Alex Thompson Goes Wire-to-Wire at WPT Australian Championship Final Table
Table Of Contents
Alex Thompson never lost his chip lead at the final table on his way to a WPT Australia Championship title.
The champion, who collected AUD $465,900 for beating out 527 entries in the $5,000 buy-in event, began the final table with the chip lead. And at no point during the session did he surrender that lead. But one player, Filip Radic, would even the score. But that didn't last long.
Thompson Dominates Final Table
Thompson, who had no big tournament cashes before entering the World Poker Tour event at The Star Sydney, played a big stack to perfection. He pushed his opponents around, and for the most part, it was smooth-sailing for him at the final table.
It took more than two hours before any of the final six players busted on the livestream. Ryan Henry, who began play with the smallest stack, finally put all his chips in the middle with Q♦4♥, but lost to Radic's K♥10♥ and was out in sixth place for $89,000.
Final Table Results
| Place | Player | Prize |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Alex Thompson | $465,900 |
| 2 | Filip Radic | $290,000 |
| 3 | Pranav Bhatt | $214,000 |
| 4 | Jack Sweet | $159,000 |
| 5 | Tingjia Huang | $119,000 |
| 6 | Ryan Henry | $89,000 |
Tingjia Huang (fifth place for $119,000) and Jack Sweet (fourth place for $159,000) were the next eliminations, although the fourth-place finish was a bit disappointing to Sweet given that he'd doubled to one of the big stacks when he won a race. Pranav Bhatt was the smallest stack with three players left and couldn't spin it up, so he went home in third place for $214,000.
Thompson held a 6:1 chip lead when heads-up play began, and the match lasted no time. On the final hand of the five-minute match, Thompson, who had Jx10x, put Radic all in. Radic called with 6x5x and couldn't pair up, which meant he would have to settle for the $290,000 runner-up prize.
Thompson, on the other hand, is now a World Poker Tour champion and $465,900 richer.
