Luke Schwartz Wins His Fifth SCOOP Title, James Obst Ships His Fourth

To the delight of online poker players around the world, the 2016 Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) kicked off its huge schedule on May 8 on PokerStars.

The 55 events are broken out into low, medium, and high buy-ins, creating a total of 165 different tournaments with a breath-taking $40 million in combined guaranteed prize pools.

The first 11 events are in the books with many players already scoring big. To kick things off, Sweden's Simon "C Darwin2" Mattsson proved why he is the current No. 1 ranked online poker tournament player in the world according to the PocketFives Worldwide Online Poker Rankings by shipping the SCOOP-01-H: $1,050 NL Hold'em, $750K Guaranteed for $226,106.

The Swede now owns two SCOOP titles with his previous win coming in the SCOOP-34-M: $530 FL Hold'em [6-Max, $75K Gtd] in 2012 for $38,233.

Netherlands' "etxnl01" also began the online poker festival with a bang by taking down the SCOOP-02-H: $2,100 NL Hold'em [Progressive Super-Knockout], $1M Guaranteed for $155,058 and $53,135 in bounties after beating Canada's Jonas "donut604" Mackoff in heads-up play who collected $110,695 + $5,000 in bounties for his efforts.

Brazil's Rafael "GM_VALTER" Moraes holds the honors of notching up the biggest win thus far in the poker festival after taking down the SCOOP-04-H: $2,100 NL Hold'em, $1M Guaranteed to collect $301,625. During heads-up play, Moraes chopped the tournament with fellow countrymate Kelvin "Kelvin_FP:AR" Kerber who banked an impressive 256,298.

Another big win took place on Tuesday when Australia's Michael "Imluckbox" Addamo outlasted a field of 1,279 players to win the SCOOP-05-H: $700 NL Hold'em [6-Max], $400K Guaranteed for $142,465.

United Kingdom's Luke "lb6121" Schwartz won his fifth SCOOP title in his poker career after winning the SCOOP-06-H: $2,100 NL Omaha Hi/Lo [6-Max, Progressive Super-Knockout], $100K Guaranteed for $32,151.93 + $19,578.12 in bounties as part of a heads-up deal with Russia's Vladimir "vovtroy" Troyanovskiy.

Schwartz is now tied withShaun "shaundeeb" Deeb for the second most SCOOP titles and one behind Calvin "cal42688" Anderson who set the record with six SCOOP titles early on during last year's festival.

Tommy "tcblade" Chen won his second SCOOP title after winning the SCOOP-07-H: $700+R NL Hold'em, $200K Guaranteed for $134,653. His previous win came six years ago when in 2010 in a heads-up event.

Russia's "otitov" and Slovenia's "Sinoire" both grabbed big paydays after agreeing to a heads-up deal in the SCOOP-10-H: $1,050 NL Hold'em [Super Tuesday SE], $1M Guaranteed to collect $235,304 and $214,571 respectfully.

Meanwhile, Australia's James "Andy McLEOD" Obst won his fourth SCOOP and sixth overall COOP title with a victory in the SCOOP-11-H: $1,050+R PL Omaha [6-Max], $200K Guaranteed for $155,020. With the schedule not even one-quarter finished, Obst has a chance with a couple of more wins to join the ranks of Anderson to tie for the SCOOP record. While this is certainly easier said than done, last year Jason "JasonMercier" Mercier proved this was possible by winning three SCOOP events in a week.
