Nick Pupillo, Seungmook Jung and recent WPT runner-up Tuan Phan.

Play resumes Monday at noon, so come back to PokerNews then to see who grabs the monster prize awaiting the winner.

Not Low, But Good Enough for Qartomy to Bust Two

"Keep it low!" shouted Ray Qartomy.

Cards were on their backs between Qartomy and two opponents, both of whom he covered and had beat with {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}. Sergi Reixach had {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} and Ryan Remington {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}.

High cards arrived but the {k-Hearts}{j-Spades}{4-Diamonds} was even better for Qartomy. The {a-Hearts} kept everyone live, but the {7-Hearts} river was the blank Qartomy desired.

"Ship it to papa!" he said.

Balzano Busted as Moorman Triples

Level 19 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Chris Moorman
Chris Moorman

A three-way all in was underway when we arrived to the table housing Chris Moorman, with the British pro the shortest of the bunch.

Moorman (button): {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Paul Balzano (hijack): {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Qing Liu (middle position): {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

The board ran {7-Spades}{q-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} and Moorman collected about 190,000 from each opponent. Balzano had about 250,000 beyond that and sent it all to Liu with a shake of the head.

Anthony Zinno Eliminated on the Bubble

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Anthony Zinno
Anthony Zinno

Anthony Zinno looked to have opened on the button and called all in for about 220,000 against Matthias Auer in the small blind.

Auer: {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Zinno: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}

Zinno was in good shape on the {3-Spades}{3-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} flop but the {a-Hearts} turn left him in need on the river. It was a {9-Clubs}, ending the bubble and busting Zinno.

Two Players Dub

Qing Liu

Small blind Zhen Cai three-bet to about 43,000 against a middle-position open and he called off immediately when that player set him in for 167,000.

Cai: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Opponent: {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}

Cai didn't have much to sweat as it ran {j-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{7-Spades}.

At another table, Qing Liu doubled up, getting his remaining chips in on the river with top boat, kings full of jacks, and the bubble goes on.

More Piles for Hendrix

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Adam Hendrix
Adam Hendrix

Adam Hendrix defended the big blind and checked a {6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} flop. Matt Bond bet 6,000 in the hijack, Hendrix made it 20,000, and Bond came back with 52,000. Hendrix peeled for the {3-Diamonds} turn and he check-called 73,000 more. On the {2-Clubs} river, Hendrix checked. Bond took some time then told the dealer he was all in.

Hendrix beat him to the pot and turned up {8-Spades}{8-Clubs} to collect Bond's last 230,000 or so, with Bond showing {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}.

Hendrix Makes Massive Call for a Mountainous Stack

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Adam Hendrix
Adam Hendrix

A massive pot of around 300,000 sat in the middle between small blind Ben Underwood and big blind Adam Hendrix. The board read {2-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{2-Spades}{k-Hearts} and Hendrix was facing an all-in shove worth about 280,000. He was deep in the tank.

According to Ryan Laplante, Underwood had limp-raised to 31,000 and then barreled 35,000 on the flop and 100,000 on the turn before cramming the river.

Hendrix alternately cracked his knuckles, studied the ceiling, and peered at Underwood for clues.

Lee Markholt wandered over to sweat from a neighboring table.

"You guys are playing big pots over here," he observed.

"You know wherever I go, the action is," Chino Rheem said from Seat 1.

Finally, Hendrix slid in some chips to call. Underwood instantly flipped over {10-Spades}{9-Spades} and moved to exit, with Hendrix showing {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}. He got busy stacking an amount that looks to be around four-times the average count in the room.

Ausmus Takes it All from McKeehen

Level 13 : 1,500/2,500, 2,500 ante
Jeremy Ausmus
Jeremy Ausmus

Joe McKeehen was in the small blind and bet 20,000 into about 50,000 on {10-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{9-Clubs}. Jeremy Ausmus called in middle position and the turn was a {7-Clubs}. McKeehen slowed down with a check and Ausmus bet 35,000. McKeehen called, bringing the {3-Hearts} river. He checked and Ausmus jammed except one T500 chip. It was 103,500 and McKeehen called fairly quickly.

Ausmus showed {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for a set and took the huge pot down.

A few hands later, those players saw a {3-Clubs}{a-Spades}{9-Hearts} flop and each checked to bring a {9-Diamonds}. Ausmus checked from under the gun, McKeehen bet 8,000, and Ausmus made it 23,000. McKeehen called. On the {2-Diamonds} river, Ausmus shoved. McKeehen counted down his stack. It looked to be about 46,000 and he opted to call it off, turning over {a-}{10-}.

Ausmus had him outkicked with {a-}{q-} and took the former WSOP champ's remaining stack.

Winter on a Heap

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Sean Winter
Sean Winter

Sean Winter was under the gun and facing a bet of 16,000 or so into 60,000 out of the big blind on a board of {6-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{5-Spades}{q-Diamonds}. He made it 110,000 and his opponent got the count, thought a bit, then moved all in. It was 189,000 and Winter thought about 30 seconds then called for nearly all of his chips.

The big blind showed {q-}{j-} but was no good against Winter's {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs} for a boat.
