Baena Tops Day 1a in Barcelona; Razavi and Abernathy Advance With Bigger Stacks

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Alex Baena I Carrasco
Alex Baena I Carrasco

The 2022 888poker LIVE Barcelona €1,100 Main Event created a field of 94 entries on the first of four starting days. Once ten levels at Casino Barcelona had wrapped up in the early morning hours, only 39 players bagged their chips for the night. Among them were several 888poker ambassadors but it was a local Catalan player who eventually topped the leaderboard.

Alex Baena I Carrasco made the most of a late rush in which he dominated with a big stack and bagged up 213,300. He is followed by WSOP bracelet winner Melika Razavi, who was one of several participants to take advantage of the re-entry option. The decision to jump back in led to two quick double ups and she eventually secured a very healthy stack of 176,500, putting her in second place on the leaderboard.

Big stacks also belong to Gerard Rubiralta (150,600), Max Avela (128,500), Danny Pyke (120,200), and Tobias Revenas (112,000), all of which can be found in the overnight top ten. The same feat was achieved by 888poker ambassador Samantha Abernathy (106,800), and 2022 888poker LIVE London champion Bhavin Khatri (95,400).

Other notables through after the first starting day include Harcharan Dogra Dogra, €2,200 High Roller winner James Crawley-Boevey, Ian Simpson, Sergio Alonso Camunas, Mitchell Hynam, Kami Hudson, Alin Grasu, and Tomasz Brzezinski.

Abernathy wasn't the only 888poker ambassador to advance on Day 1a, as Alexandre Mantovani (62,100), Stream Team Member Rene Majed (33,200), and Vivian Saliba (23,700) will certainly be back for Day 2 on Sunday, May 22, 2022. Not as fortunate were Joshua Manley and Jordan Banfield as both 888poker sponsored streamers were among the casualties throughout the ten 45-minute levels.

Maria Ho bubbled the €5,300 Super High Roller and her spell in the €1,100 Main Event was short-lived as well. After losing a coin flip to Abernathy, she lost the remaining chips shortly after but promised to be back for the following starting day. The most expensive tournament of the schedule at Casino Barcelona brought nine entries and Dan "Jungleman" Cates earned the top prize of €33,000 after defeating Ivan Stokes (€10,200) in heads-up.

Online streamer Majed tussled with the 888poker ambassadors Mantovani and Saliba throughout the first half of the day and his stack went on a roller coaster ride. Eventually, the German was knocked out and he opted to re-enter late while racking up just a small profit thereafter. Abernathy followed the same path after she joined mid-way through the day but after winning the aforementioned flip against Ho, she scored another double with aces versus kings.

All those that didn't make it through just yet have another three starting days from May 20 to 22 with the final flight boasting a reduced level duration of 20 minutes ahead of the restart for Day 2. The late registration will remain open for another two levels on May 22 for all those seeking to enter the fray.

Day 1b will get underway at 6pm local time on May 20. Stay tuned for more live poker action from Barcelona, as the PokerNews team will provide updates throughout the entire €1,100 Main Event.

Avigal and Majed Eliminated

Level 9 : 400/800, 800 ante
Meir Avigal
Meir Avigal

With 5,600 preflop and 3,500 on the {a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{7-Clubs} flop invested between Meir Avigal and Danny Pyke, the former then got the rest of it in after the {4-Clubs} turn only to get instantly looked up by Pyke.

Meir Avigal: {k-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Danny Pyke: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}

Only four outs were at the disposal of Avigal and he missed them on the {2-Hearts} river.

At the same time one table over, Rene Majed lost the last few chips with {a-Hearts}{5-Hearts} against the {j-Spades}{j-Hearts} of Francisco Pulido Castillo in a preflop contest. The {k-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{q-Hearts} board delivered no help to the German.

Another Double for Abernathy

Level 9 : 400/800, 800 ante
Samantha Abernathy
Samantha Abernathy

The cards were on their backs in a preflop contest and it was Sam Abernathy all-in and at risk once more, albeit this time for the last 39,000. She was looked up by Harcharan Dogra Dogra, who had the far superior stack but slightly inferior pocket pair.

Sam Abernathy: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}
Harcharan Dogra Dogra: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

The {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} flop gave Abernathy the top set but she had to endure a sweat after the {10-Clubs} turn. Nothing changed anymore on the {7-Diamonds} river and Abernathy scored another double-up.

