Welcome to Day 2 of Wynn Spring Classic $3,500 Championship

Joe McKeehen
Joe McKeehen

The preliminary rounds are over — mostly — and it's time for the main event, Day 2 of the Wynn Spring Classic $3,500 Championship.

Out of about 550 entries thus far, roughly 160 still remain, but both of those numbers are still set to fluctuate some. That's because registration remains open through the first two levels of Day 2 plus the 10-minute break that will take place thereafter. Considering the late buys will a playable but still vulnerable 40,000 at either 1,500 or 2,000 big blind, plenty of bullets are still expected to be fired.

Considering the prize pool is already in the neighborhood of $1.8 million, there's plenty to entice players to keep taking shots should the beginning of Day 2 go poorly for them.

Plenty of notable names have advanced, including the likes of Joe McKeehen, Matt Stout, Erik Cajelais, James Anderson, Chino Rheem, Sergi Reixach, Mike Sowers, Joseph Cheong and Toby Lewis.

Another 10 levels are on the schedule today, starting at 1,000/1,500/1,500 and ending at 6,000/12,000/12,000. The prize pool breakdown should be known and posted shortly after registration closes.

Cards are scheduled to fly at noon local time, so keep an eye on this space to continue following the action here on PokerNews.

Wang Doubles Through Conniff

Level 11 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante

With {q-Spades}{4-Spades}{8-Clubs}{9-Spades} on the felt, Asher Conniff bet 12,500 from early position. Mike Wang made it 34,500 in the cutoff, about half his remaining stack. Conniff called and quickly check-called the rest on the {8-Diamonds} river.

Wang opened {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} for queens full and Conniff showed {4-}{4-} before mucking.

Fontan Coolers Phan

Level 11 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante

Tuan Phan checked from the small blind on a board of {5-Spades}{a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and Paul Fontan bet about 12,000. Phan made it 27,500 and Fontan called. On the {7-Spades} river, Fontan snap-called an all-in bet for about 30,000.

Phan shook his head and showed {5-}{5-} for a very weak full house but he was beaten on the turn anyway as Fontan had {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs} for the quads.

Green Doubles Phan for the Full Amount

Level 11 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Brian Green
Brian Green

With a completed board of {2-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{a-Spades}{a-Clubs} in front of them, Brian Green bet 20,000 out of the small blind. Tuan Phan shoved from under the gun for just north of 60,000. Green splashed in a few chips and Phan showed {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}.

Green mucked {q-}{q-} with a sigh but perked up when the dealer announced a count of about 23,000.

"Sounds good to me," Green said with a laugh, knowing the amount was much greater.

The right number was 64,000 and Green sent it over a moment later.

"What the Hell is Wrong With You?"

Level 11 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante

Three players put in 5,000 each on a {9-Spades}{a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} flop and the turn brought the {7-Spades}. Action checked to Eric Afriat in early position and he bet 20,000. The small blind folded but Landon Tice was stickier from under the gun. Both players checked the {4-Diamonds} river and Tice opened {k-Diamonds}{10-Spades}.

Afriat showed {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}, and the small blind seemed less than pleased by the hands shown down.

"Are you f****** serious?" he asked. "I should have bluffed with the best hand."

He continued with an incredulous laugh.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!"

Two Midwesterners Bust

Level 11 : 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante

Kyna England got her last 20,000 or so in with {a-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} and seemed to be in good shape against the {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} of neighbor Aaron Massey after turning a flush on {10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}. Unfortunately for her, the board paired with a {7-Clubs} river and Massey scooped her remaining stack.

At another table, Rodger Johnson got it in with {9-}{9-} against {5-}{5-} after a flop that saw the two fives improve to a gutshot. The straight came in on the turn, leaving Johnson dead to a chop that he didn't find.
