The Sunday Briefing: Jon "apestyles" Van Fleet Among Sunday's Winners

Jon Van Fleet

Another Sunday on the virtual felt has come and gone, and four players emerged from the masses to earn six-figure scores. The biggest was $157,420.75 going to the second-place finisher in the Sunday Million. Holding the chip lead when a four-handed deal was made, "MeatPounder" eventually finished second to champion "StuU_0905".

Out of the ten Sunday Majors, seven saw rises in attendance. The most notable player to lock down a victory was Jon "apestyles" Van Fleet, winning the Bigger $162 for more than $36,000.

$200+$156,494$1,298,800

Although there was a slight drop of 99 players, this week's Sunday Million (like last week's) saw three players earn six-figure scores. "BrazillianDog" entered the final table with the chip lead but busted in fifth place after losing a flip to Canada's "MeatPounder." The {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades} of "BrazillianDog" failed to improve against "MeatPounder's" {5-Clubs}{5-Spades} as the board came down {J-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{7-Hearts}. That paved the way for the remaining four players to work out a deal.

The last two standing were the two biggest stacks at time of the deal - "StuU_0905" and "MeatPounder." The starting heads-up chip counts were nearly even, but "StuU_0905" got the better of the heads-up duel and went on to win. On the final hand, "MeatPounder" got it in with {A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}, slightly ahead of "StuU_0905's" {K-Spades}{J-Spades}. A flop of {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{3-Clubs}, followed by the {5-Spades} turn, kept "MeatPounder" in the lead. However, the {A-Spades} fell on the river to make a tournament-clinching broadway straight for "StuU_0905."

PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up ($500K Guaranteed)

Buy-inEntrantsPrize Pool
$200+$153,519$703,800

The Sunday Warm-Up saw a solid increase of 270 entrants this week. The eventual heads-up participants, "LevotonKala" and "gtzy69", each were at different ends of the spectrum with seven players remaining. Holding {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}, "LevotonKala" lost a flip to the {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} of "bearbeer123" and was left with less than ten big blinds. On the flip side, "gtzy69" took the chip lead when "PSMozak" four-bet shoved about 20 big blinds with {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs} into the {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs} held by "gtzy69." The kings held, giving "gtzy69" a comfortable stack of roughly 46 big blinds.

Fast forward a few key pots along with crucial double-ups, the once-short-stacked "LevotonKala" entered heads-up play with about a 1.6:1 chip lead. It ended when the blinds and antes were at the 400,000/800,000/80,000 level. With {6-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}, "LevotonKala" called a three-bet with position and saw a flop of {A-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}. After "gtzy69" followed with a continuation bet, "LevotonKala" called and hit the money card on the turn. The {3-Hearts} gave "LevotonKala" trips and it wasn't long before the remainder of "gtzy69's" stack was in the middle. With {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}, "gtzy69" needed a river ace to survive, but the {10-Spades} officially ended the tournament and secured the victory for "LevotonKala."
