Chaz Chattha Captures GUKPT Luton Title for £59,360
From August 14 to 21, 2011, the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour held its fourth stop of the 2011 tour in Luton, England. Held at the G Casino Luton, the latest GUKPT stop featured a number of side events, culminating in a £1,000 Main Event that was held this past weekend. The three-day tournament attracted 212 runners and created a £212,000 prize pool. Some of the UK poker scene's most notable players headed to Luton for the event. After navigating a tough final table, Hit Squad member Chaz Chattha emerged victorious and captured the £59,360 ($96,594) first-place prize.
Chattha’s win was especially impressive for two reasons. First, he defeated a stacked final table, his fourth on the GUKPT, that included Andrew Feldman and Toby Lewis; and second, he began that final table as the short stack with 10 big blinds, or 105,000. Comparatively, Lewis entered as the chip leader with 620,000, while Feldman’s 609,000 was good for second. Fortunately for Chattha, the brother of fellow Hit Squad member and GUKPT winner Sunny Chattha, lady luck was on his side.
According to the GUKPT, Chattha summed it up best in his post-victory interview when he explained: “I just ran good – got my shoves through early, then when I did get called I had it!” Sure enough, between Chattha, Lewis, and Feldman, the three managed to eliminate the other seven competitors, leaving them three-handed. It was at that point that Feldman made his exit after running QxQx into Chattha's KxKx.
Check out Sky Poker's pre heads-up interview with Lewis:
Chattha began heads-up play with a 2:1 chip lead over Lewis, but it was the latter who used preflop aggression to take down five pots in a row; however, on the seventh hand between the duo, Lewis picked up Ax10x only to run into Chattha's AxKx. A king hit the flop, and the rest, as they say, was history.
The win marked Chattha’s fifth GUKPT cash dating back to 2007, but it was his first victory on the tour. His previous bests were a third-place finish in the 2010 GUKPT £2,500 Grand Final in London for £63,395 ($100,757), and a runner-up finish in the 2007 GUKPT £1,000 No-Limit Hold’em Event for £32,000 ($64,529). With his latest win, Chattha increased his career winnings to an impressive $705,013, which is a bit more than brother Sunny’s $563,959.
