Chance Kornuth called for a river card that would eliminate Daniel Negreanu on Day 4 of the CA$5,000 WSOP Super Circuit Main Event, a tournament with 2,844 entrants and CA$13,042,800 in the pot (approximately $9.46 million USD). The wish was granted.
Both poker stars went to battle in a crucial race deep in the tournament, with Negreanu fighting to stay alive in his quest to win his first WSOP Circuit ring since 2006 in Tunica, Misssissippi.
The tournament, held at Playground in Canada, Negreanu's native country, brought out some of the biggest names in the game. Michael Mizrachi and Rayan Chamas, the online crusher known as "beriuzy," were among those who advanced to Tuesday's Day 4 session. Rami Hammoud, a Canadian, also advanced just one month after reaching the WSOP Main Event final table in Las Vegas.
Negreanu Can't Win a Race
Negreanu came into the session among the smallest stacks. He had just 14 big blinds, but spun it up a bit early Tuesday morning. The GGPoker ambassador who won his eighth WSOP bracelet this summer then found a spot to double into a relatively large stack against Kornuth.
With 99 players remaining and the big blind at 25,000, Negreanu opened to 50,000 from the hijack with 10♦10♣ before Kornuth, holding A♣K♥ in the cutoff, three-bet to 140,000. The smaller-stacked Negreanu then came over the top with an all-in bet of 725,000. His opponent made the call, and off to the races they went.
The flop and turn of 5♥6♠5♠3♣ came out nice and clean for "DNegs," who was one card away from becoming a serious contender for the CAD$1,500,000 first-place prize. Kornuth, however, still had six outs to win the race on the river, and he called for the dealer to turn over the "ace of diamonds."
The dealer obliged, and that is the precise card that appeared on the river, which sent Negreanu home in 99th place for $14,500. All he could do was to high-five Kornuth for correctly calling the river card.
Coincidentally, Negreanu won a double-up to stay alive with ace-king against pocket tens on Day 3. He couldn't do it again with the hands in reverse on Day 4, however.
At the time of publishing, with 60 players remaining, Will Givens, who ran deep in the 2026 WSOP Main Event, was right at the top of the leaderboard. Kornuth was still above 100 big blinds. Day 4 livestream coverage on the WSOP YouTube channel is set to begin at 2:15 p.m. PT.
