Global Poker Index: Peters, Negreanu Catching Volpe for Player of the Year
Each week, the Global Poker Index releases a list of the top 300 tournament poker players in the world using a formula that takes a player's results over six half-year periods. The GPI also ranks the top performers of the year over two six-month periods as calculated by the USA Today Global Poker Index point system.

2013 GPI Player of the Year
Paul Volpe held on to the No. 1 spot on the Global Poker Index Player of the Year standings this week, but Volpe's lead is far from safe heading into the second half of 2013. Mike Watson trails by only 14 points after the conclusion of the WSOP, and David Peters (pictured) is making a run at the honor after his title at the Bellagio Cup Main Event this month.

Peters jumped nine spots to No. 3 this week after winning the $10,000 Bellagio Cup IX Main Event for $355,093. It was a long time coming for the veteran grinder; Peters had many close calls in major events but had always fallen short until winning at Bellagio this month. Peters also had eight cashes at the 2013 WSOP and took sixth at the WPT World Championship in May. His biggest score of the year before Bellagio came at the Italian Poker Tour in Sanremo, where he finished second in the Main Event for $201,826.
Other big climbers in the GPI POY this week were Jason Koon, Dani Stern and Joseph Cheong. Koon took runner-up to Peters in the Bellagio Cup Main Event but secured a $316,000 payday after the two agreed to a chop. Stern also reached the final table of that event, taking fifth for $84,385.

There was some noticeable shifting taking place in the top 10 of the rankings last week following the conclusion of the World Series of Poker, and a slow week on the circuit resulted in no changes this week.
Last week, Marvin Rettenmaier and Ole Schemion jumped into the top four, replacing Joseph Cheong and Mike Watson. Rettenmaier is coming off a 99th-place finish in the World Series of Poker Main Event, where he collected a $59,708 payday. It was Mad Marvin's third cash of the series; he failed to reach a final table for the third straight year. Meanwhile, fellow German Schemion climbed five spots despite not even making the trip to Las Vegas this summer. His most recent cash came at the ISPT London Main Event in early June, but he didn't have any big scores age into lower GPI scoring periods like Cheong and Watson, both of whom dropped.

Jan Collado enters the GPI 300 after a 12th-place finish on the Alps Poker Tour's €2,000 Main Event in Veden. Justin Conley and Mikolaj Zawadzki each made deep runs in the DeepStack Extravaganza III Main Event at the Venetian in Las Vegas, with Conley finishing sixth ($55,118) and Zawadzki taking 10th ($25,019)

Results from the DeepStack Extravaganza III Main Event at the Venetian had the biggest impact on the rankings this week. O'Brien (3rd) and Little (5th) both made the final table and had sizable jumps in the GPI 300. After dropping 56 spots a few weeks ago, Phil Ivey climbed 22 positions this week despite cashing just once in the WSOP.

Tyler Reiman and John Dolan have struggled the past two years at the WSOP, resulting in a drop in their GPI totals. Yann Dion recently took 66th in the WSOP Main Event, but that was his only cash of the summer.
