Danny Myers Marches On To 888poker UKPL Liverpool Victory

The Grosvenor G Casino in Liverpool hosted its first-ever 888poker event when the online poker giant brought its UK Poker League (UKPL) tour to the city that gave the world the Beatles. The £560 buy-in UKPL Liverpool Main Event had a £100,000 guarantee on its prize pool, but the 330-strong crowd that turned out for it created an impressive £56,750 pot. Local player Danny Myers claimed the £34,230 top prize and the title of champion.
Thirty-eight places were paid in the UKPL Liverpool Main Event, and some familiar faces were among those cashers. Calogero Morrele, Robert Douras, 888poker ambassadors Nick Eastwood and Josh Manley, Michael Rosaman, Mariusz Czech, Alexander Rizvi, and Adam Wilkinson all saw a return on their investments.
When Andrew White bowed out in tenth, the nine-handed final table was set, with each of the finalists guaranteed at least £3,450 for their efforts.
888poker UKPL Liverpool Main Event Final Table Results
| Rank | Player | Prize |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Danny Myers | £34,230 |
| 2 | Cieran Tighe | £25,430 |
| 3 | Carl Butcher | £17,510 |
| 4 | Stephen Barnes | £11,590 |
| 5 | Jonathan Roberts | £8,000 |
| 6 | Paul Worsley | £5,800 |
| 7 | Anthony Whalley | £4,540 |
| 8 | Warren Aspey | £4,000 |
| 9 | Alexandros Gkampranis | £3,450 |
Alexandros Gkampranis was the first finalist to fall by the wayside. The £3,450 that Gkampranis banked was a career-best for the ninth-place finisher. Warren Aspey's second cash in an 888poker-branded event was an eighth-place finish worth £4,000.
Down to a meagre four big blinds, Anthony Whalley pinned his tournament hopes on queen-six and needed some help to beat the ace-nine of Cieran Tighe. That helped failed to arrive, and the 888poker UKPL Liverpool Main Event was down to six players.
Having won the massive GOLIATH earlier this year, Paul Worsley navigated to this event's final table. Unfortunately for Worsley and his fans, he bowed out in sixth place for £5,800.
Jonathan Roberts looked set for a timely double-up when he got his stack into the middle with ace-jack and found himself up against the dominated ace-five of diamonds in Stephen Barnes' hand. Barnes' hand remained second-best on the flop, but it turned a five, which proved enough to send Roberts to the cashier's desk to collect a career-best £8,000.
Fourth place and £11,590, the first five-figure prize of the evening, went to Barnes. He committed his 20 big blind stack with ace-ten, only to run straight into the superior ace-king of Tighe. None of the five community cards came to Barnes' rescue, and he finished in fourth for £11,590 only days after finishing fourth in the £250 Opening Voyage for £3,580.
A stroke of bad luck saw Carl Butcher go from hero to zero. First, Butcher could have won the title when he was involved in a three-way all-in with king-jack against pocket sixes and ace-king, only to lose. He then found himself flipping with ace-king against Tighe's pocket sixes. Butcher spiked an ace on the flop, only for Tighe to improve to an unlikely flush. Although painful to bust so deep into a major tournament, the £17,510 Butcher netted will go some way to numbing the pain.
Myers and Tighe fought heads-up for the title and the largest slice of the prize pool. The final hand saw Tighe all-in and at risk with ace-three, and Myers having one hand on the trophy courtesy of his dominating ace-king. The board ran out with no three in sight, which sent Tighe to the rail in second and left Myers to bask in the glory of becoming the 888poker UKPL Liverpool Main Event champion.