Ciurea Eliminated by Edri

Level 9 : 400/800, 800 ante
Catalin Ciurea
Catalin Ciurea

Former big stack Catalin Ciurea raised to 2,000 and Yehonatan Behor then made it 6,600 to go from one seat over. Adam Edri, who had re-entered not that long ago, four-bet to 17,000. Ciurea then moved all-in to force out Behor and Edri snap-called.

Catalin Ciurea: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Adam Edri: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}

The {a-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{4-Spades}{6-Hearts} board left Ciurea drawing dead on the turn and Edri won the pot with aces full.

Abernathy Eliminated in Three-Way All-In

Level 6 : 200/500, 500 ante
Sam Abernathy
Sam Abernathy

The board was already mucked according to the Spanish live reporters from Poker Red and Sam Abernathy was spotted on her way out. Her last 6,200 had gone in preflop with the {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} and Joan Capel Gallardo got involved with the {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}. However, it was the {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts} of Max Avela that won it all with no paint cards making an appearance.

The empty seat of Abernathy was filled by Gabriel Podovei, who sported more than the starting stack all of a sudden only minutes after he was very short.

Majed Has the Best Of It Against Mantovani Again

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Vivian Saliba, Bhavin Khatri and Rene Majed
Vivian Saliba, Bhavin Khatri and Rene Majed

The clashes of the two 888poker ambassadors continue without much of a break and Alexandre Mantovani had to part ways with a decent chunk of his stack. It was the Brazilian who bet the {5-Hearts}{3-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{4-Spades} river for 2,500 out of the blinds and he then paid off a raise to 8,500 by Rene Majed. The German turned over {j-Spades}{j-Clubs} for jacks and treys, to which Mantovani nodded and tapped the table.

Rodolfo Hernandez Hernandez bet the {a-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{8-Clubs} turn for 4,000 into a pot of around 9,000 and then reluctantly called the all-in by the High Roller champion James Crawley-Boevey for the last 8,900.

James Crawley-Boevey: {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}

Crawley Boevey only needed to dodge spades but failed to do so when the {6-Spades} river completed the board.

Renaga Nunez Eliminated by Avela

Max Avela

It remains unclear when the chips went in but Ferran Renaga Nunez headed out of the tournament area with his {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} still exposed. Max Avela was raking in the pot as his {6-Spades}{3-Spades} had flopped bottom pair and turned trips treys on a board of {10-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{8-Spades} to reduce the field by one.

Majed Joins; Loses a Bunch Right Away

Level 1 : 100/100, 0 ante
Alexandre Mantovani
Alexandre Mantovani

888poker Stream Team member Rene Majed completed the line-up of ambassadors on the same table and immediately clashed with Alexandre Mantovani. A potentially even bigger pot was avoided when both checked the {k-Spades}{9-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} river. Majed tabled the {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for the flopped top pair and flush draw but Mantovani raked in a pot of more than 14,000 with {a-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for a pair of aces and busted nut flush draw.

Majed got some of the chips back when he raised it up from under the gun and fired one bet on the {9-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} flop. Simon Paparone called and then check-called another 2,100 on the {3-Clubs} turn and both checked the {k-Hearts} on the river. Paparone turned over {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades} but Majed held the superior pair in {7-Spades}{7-Hearts}.

British Victory in the €2,200 High Roller

James Crawley-Boevey
James Crawley-Boevey

Today's schedule also featured the conclusion of the €2,200 High Roller, which had attracted a field of 63 entries. Only the top eight finishers earned a portion of the €120,960 prize pool with a min cash of €5,000 reserved for Jordi Escriba Munio. Among those to cash thereafter were Max Avela and Simone Agnolotto, followed by Adria Colomina Guitart.

There was a deal between the final three players in which Markus Hausberger was the first to bow out, leaving the Brits James Crawley-Boevey and Warren Aspey to battle for the victory. The duo battled back and forth and Aspey doubled back into the lead only for Crawley-Boevey to pull ahead again. Ultimately, both flopped a pair of eights but the ace-eight of Crawley-Boevey prevailed against the king-eight of Aspey to win the trophy and top prize of €31,500.

At 5pm, the €5,300 Super High Roller kicked off and among those in contention was also Vivian Saliba. The 888poker ambassador was one of two players to win the seat in a live satellite at Casino Barcelona. Another satellite took place in the main tournament room earlier as well and is still ongoing, which happens to be a €110 qualifier for the €1,100 Main Event. There were 61 entries in total which leaves five seats and
